(OOC: My post is a little short, sorry! My brain ran out of juice.)
IC:
Kazune smiled as Chisaka and Ryou came into view on the path. They were closer to the palace now. Now with Shun's invitation to stay after their duties were done, and with the miko there, the prophecies she had heard about were beginning to feel real. She had used her powers as a seishi as a defense against those who would harm her in the past. Then, she used them to serve her country. Now, she would be using them for what they were intended. Protecting the miko of Seiryuu. Her eyes wandered to Akahana, and she wondered what was in store for such a strong miko. But...until then, she had her friends to lean on and plan for that.

“Ryou… you just had to tell her… Another of your Seishi, Miko-san. Kasai Chisaka. Her… mental strength far surpasses that of her body.”
“I heard that, soldier boy!”
Ryou shook his head, staying as close to Chisaka as he could in case she needed support, though his words were directed at the guard. “It is quite simple, my friend. I asked myself who did I fear more? And the answer guided my actions. It is true that Shun - if he were so inclined - could have me stripped of my rank and tossed out in the streets with my daughter to be penniless, honorless beggars…” He smirked, as they all knew Shun would never do such a thing. “But Chisaka could leave me a drooling mass in a cellar somewhere, unable to care for myself or even recognize my little Kaoru-chan. With that thought in mind, I chose self-preservation.”
Shun, however, looked worried. He stopped walking, turning to the other young woman. “Chisaka, I know you are eager to meet Akahanna, but honestly! We’d have been at the palace within the half hour, and I would’ve come to get you to meet her then…”
”I could hardly be expected to let the Miko come to us from another world, and not at least greet her before she arrived at the palace, my Emperor. She came so far, I can at least meet her… if not halfway, then at least as far as I am able to come.”
“You are too kind to come to greet me, I heartily appreciate it.”
The young Emperor sighed. Those who knew him were well aware - as Akahanna would soon learn - He was prone to fretting over Chisaka because of her poor health and their close friendship since childhood. With a soft apology to his companion, he stepped away in order to pull off his cloak and gently drape it around Chisaka’s shoulders. “Be that as it may, you’ve already had our medicine tonight. You should be resting - and I saw how tired you looked in the eyes during that last meeting earlier. Besides, the night air is far too chill for you. You shouldn’t be running about like this…” He was quick to look up at Akahanna. "Not that I disagree with the sentiment. I was prepared to travel my lands from end to end and back again to find my Miko, and it was fortuitous that Seriyuu saw fit to place her so nearby." He wanted to ensure that she did not think he was angry with her because Chisaka had decided to leave the palace to meet her.
"Miko-sama… I am Kaede, though most of your companions would call me Chisaