All that time Isamu had been in her room she had not spoken a word and rather looked like she feared him or was lightly troubled by his presence. But why had she changed so suddenly? All that time she had looked after him, protected him from thst waitress, insisted on breaking the ice, calling him friend and sharing all these experiences with him. Did all that not mean anything to her in the end? Was she just being nice ro him because he was her seishi? Was that it? He placed his hand on his chest, where his heart laid and closed the hand clutching at his vest. He felt great pain and cursed silently for this was what he had been protecting himself from all these years. He no longer wanted to feel this grief, the treason that had once pierced his heart and he turned to the side on the bed he laid on.
He still clenched his vest and with his other hand he beat up his pillow punching at it a couple of times before the most painful memories in his life came back to him and rage and sorrow plagued his heart. He gasped as he felt a few tears leave his eyes and he muttered, "Isamu you fool..." He could not expect to possess the love of someone like Hotori, what was he thinking? Haru probably tried to imply this when he had spoken to Isamu although he had guaranteed she loved him...a young and spirited woman had nothing to do with someone as cold as Isamu.
He cried on silently feeling the pain of twenty eight years which he had hidden from the eyes of the world. No one knew the pain this bodyguard hid beneath his deep and cold amber eyes, nor would there ever be anyone to know this and comfort him. He was a lone man from childhood and he seemed destined to remain as such. Music was his only comfort for it reminded him of his early years in happiness and in the company of his diceased parents. After crying for what felt like a long time, Isamu finally felt asleep.
As usual-although this time Isamu slept a bit more due to his recovery-the Ice Knight got up earlier than anyone else and packed everything and exited his room without taking one last glance. He reached the stables and was pleased to find everything ready for their trip. He sighed when realising that they had been given few horses, he would probably have to take Hotori with him on his horse, he winced as he remembered the incidents of the night before. If she did not wish to ride with him he would not mind walking and guiding the horse, he had to do that a couple of times in the past.
He requested a light breakfast to be ready for them as soon as possible. He then paid for everything and decided to wait for everyone at the dining room siting by the chimney. He sighed and his eyes focused on the flames, this had got to stop... it only distracted him from his duty and though he could never stop lovig his miko, he could not stop looking after her to shield his heart. It would not be love then if he put his own comfort before her own. He sighed and took out his shamisen and began to play a beautiful melody as if to welcome the others to wake up.
He closed his eyes and allowed the beauty of the music soothe his unjured soul. He sighed happily and the fire made the amber stone around his neck shine the brighter just as his eyes shone when strong emotions overcame him. The melody transmitted things he could not break his pride to expess.
But then, his comfort was destroyed when someone walked behind him and caressed his long dark hair and slid an arm around him. At first Isamu wanted it to be Hotori, but as he turned and stood up he frowned, of course it would not be Hotori! Get over it Isamu... he mentally told himself. His coldness was back and he simply looked down at Kiki who seemed enticed by his charms and how handsome he looked when he played music. In a way, healthy he looked much more apealing to her and she smiled and approached him to stand but mere inches from him and placing a hand on his chest she said softly, "She is just a child, handsome, but if only you looked around you would see a wonan who loves you and would gladly consent in making you feel loved..."
Her voice was seductive and she moved closer to him running her arms around his neck, "Let me love you.." She smiled and began to lean forth to kiss his lips once more and for a slight moment Isamu felt tempted to accept. On the one hand he knew he loved Hotori and yet the past incidents made it clear to him he had to distance himself from her so this would probably establish a wall between them. Yet... he would be detroying his feelings and he could not lie, he could not love this woman. For as long as he lived he would love Hotori and though probably he wished her to feel his pain and have someone understand him finally, after all these years, it would hurt her if she saw Isamu with Kiki and even more so if she caught them in such an intimate moment.
No, he would be no better than his Nemesis if he hurt the woman that he loved. He would not... As Kiki's lips almost touched his he held his breath and with one swift movement he removed her arms from around his neck and took several steps backward.
She looked annoyed, angry even... and hurt. She eyed him darkly, "I'll warn you Isamu-san, I always get what I want and though you are foolish enough to love someone ten years younger than you and who has not even matured in body and mind... I WILL make you mine...you and your blue-haired friend..." She ran a finger on his lips before he grabbed her by the wrist and moved away even further.
"If you dare harm anyone in my party, although, I would rather not harm anyone... for their safety I will kill you." Isamu spoke coldly and calmly and turned his back on her as she tried to embrace him once more, it made her sneer in anger but her hand moved to caress his hair once more. He rolled his eyes and added, "I am dead serious... now leave..." Her hand dropped his hair and she growled and left him to mind his own thoughts while some maids brought the food. He requested a maid to wake everyone up and he sat silently at a table where the food already awaited them.
He then took out a piece of special cloth and began to clean and shine his instrument and then he tuned it while he waited. Yet his bodyguard senses were activated after that woman's second attempt to woe him. And something did not feel quite right. He saw the maid that had been requested to wake the others whisper somerhing to the waitress. He frowned and sighed putting everything away. He got up and followed the maid who had a dagger in her hand. So Kiki was the typical and pathetic person who would make others do her dirty job for her?
He waited for Kiki to return to the kitchen and he went upstairs. He noticed the maid had gone straight into Hotori's room and was already lifting a dagger and getting ready to strike down the sleeping Hotori. She looked so at peace it pierced his heart that this could all have been his fault. He moved as quick as a lynx and as silently as a mouse. Before the maid could react, she had a sword blade to her throat and Isamu's eyes shone darkly like magma. He forced her to move slightly away and muttered coldly, "I will not kill you because I saw who sent you... but do not dare attack her again or...there won't be a second time...am I clear?"
She shivered lightly but nodded. She dropped the dagger which he caught and then he watched her for a moment, "Now go and tell the others to wake up and have breakfast, I can take it from here." She nodded and left to do as he requested and it was then that he had a moment to examine the dagger and something in its carvings stirred his heart and made him gasp and drop it... It was the same icon of...
His trail of thought stopped when he saw how beautiful Hotori looked when she slept, oh Suzaku you are cruel indeed! He saw how she embraced the bear and the resolution to distance himself from her seemed to dissolve like mud when it rained. He knelt on one knee and caressed her cheek and moved her beautiful and soft hair from her face as he said softly, "Hotori, all is safe now, wake up and come to have breakfast with us." He kissed the back of the hand he held but he stopped himself from touching her any further remembering the nigjt before... She would probably hate knowing that... he had woken her up. Maybe she would prefer it if Haru or Sei did this?
His eyes looked warmly at her and they shone just like the necklace she had given him. Surely she had to feel deeply for him having bought something to give him, he was never aware of her getting things of the sort for her other seishi... oh how he wanted to believe this to be true...

Hotori had slept roughly for most of the night. At first her dreams had been filled with the same heartache she'd felt upon falling asleep. Eventually, however, she began to recall happier times with Isamu...all of the gentle touches and the small smiles. A little part of her dreaded waking, as she was just sure the man she loved would hate her for how she'd acted the night before. She thought she heard his voice, far away, and it did sound angry...and yet, she couldn't help but reach out for him, slowly drifting into the world of the waking as she heard his words, and felt the gentle touches.
"Hotori, all is safe now, wake up and come to have breakfast with us."
Her eyes fluttered open and instantly she smiled up at him. It was a reflex, and not a conscious thought. Seeing him, especially so close, brightened her life and made her feel better than a full night's sleep. "Good morning, Isamu." She reached up and gently touched his cheek in greeting, although she had to move her hand quickly to cover her mouth as she yawned. He didn't look angry with her, but she felt she needed to say something...to address what had happened. She sat up in bed, and gently rubbed the sleep from her eyes. She then reached out and captured his hand, silently willing him to stay long enough to hear her out.
"Isamu...last night, I acted like...well, Haru-kun would say I acted like a brat." She shook her head. "Anyway, I just wanted to say I'm sorry." Her emerald eyes sought out his amber gaze and she hoped he could tell she meant what she was saying. "If I said...or did...anything that hurt your feelings...that really wasn't my intention." She bit her lower lip gently. "Maybe I was still a little shaken...or maybe I just needed sleep...or something, I don't know." She needed him, but as she couldn't say that, she pressed on with her apology. "My point is, you didn't do anything...improper...and I shouldn't have acted as though you had. You've always been a perfect gentleman to me."
She hoped he would understand her words, and that she hadn't somehow made it worse. She held his hand still, gently folding it between both of her own, though she would let him pull away if he simply could not forgive her. That thought made her want to cry once more, but she had done all of her crying the night before, and didn't think she could cry again...not in front of him, anyway. She already felt childish and weak enough without crying...again. All she could do now was wait, and pray he wouldn't be angry with her. The thought occurred to her that she should tell him her true feelings, but she pushed that thought aside quickly. If she told him now, it would sound as if she was only saying it to talk him into forgiving her. She loved him too much to make him think she would use the word so lightly.
Haru awoke the moment the maid entered his and Sei's room, his ice blue eyes taking in her expression as she approached, not yet realizing he was awake. She looked shaken, scared even, and perhaps a little ashamed. He saw he was awake, and gently passed along the message that Isamu had sent her to wake them for breakfast. He nodded and indicated she could leave before waking Sei himself. The pair then dressed for the day and packed their few remaining things to leave, heading down to the dining room to wait on the others. He had expected to find Isamu there, but he wasn't...neither was Hotori. Perhaps their leader had gone to wake their Miko himself. He grinned to himself at the thought. Hopefully his little trick last night had helped those two along some.

The moment Hotori stirred he regretted waking her up since she looked so at peace and he could only think on how wonderful it had to be to wake up ever morning with her in his arms and her beautiful smile shining on her lips. He watched her wake up and he had to stop himself from kissing her soft lips and holding her against him. He came to realise it was becoming harder and harder to bear this repression he forced upon himself. He just did not want Hotori to suffer not did he wish her to be unhappy but he realised that he could no longer keep his distance since both of them had gone through so much together it would pain the both of them and it would be unfair. He smiled softly as their eyes met.
"Good morning, Isamu."
He lightly closed his eyes feeling her touch his cheek and he took a deep breath. Her smile made her look the more beautiful and the way her eyes shone almost made him think that she was this happy and charming because he was here, with her. Could it truly be his presence alone made her so happy? He looked into her eyes not wanting to look away and realised that she had that very same effect on him. He felt lighter and for some reason he knew that life could be wonderful with Hotori by his side but all these were mere dreams he would never achieve. He watched her yawn and stretch and even doing things as basic as those seemed to make her look cute.
"Isamu...last night, I acted like...well, Haru-kun would say I acted like a brat... Anyway, I just wanted to say I'm sorry... If I said...or did...anything that hurt your feelings...that really wasn't my intention... Maybe I was still a little shaken...or maybe I just needed sleep...or something, I don't know... My point is, you didn't do anything...improper...and I shouldn't have acted as though you had. You've always been a perfect gentleman to me."
He was a bit amazed at her words and he wondered if she had been thinking about this all night long. He watched her bite her lower lip and ge had to take a deep breath to stop himself from moving closer to her. His gazed locked with hers and he whispered, "Hotori..." She took his hand and held it between both ofnher hands andbhe watched that silently for a moment. He sighed, he could not lie since she would know as she was the miko. He plaxed his orher hand on her cheek gently and it remained there as he started explaining, "I was very confused and did not know what to do. I did not want you ro fear me like you feared him that night I found you at the dungeons... But, if this is truly what happened then I am relieved. I cannot orotect you if you fear or dislike my presebce. I know most feel uncomfortable around me but... I want you to trust me and feel happy when in my company." He allowed her to keep hold of his other hand.
He looked at her and said, "I guess you should get up and change or your breakfast will fet cold. However, I can leave if you want me to." He felt rarher silly saying that but he did not wish for a repeat of last night. Yet, for some reason, he did not want to leave her side. He also got an idea, looking at the brush on the favle he decided to pick it up and he walked toward Hotori and gently remoced the ribbons in her hair and then with a gentleness no one would expect of a warrior, he began to comb her beautiful hair and he smiled enjoying said experience. But then he did something quite unexpected... he tied her hair in a ponytail similar to his and then tied the ribbon the very same way he usually did his.
He then smiled at her and kissed her hand. He then smiled at her and said, "Fair Hotori, I will go ensure the horses are ready and will come to meet you at the breakfast table. He smiled briefly at her and then quickly went to do as promised.

"I was very confused and did not know what to do. I did not want you ro fear me like you feared him that night I found you at the dungeons... But, if this is truly what happened then I am relieved. I cannot orotect you if you fear or dislike my presence. I know most feel uncomfortable around me but... I want you to trust me and feel happy when in my company."
Hotori took his words seriously, but she couldn't help the lighthearted laugh that bubbled up. "Don't be silly, Isamu. I could never fear you, and I will always trust you and enjoy your company." If he had these fears, perhaps her love for him was not as clear as Haru and the others acted like it was. She felt so in love that she feared she might explode, and yet she always seemed to botch these beautiful, quiet moments because of her own insecurities. Still, knowing that didn't make it any easier to ignore those insecurities. She loved him with all of her heart, but she couldn't tell him...not yet at least.
"I guess you should get up and change or your breakfast will fet cold. However, I can leave if you want me to."
She had just opened her mouth to tell him he could stay when he moved. At first she thought he was leaving, without waiting for her answer. Perhaps he was mad with her after all. Instead, however, he went to the table and picked up her brush. He returned and took down her hair, brushing it out for her. Her eyes drifted closed, and she couldn't help but smile. Had it felt this wonderful for Isamu when she had brushed his hair? It was wonderful to feel his hands moving through her hair. And yet, it was over too soon. She expected him to leave it down, as she most often wore it, but instead he began to tie it up with the ribbon from her braid. Her eyes opened once more as she realized her hair was tied back the same way his usually was. It made her feel, as silly as it sounded, as though that was now one more small thing to tie them together. "Thank you..." she said softly, turning to face him once more, and smiling as brightly as she could, without even realizing it. He kissed her hand, and it warmed her heart to see him smiling too.
"Fair Hotori, I will go ensure the horses are ready and will come to meet you at the breakfast table."
"I will be waiting." She promised, watching as he left. No sooner had her door closed than she flung herself from the bed and rushed to get dressed and make sure all her things were ready to go. Her new purchases were packed away, as was her beloved bear, since she didn't want anything to happen to it on the trip. She dressed in the dress she had bought before all of this had started, but left her hair as Isamu had fixed it. She cast one last look around the room, but saw nothing more she needed to bring, and could think of nothing more to get ready. With a deep breath, she shouldered her pack and headed down to meet the others for breakfast.
She had not seen her bow and arrows since arriving at the inn, but she was sure Haru and Sei were keeping up with them for her. She had yet to discover what Isamu thought of her weapon of choice, not that she'd ever used it in a battle. As she walked, she took just a moment to imagine shooting that annoying barmaid right in the behind, and giggled to herself. She was glad they would soon be leaving the inn, and Isamu would be beyond her reach.
She was nearly to the dining room when she spotted the red haired devil herself. She seemed to be talking to one of the maids, and looked like she was plotting something. Hotori knew it was wrong to listen in on others' conversations, but she couldn't help it. It seemed she hadn't been noticed, so she stepped into a side room to see what they were talking about.
As she hid there listening, Hotori was shocked at what she'd heard. Apparently that morning, the barmaid, apparently her name was Kiki, had tried to come on to Isamu once more, and when he refused, had sent the maid to harm Hotori. Hotori could overlook the attempt on her own life, as it had failed and the maid was obviously too frightened to try again. She could not, however, overlook that woman daring to try and seduce Isamu once more. Hotori had made herself quite clear on that matter their first night there, and it seems this woman did not take her seriously. Hotori loved Isamu far too much to think of that horrible woman touching him in any way. She gave a soft growl of frustration and dropped her pack on the floor as she strode forward, ready for confrontation.
Hotori didn't notice Haru step out of the dining room, looking for her. She was so focused in on her red haired enemy that she wouldn't have even noticed Isamu, had he approacked. Fury blazed in her eyes as she stormed up, and she caught Kiki's eye before she drew back and slapped her as hard as she cold across the face. "I told you to keep your filthy hands off of my man." Her tone was clear, but full of fury, and the maid gave a startled squeak before running off. Hotori ignored her. "I will only tell you this once more. Isamu is not for the likes of you. None of the men in my group have any use for someone like you, and if I ever catch you anywhere near them...near Isamu...outside of the confines of your job, I will make you regret it."
Hotori was never the type to act in such a manner, but this woman had crossed the line more than once, and Hotori was sick and tired of dealing with her. She would feel bad about the things she had said and done later, but for now, she felt both her words and actions justified. She stood her ground, fully ready to go to blows with this woman if the need arose. Part of her thought Isamu might be disappointed to see her acting that way, and maybe it was just pure jealousy on Hotori's part, but she didn't have the patience to deal with this woman any longer. She recalled the dagger from their first night, and so she kept her eyes peeled for any slight of hand that might mean weapons. She wouldn't expect this woman to fight fairly.

"Don't be silly, Isamu. I could never fear you, and I will always trust you and enjoy your company."
He kept walking down the steps to the memories of her sweet laughter and the echo of her words in his mind. He smiled for a moment before he concentrated on the task at hand, to be honest, he was as eager to leave this Inn as Hotori was. He couldn't truly complain about the service, food or accomodation. However, one of their members of staff, Kiki, had been making their stay from the very beginning a tedious one. And in many ways she was harassing Isamu and Hotori in different ways. This Ice Knight never forgot or forgave any offence against Hotori and so this lady was very close to getting a kick on her backside, woman or not...
Isamu felt so at ease when Hotori reassured him she enjoyed his company and trusted him fully. The night before had been quite a shock to him and he had not known how to react or what to do. He took a deep breath and sighed watching the stairs as he descended and then took another set of stairs to the stables. He liked to bond as much as possible with the horse that would be given to him. That way the trip would be much easier and safer, he always thought of animals as friends. He smiled when his horse lifted its head as if to greet him.
The warrior smiled and whsipeed something to the horse and gave him an apple and as the horse delighted in such juicy and crunchy fruit, he playfully nudged Isamu who chuckled and caressed behind its ears and snout. He did that for a long moment. He felt like a young boy once more; he had always enjoyed helping his parents looking after their horses or any animals that he would find in the wilderness that could need his help and care. He embraced his new friend on the neck and took a deep breath to regain composure.
"Thank you... I'll be waiting. .."
His eyes closed as he recalled that last experience. Hotori had seemingly enjoyed his touch and did not seem to mind how he had tied her hair. It had felt so natural to opt for that hairdo and he had to admit he had been wondering how she would look with her hair tied up like that. He truly liked how beautiful she looked and hoped she did not mind. But then... what would the others think? Oh, you know what... he did not care. She looked lovely and that was all he cared about.
He imagined she would not take long to fet ready and join him at the breakfast table and so he finally checked all ropes and packages were secure and well fastened and them he began to make his way to the table. A maid had taken one last glance in the rooms to ensure nothing was left and informed Isamu that they could leave after gaving breakfast and ge nodded.
The moment ge arrived to the dining room he did not see Hotori, everyone else was there with the exception of his beloved. He raised an eyebrow and decided to go back into the rooms in case she was not ready to leave her room when he suddenly ocerheard voices near the kitchen. It felt like two people arguing and for some reason his seishi nature urged him forth until he recognized bkth voices. One was Hotori and the orher... Kiki.
He should have known that woman wouldn't let them leave in peace. He sighed abd walked forth with more determination than ever before. He would not let aby harm come to Hotori. At the beginning he had decided not to care what the topic of discussion was until...
"I told you to keep your filthy hands off of my man... I will only tell you this once more. Isamu is not for the likes of you. None of the men in my group have any use for someone like you, and if I ever catch you anywhere near them...near Isamu...outside of the confines of your job, I will make you regret it."
He stood frozen on his tracks. What had Hotori just said? Had she truly just called him that? Her... man? He felt his cheeks reden to such extent he felt his face would explode and he looked away in an attempt to hide his embarassment. This was not the first time that happened, back then Hotori had reacted with the same anger and jealousy and he had learned then what was confirmed now... she loved him. On the one hand, he felt happy and at peace and wanted to tell the whole world that Hotori, the most beautiful and wonderful woman he gad ever met, loved him and no one else. She had singled him out from anyone else.
He found himself smiling and placing a hand on his chest as if trying to contain the excitement and the fast heartbeat that could probably be heard nearby. He felt a presence but decided it was another seishi, probably all of them had sensed Hotori's anger and came to check it out.
This brought him back to reality and he ran a hand through his face before he took a deep breath and walked decidedly toward the room where he came in time to watch Hotori slap Kiki in such a way that he deemed she would get a bruised cheek to say the least. His miko was truly protectice of him, it became obvious that she...well...she loved him.
His thoughts were interrupted when Kiki picked up a wooden stick normally used for baking and lifted it to strike Hotori. No sooner had she done that, Isamu was already standing between them shielding his miko and directing a dangerous and dark glance in Kiki's direction. His amber eyes lit with fire and they burned like that time he had shoved her out of his room.
Kiki dropped the wooden stick almost automatically annd shivered lightly. It was then he said darkly, "Let's go, my lady." He did not want that wench to learn Hotori's name for some reason. He gently took one step back still giving the waitress a deadly glance before turning his back toward her and taking Hotori's hand in his and kissing it softly before guiding her to the table so they could eat before the time came to leave. He only just stopped to make a point and said coldly, "by the way... I believe this is yours..." With one swift movement he tossed the dagger used to harm Hotori behind his shoulder making it land inches away from her face and she gasped silently and took a few steps back.
What none of them knew was thar Kiki would not let them leave that easily... He ate silently until he felt satisfied and then, the Innkeeper approached him and said that, in order to thank them for their visit he would give them a shot of a digestice ale, one each, also to wish them a safe journey as was customary. He nodded and watched all of the shots and people drank them. He drank his and nodded to the Innkeeper's health for the man waited there for all of them to drink their shots.
But then, Isamu's senses came alive and then he looked at Hotori's glass and noticed the liquid was of a different colour to the others and it even had a strange scent. Looking at the Innkeeper he knew this man was innocent... Kiki was truly dangerous. But, this poison was not too strong and since he had been recently battling a deadly poison his body would take this poison more easily. It would be gone wihin hours.
He quickly snatched Hotori's glass and spoke to the Innkeeper as if to justify his words, "The Lady does not drink much, however, in her stead I will enjoy this drink you kindly offered us and may your business bloom." He then looked at the poisoned ale and drank it quickly. He hoped Hotori would not argue or be upset or that would make the owner suspicious. He turned to Haru and the others. "Everything is ready for the journey whenever you are ready."

Hotori was quickly running through what her self defense class had said about dealing with an armed attacker when, quite suddenly, Isamu was there between them. With just a look from him, Kiki dropped her stick and backed off. He then whisked Hotori away before either woman could utter antoher word. Hotori didn't so much as take another glance back, feeling as though she had won the battle in the only way that mattered. They would be leaving the inn shortly, and there would be nothing more that horrible woman could do to them them. Hotori was a little surprised when Isamu threw the dagger at Kiki, realizing that must have been the one she'd told the maid to use on Hotori, but she didn't show it. Instead, she paused just long enough to pick up her pack once more before finally entering the dining room with Isamu and sitting down to eat with the others.
Haru had slipped out to see what was taking his Miko so long, and had seen most of the exchange between the two women, though he returned to the dining room once Isamu was on the scene to do damage control. He nodded his thanks to the innkeeper, and downed his shot with the rest of them, smiling at the good will he could feel all around them.
Hotori had been far too absorbed in her thoughts to really pay much attention to the meal she ate, let alone the shot placed before her. How long had Isamu been standing there? How much of what she had said to Kiki had he heard? Did he think she was less of a lady for saying such things? She supposed she did feel a little snobby, the way she had phrased what she said, but she had spoken from her heart, and it had nothing to do with Kiki's being a waitress, and everything to do with her simply being a horrible person. Hotori didn't think it was just jealousy that made her feel that way, either. She reminded her, in a lot of ways, of the man who had kidnapped her, and Hotori didn't want anyone like that near someone she loved. Her gaze had just landed on the shot before her when Isamu's hand snatched it up.
"The Lady does not drink much, however, in her stead I will enjoy this drink you kindly offered us and may your business bloom."
Hotori was not much of a drinker, though she had shared a drink or two with the others during her time here, but it was never more than a few sips. Had Isamu known that, somehow? He seemed so in-tuned with her in so many ways that it wouldn't surprise her in the least if he had somehow figured out she didn't drink much. She nodded in agreement to both his explanation and his well wishes, and finished her breakfast, sipping at the last of her tea instead.
"Everything is ready for the journey whenever you are ready."
"We're ready." Haru assured. He was curious about Isamu's actions, but knew that now was not the time to question them. He looked around and saw that everyone was finished eating, so he stood, taking his and Sei's packs and tossing them over one shoulder. "I assume our little lady will be riding with you?" He asked Isamu, giving him a sideways grin. If Hotori wanted help, Haru planned to do all in his power to help her, even if it was something as small as this.
Hotori resisted the urge to make a face at Haru and point out that she did know how to ride a horse by herself. No, she'd much rather ride with Isamu, if he would let her. She stood as well and picked up her own pack, ready to go. She gave a slight bow to the innkeeper, and thanked him. It might seem silly for a 'lady' to do, but she wanted to let the man know she had-mostly, at least-enjoyed her time at his inn. She then followed the rest of the group to the stables to head out. She wasn't sure which horse she was supposed to ride on, so she waited for some sort of indication from Isamu.
Haru, however, seemed to knwo which horse was his and Sei's, and so he added their packs and climbed on, helping his love up behind him. He caught Hotori's gaze while Isamu was occupied, and silently mouthed the words 'Your man, huh?' Hotori stuck her tongue out at him, and turned her back to him, hoping he hadn't seen that she was now blushing. It was just her luck that Haru would have overheard her.

Isamu was grateful for her silence and cooperation when Hotori confronted Kiki and he eyed her as she followed behind him until they reached the dining table. He did not want to have problems at the Inn, at least not more than necessary. That would stop them from using this Inn should they need to in one of their many travels. To be honest, he did not miss his life at the castle, as a bodyguard he was free to travel around as he pleased, it gave him a newly defined sensation of freedom and he valued it a lot. He placed a hand on his sword belt as they entered the room and he allowed Hotori to be the first to sit at the table. He did not want her to feel more uncomfortable than she already did, in a way he was proud of her for standing up to what she believed, for showing her true strength and temperament, but right now was no time to let it all out and enrage someone who had proven to be dangerous. If she could blackmail a maid to do her biding and harm another human being, then they best be weary of her. In fact, judging by what that woman told him earlier that morning, she had also tried to seduce Haru, something he found amusing. But he best warn him too, Sei might get hurt because of her. He sighed and ran a hand through his fringe and then busied himself eating and watching Hotori. She looked truly lost in thought. Could it be he had done or said something that had offended her? Surely she could not expect him to let her confront that monster… Kiki was no one to take lightly, she was capable of absolutely anything. And it was her words that assured him they best be as far away from her as possible. Yet, would that stop her? He had his doubts on the matter.
He watched everyone, and something in Haru’s eyes told him he probably had seen Hotori slap that woman. But he made no comments on the matter, probably guessing Hotori was with no spirits to be teased at this moment. for some reason Isamu had gotten used to the constant teasing and found it amusing at times. Haru truly behaved like an elder brother of Hotori and he was glad she had connected so nicely with her seishi, it was important to ensure her protection. He had heard of Priestesses that had not connected at all wit her seishi and the whole relationship was tortuous and treacherous and even the ending was… well, dramatic to say the least. Everyone ate silently and he decided that once the meal was done they would leave to stop Kiki from getting more ideas to harm them any further. He sighed relieved that al those times he had been there for protect Hotori but… his eyes moved to look down at her as she ate, what made him be there at the right time and the right place? What power did he possess that warned him of whenever Hotori was in trouble even when she did not know this herself? How could he possess this sixth sense that enabled him to be her guardian? He became aware that he had probably been looking at her or far too long and he looked at this goblet with water and busied himself drinking from it until there were no drops left.
So far no one questioned his motives to drink Hotori’s shot. He had examined the colour when he picked it up and lifted it as it to toss to the Innkeeper’s health. He was a bodyguard and at times you had to do this to protect your customer. While examining the shot he guessed what poison it was, it was not too harmful but it was enough to make a person unable to travel. Kiki tried to do everything in her power to harm Hotori, did she not? But she did not realise that Isamu was a professional and there was nothing he would not do for the woman he loved. It would make travelling for him difficult but he would bear it and when they rested he would try and get enough time to fully recover and not worry anyone. Haru’s eyes looked into his own, but at Hotori’s nod he seemed to leave the matter be, at least for the time being. No doubt he would ask him later on. He knew the man by now and though he respect him as their new leader, well, he was still the second eldest, the second in command and he would not have it any other way to be honest, he trusted Haru almost as he trusted his own judgement and that had never happened before, not even when he was a General of Konan. He was a bit worried when Hotori ate but spoke no word. Yet as they thanked the Innkeeper she got up and did a sweet courtesy. It was then Haro spoke and the silence that had followed which connected with the fact that they were enjoying a meal was broken and for some reason Isamu felt much better. There had been a moment where the silence was rather uncomfortable.
"We're ready…I assume our little lady will be riding with you?”
Isamu nodded to Haru and immediately got up and then moved Hotori’s seat for her so she could easily get up. Of course he did not expect the half-teasing yet half-realistic comment Haru threw his way. He turned to look at him and could see the grin, Isamu rubbed the back of his head bashfully and said, “It will have to be so, I requested horses but they had a limited number. Would you be happy with that arrangement Hotori-sama? Or would you prefer to ride and I could walk? I do not mind either…” although, he would truly love to hold her in his arms and that long journey would allow him that luxury… He realised he blushed lightly at the thought and then turned so no one would watch him act like a fool in front of al the seishi and his miko. He ealized Hotori tensed a bit and he hoped she would not have the same reaction as last night but…she had told him she did not mean what she had said, and had asked for forgiveness. Surely that meant she would like to ride with him? And didn’t she just call him…well… ‘her man’? He blushed even more as he led them to the stables and was glad for the relative darkness of the room.
Isamu nodded when Haru and Sei settled to their respective horse and then he smiled at Hotori and led her to a beautiful black stallion. The horse nudged Isamu to greet him and the bodyguard laughed softly feeling for a moment as if he were that young boy who lived in happiness and with no darkness in his heart. He caressed the horse’s mane and then turned to help Hotori to sit on the front. He noticed Hotori blushed lightly but decided to ignore it for the time being an once she was sitting comfortably in front, he led the horse to the door and opened it for them and Haru to ride out. Once the horses were out he closed the doors and then jumped atop the horse, behind Hotori.
Before he even realised what he was doing or saying, he wrapped her with one arm as gently as a lover’s caress and took the reins with his other hand while whispering, “my miko…” No one else was looking, and so he sealed his words by kissing her cheek and holding her gently closer to him, and then he gently kicked at the horse with his heels and it moved to a walk and soon after a sitting trot. He was truly magnificent a rider and the horse travelled with ease at the linking of movement between horse and rider. Isamu always smiled when he rode on a horse, it was such an experience, such a comfort. After that the horses moved at a light canter so they could enjoy the light of dawn and the beautiful landscape, he also had to ensure he knew when to turn since they would be taking an abandoned road that only Isamu used and it was more direct and enjoyable, few bandits roamed that area since no travellers passed through. They rode for a very long time, and crossed beautiful streams and passed through beautiful and delightful flowers full of colour and fragrance. He would at time pick a flower and place it behind Hotori’s ear or would give it to her for her to enjoy and treasure. He would smile at her and hold her tenderly. He would also ensure the fellowship traveled safely and that Haru and Sei were comfortable and not too tired to keep on enjoying the trip. Hotori would point out some rare and beautiful bird for Hotori to see and whenever their horses would walk, he would draw his instrument and play at leisure to keep the party entertained and to please the woman he loved. He would play with his arms around her, as if making her part of the beautiful melodies he would play, and he would encourage her to sing.
But then, around midday, as they galloped a bit faster to reach the cove they would stay at, Isamu experienced the first signs of the poison in his body. He felt dizzy and he knew they best stop. Lucky for him they reached the cove and so he dismounted saying, “We will be staying here to rest, it is safe, warm and has supplies should we need any.” He turned to help Hotori descend and smile down at her for a moment. “Rest here, I will be back.”
He drew his sword and said, “After being in bed for days I need to practice and regain fitness, I will be back shortly.” He nodes at Haru which mean he left him in charge and without another word he left the group and walked toward a small an unused path which led to a small valley, he would practice his skills there and allow the poison to work in his body before it disappeared. After walking for a while he realised he was beginning to stagger and he took off at a run. He reached the valley not long after and drawing his long blade, Rin, he began to practice some moves.

“It will have to be so, I requested horses but they had a limited number. Would you be happy with that arrangement Hotori-sama? Or would you prefer to ride and I could walk? I do not mind either…”
"There is no sense in you walking, Isamu-kun." Hotori assured gently. "We have a long trip ahead of us, and..." She blushed faintly, and looked away from Haru. "I don't mind riding with you." She was quite looking forward to it, actually. It would mean several hours of riding in Isamu's arms, and she knew any embrace would be a rare but welcome treat, now that they were not locked away in private. She followed the others to the stables and smiled when she watched Isamu interact with their horse. He was so good with all animals, and it only served to prove in her mind that he must be as wonderful a person as she thought he was. Animals were wonderful judges of character, after all.
Once they were on the move, Hotori happily settled into a comfortable position, with Isamu's arms around her as they rode. The smiles and laughter came easily to her lips, and she did indeed treasure the flowers and glimpses of birds. When they slowed to a walk, and he played for them, she recalled songs from their land she had heard on their travels, and sang along happily. Part of her hoped they would never reach their destination, as she wished to stay forever in this blissful, comfortable state. She felt she loved Isamu even more, with each of his small acts, than she had already...and she hadn't even known that was possible.
Haru watched the pair, and had to shake his head. How could they both be so in love, and not simply tell one another. Hotori seemed to have no qualms with telling the rest of the world, and yet her mouth seemed to seal itself shut when it came to telling the one person who actually mattered. And yet, Isamu seemed to show his feelings with all of his actions, and couldn't seem to bring himself to speak the simple words either. Hotori had said she didn't know if he loved her as well, but now Haru was convinced she must be blind to miss the signs. A lack of communication, he thought, was a terrible thing...
About midday, they reached their resting spot, and as Isamu dismounted, Hotori sensed more than saw something...off...with him, just for a moment. He quickly recovered and said he was going to practice before telling her to rest there and leaving Haru in charge. Hotori paced for a moment, trying to figure out what it was she had sensed. She looked over at Haru, but didn't say anything, knowing Isamu wouldn't like to appear weak in front of the others, especially if she had just imagined it.
Haru's seishi ability had sensed the minute poison working in Isamu's body, but he could also tell, compared to what he'd just recovered from, this was nothing to worry about, and would pass through his system shortly. That explained the odd action earlier at the inn when he'd taken Hotori's drink. If Haru had to bet money, he'd blame that red haired woman that Hotori had slapped. He wouldn't put it past her to try and poison Hotori to keep them at the inn a little longer. He made sure Sei was alright before, finally tired of watching Hotori pace, he spoke up from where he was resting, relaxed. "You know, Hotori-chan, your man might get thirsty practicing like that...why don't you take him some water?"
Hotori looked up, grateful for the excuse to go check on Isamu, even if it did come with a teasing comment. Still, she bit her lip softly before replying. "Isamu-kun told me to rest here..." Even as she protested, feebly, really, she moved to get one of the canteens of water.
"Sei's headache free...I think you'll be alright on the short walk to take him some water." Haru replied casually. "Nurse Hotori needs to make sure her patient is still recovering well..." He added with a wink.
Hotori blushed, but said nothing as she snatched up the water and took off down the path in the direction Isamu had gone. It didn't take her long to reach where Isamu was, and she couldn't help but stand, out of sight, and watch him practice for a long moment. There was something poetic about the way he moved, and she found herself smiling. That was, until she noticed the occasional fumble in his stop. So there was something wrong with him then. Was it his injury? Or something else? She nearly turned and ran to get Haru without ever making her presence known, but once again she hesitated. Perhaps it would be wise to find out what was wrong before going to get Haru, that way Haru would know what he'd need to do. She took a deep calming breath and started forward.
A twig snapped underfoot, and she paused on instinct. It probably wasn't wise to sneak up an a man with a sword, but it was in her nature to move quietly, not wanting to disturb someone. She shook her head slightly, and started forward once more, calling out to him as she emerged, so he would know she was not an enemy. "Isamu? I brought you some water..." She said, holding up the canteen to show him. She smiled as she greeted him, but her thoughts were tinged with worry. "Are you alright?" She asked, approaching him at last, once she was sure he knew it was her.
She moved up, close to him, and looked up into his amber eyes, trying to gauge what might be the matter. She hoped he wouldn't try to deny something was wrong. She reached up and gently touched his cheek. "Perhaps you should rest for a little. You have already shown your reflexes and skills are as strong as before. I don't think a little water and rest would be too terribly harmful..."

"There is no sense in you walking, Isamu-kun… We have a long trip ahead of us, and… I don't mind riding with you.”
A sharp move to the right and Isamu’s blade swung expertly before he jumped back and slashed forth twice. He was glad to see he was still fit and could move with the same speed and agility as usual. He did not lose that much fitness back then. But his mind was also going round the incidents of that day so far and Hotori’s words. Could it be that she was too shy to show directly how much she enjoyed being around him? she had said she did not mind riding with him, and yet she had blushed. And then, once they red on she was laughing and talking and smiling at him and his heart would melt with every gesture in her kind face. But he did not wish to speak his feelings openly in case it forced her to comply. She was just too sweet not to do so in order to protect his feelings. She was that selfless… and though he had heard her again, what could worse mean to someone who acted differently when in the presence of the loved one? And yet she had never told him that she loved him, could it be she simply said that to protect him from Kiki? He ducked a tree branch, whenever he practiced he ensured not to harm anything around nature. He loved the environment too much and he could easily practice without causing harm. If he did, then wouldn’t that contradict his promise of not harming anyone or anything unless to preserve the life of his charge and his own?
He closed his eyes and decided to test his recent wound and jumped and circled in the air before landing soundlessly on the ground and slashing in front and behind with one swift movement. He could tell Haru’s skills were truly astounding. Now only could he heal the body but also renee energy, that was probably why it could drain him. It was difficult to admit it but, he cared or the other swish and saw in Haru a brother-at-arms. Despite the competitively between them which easily came to light the moment they met, circumstances made them bond in ways neither of them though possible. He jumped forth and it was then he became aware of a presence, he closed his eyes for a moment and circled around and kicked in the air holding his blade like a katana in a straight line. Yes, this was Hotori and though he had told her to rest with the others, for some reason, she worried about him. Had she sensed the poison then? He did not want her to know, she would blame herself and he id not want that. He blushed lightly considering she had been spying on his training but he decided to let her watch as much as she liked, there surely was no harm in that right?
But, his body was still recovering form previous wounds and poison and the long ride and truing had been too much for him to bear. And he felt great pain on his chest and he stabbed the edge of his blade on the ground to try and hide the pain. He gasped and placed a hand on his forehead feeling much more dizzy. He was glad, however, that he was suffering this instead of Hotori. It might seem strange but he was used to some kinds of poison getting his body used to some types, he had to do this to preserve his life, and to learn about poisons to protect his charge. This poison was nothing serious, however, that did not guarantee it would be pain free…He managed to keep himself stained still and not faltering when he heard her approach. Even before she stepped on the leaf he knew who it was and he said softly, “Hotori…” he did not turn to look at her, and though he was a bit upset that she did not heed his words, something inside him told him he needed her close to him, he needed to hold her, kiss her, tell her how he felt…
She approached silently, like a young rabbit or a beautiful small bird. She moved shyly and he could not avoid smiling for a moment. He was glad he had been practicing with his weapons for that would easily justify the fact that his face was now covered in sweat although he knew that in truth it was the poison that made him feel cold and hot at the same time. He had to ensure she knew he was fine and once she left then he could give in to the poison and let it work for a couple of hours. He would be feeling better by then.
And yet…
They had promised not to lie to one another. He could not make her believe that he would lie to her form now on and wasn’t love meant to be based on trust and communication? He took a deep breath as he heard her approach, she was so caring…she worried so much for his sake and it seemed to him that lately he was always getting injured. Did she hate him for that? It was non intentional but she had to understand, he was her bodyguard, her protector and seishi, he gladly tok every beating necessary to spare her the pain, his body, it was strong and would heal with time. He had experienced far worse things in the past, but now, it felt as if he had someone to live for, someone to protect and cherish and he would be damned if he allowed anything to give her so much as a scratch. No, Hotori would never be harmed if he could help it.
He lifted his blade one more time, his fringe covering his eyes as he trawled the blade form one hand to the other and as he turned he threw his blade into the sky and it swung before he fought it with his other hand. He lightly stumbled but used his balance to kick to his right and then painted. He placed a hand on his wound and hit it lightly and smiled, yes, he was almost like new, he would have to thank Haru for working so hard to mend him, he was sure the man overworked himself even if he would never admit it. Just as he did most of the times… He removed some sweat form his forehead with his gloved arm and then felt her even closer than before, he kept his back to her, he id not want her to look into his eyes and guess how he was feeling, what has happening within him. He did not want her to suffer nor to blame herself. Oh no, he could not bear it.
"Isamu? I brought you some water… Are you alright?”
He painted a little, why did she care so much about him? How could she guess he needed water? Oh Hotori, loving her was like a dream, like standing in meadow at night, watching the stars glitter and the bright moon as it smiled down upon you and assured you that if you extend your arm you could touch it. But it was as painful as the greatest of wounds for he had to restrain himself from showing his own emotions, from holding her against him whenever he wished and kiss those lips that tortured him now twenty-four hours a day. He sighed and almost felt like crying due to all these bottled emotions, he only managed to mutter, “Hotori…” his miko was here, just when he needed her the most, like she had been back then… He shivered lightly, “Hotori…” he whispered and felt a few tears fall from his eyes and he fell on one knee, dropping his sword Rin and leaning his hand on the grass. He was overwhelmed by her love and appreciation and as the strong wind touched hero faces, the cloak and hair, he closed his eyes to appease all these tempestuous emotions that were taking hold of him, he did not wish to appear weak but… Hotori was his weakness and whenever she was nearby he became a human once more…
He looked at her hand as she held out the canteen for him, but alas, at this moment he forgot completely about the poison, the wounds, his tired body and listened to his injured soul. He longed for her, for her touch, for that bright smile in her lips and to stare endlessly into those anger abysses of hers. He closed his eyes and then suddenly winced loudly and placed a hand on his chest and clutched at it, his hand resting on the ground took hold of the land around and clutched at it as if trying to get enough energy to fight back the poison and at the same time overcome this ocean of feelings that was about to drown him. He closed his eyes and hoped she would stay away from him or else he would be unable to refrain himself from reaching out to her any longer. There was just so much he could do to stop himself…only so much… The Ice Knight had met his match in power. Love was just too strong for someone as cold as him even.
But no, the sweet miko did not stay away and rather moved closer. He would feel her but inches away from him and could even sense her breathing, the beating of her heart, the movements of her legs and arms and how her hair elegantly fluttered about her with the loving caress of the wind. Oh Suzaku…how cruel could the god of love be to this poor knight! And then he felt…her touch…She touched his cheek and his closed eyes opened once more, emotion filled them and his tears lightly escaped his eyes, he leaned to the touch and closed his eyes for a moment to avoid looking weak and pathetic…
“Perhaps you should rest for a little. You have already shown your reflexes and skills are as strong as before. I don't think a little water and rest would be too terribly harmful…”
But then the pain increased and he did not want Hotori to run and warn Haru, no, he had been weak enough in their eyes. He could take this feeble poison, and he would show them… He leaned forth weakly feeling the pain but his eyes opened then and fixed upon hers. He took her hand and said, “Hotori…” and he pulled her into an embrace unable to stop himself any further. He still felt a couple of tears for the pain was too great but he hid them behind her beautiful soft hair and he took in the fragrance of her smooth tresses before he ensured to hold her tenderly and whisper her name once more. But then the pain was too much and he finally released her from his embrace feeling rather weak and he fell on his back, his forehead covered in sweat and yet his hand held hers and he managed to whisper, “Stay…” his eyes searched for hers, and at times his vision faded… He knew he would be able to fight this easily but, with her help it would be much quicker, what made him so sure? Well, it was simple really…he was deeply in love with her and nothing would ever change that.

Hotori could tell as she watched him that he seemed to be trying to work through some sort of pain. When he collapsed to one knee, she finally joined him at his side, and gently touched his cheek. Were those...tears? She had never seen him cry before, though she seemed to do so in abundance lately, perhaps enough for both of them. This worried her more than all other signs, as it was an actual, outward sign of some inner pain. She was going to go get HAru when he grabbed her and pulled her into an embrace. Worry kept her from enjoying this embrace as she would have liked to. She realized this embrace was, for once, to comfort him, and not to comfort her. He seemed to suffer another bout of pain, and fell onto his back, though he still held her hand.
"Stay..."
She couldn't deny him such a simple request, not when he seemed to be hurting so...not when he shed tears. She worried it may be more than comforting words could handle, but she couldn't bear to leave him. She gave his hand a soft squeeze before pulling her own from his grip and standing. She moved to his head and seated herself once more, pulling his head into her lap so she could try and comfort him as she had done before. She brushed his fringe out of his face before using the edge of her sleeve to dry his face of both tears and sweat. "Shhh..." She spoke at last in a gentle, soothing tone. "I'm here, Isamu...don't worry. I won't leave you." She uncapped the canteen and moved it to his lips. "Drink, and rest. Reserve your strength."
What on Earth could be wrong with him? Surely it wasn't his wound or that horrible poison...Haru wouldn't have okayed them for travel if he was still this affected by it, and the older Seishi would be unable to hide it from the healer, due to his ability to sense such things. No, this had to be something new...but what? The only thing different on that day from just about any other time they traveled or left an inn was...the shot of digestive ale. Isamu had taken hers and drank it without much explanation. She may know little about this world, but she had always prided herself as being a smart woman...and she had the good grades to prove it.
"Oh, Isamu..." She gave a sigh as she continued to stroke his face and offer whatever comfort she could. "That horrible woman...she did something, didn't she?" If it was in the shot, it must be poison, and it had most likely been in hers, as otherwise Isamu wouldn't have felt the need to drink hers. "Is it really very bad? Isn't there anything I can do?"
She felt tears prick her eyes as she looked down at the man she loved so deeply suffering so much. She would not blame herself this time. She fully blamed that woman, and vowed that if she ever saw her again, she would make sure she knew Hotori's threats were not idle. She loved Isamu so much, she would do anything to protect him. She didn't want to cry, she didn't want to make him feel he needed to comfort her when she was trying so hard to ease his own pain.
Still, she couldn't help the few tears that rebelliously streaked down her face. Seeing him in pain made her feel pain as well, and it broke her heart that she could do little to help. If he wanted her to stay, she would. She could do litle else to help. She gave a sad sigh as she looked down at him.
"I hope you don't mind I watched you train for a few moments..." She confessed, hoping her words would offer some comfort as well, even if the actual words meant little. "I confess I find it quite fascinating to watch." She smiled. "I notice you avoided the surrounding trees..." Even in nature, he was more gentle than many would give him credit for. "I know you told me to stay with the others, but Haru-kun scouted it out and said it was safe enough for me to bring you some water. I thought you might like it, since you were practicing." She hoped he would be able to tell her what was wrong, and give her something more to do to help him, as she felt at a complete loss. She continued to make small, soothing noises as she stroked his hair back, and occassionally offered him sips of water from the canteen.

Isamu was truly relieved when Hotori did not leave, she allowed him to embrace her and seek comfort in the closeness of their bodies and in a sign of affection as a warm hug could symbolise. But he also saw concern in her beautiful emerald eyes. She worried about him and it made his heart feel lightly better although the pain was still there and his tears still blurred his amber eyes and a darkness seemed to taint their usual brightness. He had never cried since the moment he found his parents dead and his house turned to dust. No, he had also suffered greatly at the hands of that General of Kutou but aside from that he told no one and he never cried after those two occasions. But this one time it was a difficult type of pain one of the heart that could only be healed by the hands of the loved one. But how could he bring himself to earn her love now that he was so weak? Was she disgusted by seeing him cry? The Ice Knight was finally done for? Was that what this came to mean and symbolise? He had become someone who could not voice his feelings for they were so alien to him now… Ever since the incident with Aoi he shielded his heart and soul from any emotion that did not involve the need to make his protégées happy and protect them until his job was done. And now, now he was a broken man because he came to realise he could not shield himself form being human… from feeling…
He closed his eyes for a moment, fearing she might turn and leave him in the end. but she did not. She sat next to him and rested his head on her lap like she had done back at the Inn, and his eyes opened in amazement at her actions and moved to look back at her emeralds. He winced lightly and clutched his chest feeling a burning sensation and he closed his eyes for a moment. Yet, despite all that pain he recognised her warm and soft hand as it brushed his fringe and then dried out his sweat and the tears from his eyes. It was such a tender experience and he knew she was the only person he would ever allow to touch him that way. He was not too comfortable with being touched by others, however, when it came to Hotori, for some reason, he longed for her touch and welcomed it with arms wide open. Perhaps it was the love the transmuted to him or the feelings he felt for her. But her tenderness was greatly appreciated at that very moment. And he allowed her to do everything she did to comfort him which worked greatly.
“Shhh…I'm here, Isamu...don't worry. I won't leave you… Drink, and rest. Reserve your strength.”
He drank as much water as he could permit himself before he rested his head back on her lap. He felt as comforted as he had been once when someone had offended him as a child. He still remembered how he cried on his mother’s lap and she caressed his hair and kissed his cheek and he fell asleep happily. He closed his eyes for a moment and a gloved hand moved to caress her cheek for a moment before his hand dropped to his side as another wave of pain erupted within him. He shut his eyes closed and gritted his teeth, Kiki had to be allowed with Kutout for possessing such knowledge on poisons. This would not kill him but it would have caused Hotori great pain. That wench… his thoughts were interrupted when he sensed a voice once more calling out his name. His eyes opened slowly and met her gaze for a moment as he took in her words.
"Oh, Isamu… That horrible woman...she did something, didn't she? Is it really very bad? Isn't there anything I can do?”
He managed to ignore the pain enough to take a deep breath and hold her hand in his gently, “It is nothing, I am your bodyguard remember?” In all honesty all he needed was right here. Hotori was all he needed and her support and care would be more than enough to help him mend. He felt cramps all over his body and then closed his eyes for a moment but he was amazed this time she did not blame herself, it pleased him actually, “Hotori… can you not see… there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you…” He was a bit amazed that these words escaped his lips but it was the truth and if the way he usually behaved around her did not tell her how he felt then… nothing would. He felt a few tears touch his face and he looked up at her, she was crying for him? Oh how he wished she would once and for all let him know how she felt about him. How he wished that for once in his life something he truly wanted could be. Even if she spoke her feelings, would that mean he had a chance in finding happiness? He felt deep pain, not only due to the poison but what his heart made him suffer. His hand held hers still as if he also tried to comfort her. He knew the symptoms of this poison and knew they would not last long…
To her last words he gasped in pain before he whispered, “Hotori… sing for me…” Yes, her voice was one of those few things powerful enough to help him fight anything, it made him happy, for she sang like a nightingale. He closed his eyes lightly and tried to relax to her company and the soothing sound of her voice and the warm feeling of lying next to her. He felt weaker by the minute but he knew that the worse he felt the less time he would be feeling this bad… His free hand moved to cleanse her tears even when his eyes were closed he still knew where she was, he could always find her no matter what, he had sworn to protect her a long time ago, and to that promise he abode even now…after drinking poison to prevent her from suffering this pain and not being used to having that in her body. He fought the pain with the relaxation of her company and comfort. A cool breeze of air shook his hair yet he remained there, with his eyes closed and despite the pain he was happy.
"I hope you don't mind I watched you train for a few moments… I confess I find it quite fascinating to watch.”
He gritted his teeth at another wave of pain and sweat covered his forehead once more but he managed to relax and take a deep breath to reply weakly, “If it pleases you to watch…you can come and do so with no need to hide…next time.” In all honesty he never thought a lady as innocent and pure as her would ever watch a man practice the martial arts, in fact few women found that at all appealing…But then again Hotori wasn't just any woman. No, she was a wonderful person and he loved her deeply. He decided to open his eyes even if for just a moment when she spoke once more. She seemed to have taken a liking to the things he did. Was it so fascinating to her? Really?
“I notice you avoided the surrounding trees…”
He allowed a brief silence before his eyes met hers and he said earnestly, “I promised a long time ago to never take another life… if I could help it, unless the life of my protégée or my own were at risk. So I would be untrue to my word if I harmed any living thing, even trees or animals…” He weakly gasped for air at times but he managed to relax, the poison was almost gone from his body. His eyes closed a bit once more, exhausted from the battle he had undergone when he was injured and now, once again, he had to fight on to survive.
“I know you told me to stay with the others, but Haru-kun scouted it out and said it was safe enough for me to bring you some water. I thought you might like it, since you were practicing.”
He smiled for a moment, “I know you are curious by nature and I knew you were here the moment you arrived but I decided to let you watch, I…wanted you here…with me.” He began to breathe deeply like anyone did after fighting a poison and his body relaxed, he was beginning to feel sleepy but Hotori’s company would help him mend and be ready to join the group once more. He did not want to show any weakness in front of the other seishi, hopefully Hotori understood that.

“Hotori… can you not see… there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you…”
Hotori's eyes widened as she stared down at the man she loved. Did his words mean what she hoped they did? Could it really be his way of saying he cared for her the way she cared for him? She wanted that to be so, she really, really did, but part of her recalled his previous statements about being her bodyguard, and doing whatever he must to keep her safe. No, she thought sadly, this was most likely out of his sense of duty as a bodyguard than it was a confession of love. Still, she reminded herself that being near him was enough, at least until she could earn his true affection and prove she was not a child. Perhaps, when she didn't constantly need him to come to her rescue...if she could just stop doing foolish things to put herself into danger...then, maybe he would see her as the woman she was, and then she would earn his love. She could think of nothing to say that wouldn't run the risk of her making a fool out of herself, so instead, she lifted the hand she still held to her lips, and gently kissed his knuckles, brushing her lips lightly across the gloves he always wore, and hoping he would understand.
“Hotori… sing for me…”
She smiled down at him, even though his eyes were closed. Through her tears, not of pity, but of empathy, she cleared her throat and sang for him. It was a gentle song from a band she liked back in her own world. She was not sure why he seemed to enjoy her voice so much, when she had never considered it anything special, but once again, she could deny him nothing. He could ask for the moon, and if it would mean bringing a smile to his face, she would somehow bring it down to him. His hand gently stroked the tears from her cheeks, and she fought the urge to capture that hand as well, and kiss it, in lieu of kissing his skin.
But all she could think, whenever she thought of leaning down and kissing him, to ease his pain and her own heartache, was of Kiki, that horrid woman, who had tried to force herself on Isamu when he wasn't well. No, if she kissed him now, if she did anything besides offer him the gentle comfort and company she was offering now, then she would be no better than that barmaid. And if she was no better than her, her anger for all she had done would be hypocritical. As much as she wanted to tell him how she felt, and kiss away his pain, she just couldn't. Not now.
Her song finished, and she decided to fill the silence with mostly meaningless conversation. She told him she'd eatched him practice for a little bit, and had liked that he didn't strike the trees...She even explained why she had disobeyed his order to stay with the group. To her surprise, he gave her permission to watch him practice in the future without needing to hide. And when he explained why he didn't strike the plant life around him as he practiced, she felt her heart swell even more with love for this man. He truely was far more gentle than anyone else she knew.
“I know you are curious by nature and I knew you were here the moment you arrived but I decided to let you watch, I…wanted you here…with me.”
"I am here, Isamu...for as long as you need me...always." She said gently. The pain seemed to finally be ebbing away, and he looked as if he might fall asleep. Hotori took a sip of the remaining water, and cleared her throat once more as she began to sing another song for him, a lullaby she had once heard one of Haru's sisters sing to her child as it dozed against her chest. She wiped her own eyes before resuming the gentle soothing motions, brushing his hair back and gently caressing his cheek. She smoothed away the last of his tears of pain as she sang. When the song finished, she spoke softly, just barely above a whisper. "Rest, Isamu, and recover for me." His eyes were still closed, and so she dared to make one, small move...one simple thing to assuage her own need...just to kiss him once, even if not dirextly. She silently kissed her fingertips before gently touching his forehead before returning to her soothing motions once more. If he wasn't asleep, she would think of some other song to sing for him, and would keep singing until he was at peace, as it was the one thing he had requested of her.

He silently watched her as her eyes opened widely and for a moment he was hopefully she would understand what he meant for a man who was never aware of such feelings, it was not easy to make such a confession and he obviously did not find words that matched his feelings and did not know even if he did, if Hotori would understand. And it seemed that, to his grief, she did not understand the deep meaning of his words. No, she simply sat there puzzled, did she think he only did this as part of his duty for being her bodyguard? Could she not see the way his eyes shone when he looked at her and how he seemed to smile far more tan ever before when she was nearby? No, it all probably meant she did not feel the exact same way and though it saddened him, he would still love her until the end. His eyes closed when she lifted his hand and kissed his knuckles, he relaxed and felt his heartbeat increase with such a power he did not believe he would manage to keep it in check. He wondered if it was loud enough for Hotori to hear or feel. Would she think him ridiculous for being in so much pain and still have the heart to feel this strong emotion whenever she was close? Was it such a terrible thing? Yet, he did not feel bad about it, on the contrary, it felt only right that he should be true to what he felt and it almost certified that he would also mend well through the power of affection. He relaxed to her touch and sighed, never would he allow himself to lay helplessly in the arms of any other woman, no, Hotori was the only one.
When he requested her to sing for him, to hear there beautiful voice once more, he waited with his eyes closed, and soon enough her voice resounded in the depths of his pain and almost like Haru’s seishi abilities could, her voice soothed his body and the pain began to disappear leaving his battered body to recover from the pain. His breathing was much more relaxed now and he allowed the beauty of the melody in her voice and the words she uttered to ease his mind and heart. And though she probably would never guess why he had cried when he did, it was not the physical pain for he could take great pain, he had done so before… No, these tears had been for something much stronger than the body, for the emotions he hid within that ate at him. For the longing of calling her beloved and holding her against him with no excuse needed for the contact and to kiss her lips and earn her love in return. It was true that he had heard her state she loved him two times already but, it seemed to be different once she was in his company. It was almost as if she did that to keep him away from harm’s reach as any friend would for another and though he truly wished they were much more than friends, wasn’t that what she had voiced she wanted them to be? So… a deeper relationship would be impossible to obtain, she would probably worry if he tried to confess his own feigns especially when he was in so much pain.
She could probably think Isamu was in such pain that he declared his love to the first person he found and that happened to be her. They said Suzaku was the god of love but in his heart it seemed to be cruelty instead. It felt as if he played with their hearts morning and night and it was part of the reason Isamu felt exhausted. Never before had any activity or wound tired hi as much as his feelings did at present. Nonetheless, her beautiful voice resounded around hi and relaxed him and he allowed his body to kick out the remains of the poison. He also welcomed the cool breeze that caressed his face and for a moment it felt as if he were to fall into a deep sleep. But he only allowed his body to do that once the poison was completely gone.
“I am here, Isamu...for as long as you need me…always.”
His hand which held hers loosened the grip and he slowly allowed sleep to take hold of him. And at the same time a beautiful melody calmed him completely and allowed him to rest. His body no longer tensed to fight the poison but rather allowed it to leave and set his body in the path of recovery. It would not be comfortable, since poison always left you uncomfortable and weak, but Isamu was strong and after Haru’s healing he knew he would only need an hour of sleep at most. And Hotori promised to be there for him, to never leave him. If only she knew the actual meaning of her words, would she utter them so lightly? He slept at peace knowing that when he woke up she would still be there, she would not leave.
“Rest, Isamu, and recover for me.”
He felt a light touch on his forehead and it finally set him to sleep. Her last words puzzled him but he deemed it was probably just her way of trying to be encouraging. He slept peacefully for about an hour before his body relaxed completely, the sweat was removed by the blowing wind and his skin regained its usual tanned colour. His long dark hair shook with the wind and for a moment, when he woke up, he was resilient to open his eyes because he did not want to leave this position. But he knew the others would worry and he wanted to go to the campsite and ensure everyone was well. However, if just for this one moment, he would be close to Hotori again, and feel her body against his, before he had to leave.
He lightly stirred and blinking a couple of times he looked up to find her beautiful face. He gently sat back next to her and smiled, he caressed her cheek with his gloved hand and then pulled her into an embrace whispering her name, there were no words to describe how he felt for her, how grateful he was even for the benevolence with which she cared for him, for many things she did for him. As he held her there, a hand moved to caress her long hair, how he loved doing so…
But he did not wis to scare her, and so he allowed himself to hold her, if for just a moment, to cherish this closeness. “Thank you.” he whispered on her ear before his eyes locked on hers and the amber light shone even more powerful than before, affection was clearly visible in them and yet Hotori always failed to see this. He felt his heart give way and he almost leaned to kiss her lips. But he slowly moved to get up and help her to her feet. He sheathed his sword and then said, “Hotori, I know we will set camp here, if you would like I could help you learn how to shoot your arrows… If you would like me to that is…” Even if she did not use them it would be good exercise for her, would help her have a better balance and stronger arms. And he knew just the way to avoid using trees for targets…

As Hotori watched Isamu sleep, she wished she allowed her mind to wander. She wished she could turn off her ability to sense her Seishi's emotions...or better still, she wished she could turn off her own, just for a moment, so she could know which feelings were hers and which belonged to Isamu. She could see love reflected in his eyes...but what if that was simply because she loved him so much, she wished to see it there? She could sense little droplets of hurt and sadness, but what if those weren't his? What if they were simply her own inner turmoil confusing her mind? The doubt, she was positive was her own...even though he had given her no reason to doubt him, and had told her again and again not to doubt herself. She knew if her aunt was there, she would tell her to be honest with Isamu...to tell him how she felt. But if he didn't return her feelings, she'd feel like a fool, and that would make the rest of her task as the Suzaku no Miko much more difficult.
Thinking of her role, here within the book, and of her aunt brought about a new wave of doubts. She was not part of this world, and never would be. She was only a visitor. Surely he would not fall in love with someone he knew would be leaving sooner rather than later. He had his entire life ahead of him to find someone in his own world to make him happy...why would he waste his feelings on her? She didn't think, once she returned home, that she would ever love another, but telling him how she felt might make him wait for her anyway, and she didn't want him to be lonely. He worked so hard to make others happy...and all she wanted was for him to be happy himself. That was where her true happiness would lie...even if it wasn't with her. It couldn't be with her.
'Oh Suzaku...' she thought silently as she leaned her head back and closed her eyes for just a moment. 'Why would you let me find him...love him...if we can never be?' She opened her eyes and looked down at him once more. He looked far more peaceful and at ease than she had ever seen him, and she thought he was truly beautiful. She realized she never wanted to be without him again. But that wasn't possible. The only way she could remain in the book would be to never summon Suzaku...but that would mean she would be letting down the rest of her Seishi, and the entire Konan Empire...and-she thought with a blush-she would never be able to consummate their love, even if the feelings were returned. But she also couldn't ask him to abandon the life he knew here to return to her world with her, even if such a thing was possible, and Hotori wasn't sure that it was. It broke her heart to think of it, but no matter how much she loved him, she could see no way for them to be together.
She pushed all of those thoughts aside. She could do nothing about them, and running around in mental circles would only further upset her. She knew Isamu didn't like to see her upset, so she would focus on something happy instead, so she could greet him with a smile when he woke. She dried her eyes on her sleeve before taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. She was here, in this beautiful place, and the man she loved was close and completely at ease. She felt comfortable and safe, and she would allow herself these few quiet moments of happiness. Since arriving in this world, she had gotten better at judging the passage of time without the use of a watch. Before this, she had always been the sort to check the time on her cell phone, but her phone battery had been dead for weeks, and she had never gotten any reception here anyway. She wished she had thought to take a picture of Isamu and the others with her phone before it had died. That way, she could've taken some little reminder home with her...even if they wouldn't have understood what she was doing. After he had slept for about an hour, she noticed Isamu began to stir.
She leaned forward slightly, just to better see, watching him for any last traces of he pain he had shone before. He blinked up at her a couple of times, and she smiled brightly down at him. "Feeling better?" She asked softly, though she noticed his color had returned, and was sure he was much better now. He sat up, and smiled as he caressed her cheek, and she couldn't help but smile more for the simple touch. He pulled her into an embrace, and whispered her name, and she couldn't stop herself from relaxing into it. His arms felt so nice around her, that she didn't ever want this moment to end. He touched her hair, and whispered "Thank you.", and as she looked into his eyes, she felt the urge to give in and kiss him stronger than she ever had before.
Surely, he had to know how she felt about him...Haru had told her she was terrible at lying and hiding her feelings...so perhaps the affection she thought she saw there really was just her imagination, as she loved him so much she wanted him to love her in return. Otherwise, why would he not act on his feelings...just tell her how he felt? She felt her mind start down that path once more, and stopped it, forcing herself into the present as he finally pulled away and stood up, holding out a hand to help her up. She took the offered hand, and wished, just for a moment, that he didn't have to wear those gloves all the time. She wanted to feel his hand-his actual hand-within hers, just once. She dusted herself off, more out of habit than anything else, as Isamu sheathed his sword, but looked up when he spoke to her again.
“Hotori, I know we will set camp here, if you would like I could help you learn how to shoot your arrows… If you would like me to that is…”
Haru and Sei had both worked with her to improve her archery skills, as a condition of getting the weapon so she could protect herself, and she had gotten high marks when learning it for class, but she accepted the fact that she was nowhere near battle-ready, and was very little help when hunting. Perhaps more practice would be good...besides, it would be an excuse to spend more time with Isamu, and that was never something she'd complain about. "Yes, that sounds good." She said with a smile as she knelt to pick up the mostly empty canteen. "I suppose my skills do need improving...I'll never be much help to the group otherwise..." she chuckled. There was just something about being able to promise them she could look out for herself, even if none of them gave her the chance to, that made Hotori feel like she could at least contribute something. She did not like the thought of being the pampered Lady who always needed rescuing, even if that was mostly the truth. "My bow and arrows are back at camp...we'd have to go get them first..."

Isamu was glad that some of his clothes were brand new since the poison had made him sweat quite a lot. In fact, now that he thought about it, there was a small warm stream nearby and he could easily go there and take a quick bath so his plan now was to help Hotori as much as he could with her archery skills, since he had been used to teaching others in the past as part of his job as a General of Konan. Then, he would excuse himself and then go to the warm stream and bathe himself from the sweat and the remnants of the poison. He also wanted to look at his wound and hoped he would not get a nasty scar. He was tired of them, he only had a few small ones but, there was one, on his other side, that reminded him daily of that one person who had betrayed him. His eyes darkened for a moment but, he decided to ignore his past. His hand instinctively moved to his side, where the scar lied and his eyes looked lost in thought. He still did not understand why Aoi had done what she did.
Maybe he was too innocent or foolish back then. But this was the one experience that kept telling him no one could ever love him and if that came to pass, as it now did with Hotori… well, he could not bring himself to believe that even possible. He had been in love before, probably not as deeply as he felt for Hotori, but he had given that one person all he could think of, and yet, she never love him. She only played with his feelings, lured him into the trap and helped his Nemesis bring him immeasurable pain. it was one of the reasons he wanted to protect Hotori with his life, she was such a beautiful person in eery aspect of her that…he could not let someone as twisted as Asharim destroy her, destroy his miko… His eyes softened and a hand moved to the necklace that now hung around his neck and his hand gently caressed the amber rock and closed a hand around it. A light smile graced his lips, he had never received anything form anyone before and at first he did not know how to react, but Hotori never minded, she did not judge him for the way he acted. She respected him.
Turning to look at her his eyes softened even more. No, he could not compare this pure being with that poisonous viper. Hotori was nothing like Aoi, for the later was evil and twitted from the very beginning and incapable of all the selfless acts Hotori had showered him with. He still remembered the many times she had looked after her bodyguard and he wondered why she did not complain already for the many times he managed to get injured. He looked deeply into her eyes, “Hotori, you never seem to mind… you are always here, always loyal to your seishi even when at times we fail.” His eyes closed for a moment, he knew he could not stop his feelings now, nor did he want to. Yet, to honour them he would protect her more closely and not only that but he would ensure to make her happy for as long as she graced this world. Before she returned to her own lands… His eyes were still fixed upon hers and he gently leaned forth and kissed her forehead, the seishi symbol on his forehead shone for a moment and he was not sure why that had happened. But he took a few steps back still smiling at his miko, his beloved miko.
"Yes, that sounds good… I suppose my skills do need improving...I'll never be much help to the group otherwise…”
He watched her pick up the water skin and he pointed to her right, “There is a small stream you can fill it in, that water is safe to drink , I have sued this road often.” To her words he added, “You just need practice, as with everything, once you have the technique, its all in the practice… And I know the right place for this…” there was a rock, being s some waterfalls and it was arched, to would take her a while to actually get to the target but it would render her confidence since it would be a complicated task.
"My bow and arrows are back at camp...we'd have to go get them first…”
He smiled to himself, “That won’t be necessary…” Looking around he closed his eyes for a moment before he mocked the call of a hawk. He took out some dry meat and held it in his gloved hand as he called again. He stood still for a few minutes until a light brown hawk squealed and landed on the hand that held the meat. He allowed it to eat before he whispered some things and caressed the hawk on the stomach. After lifting his hand he allowed his feathered friend go and then said, “Follow me…”
He waited for Hotori to follow him and he led her through a path of pebbles along a river, he offered her his hand when he spotted slippery pebbles and finally they reached a mighty waterfall where a rock could be seen inside. “That is your target Hotori.” And just as he spoke the hawk called out to him and he lifted a hand and caught the bow and quiver. He handed them to her and waited for her to get comfortable to begin to practice.
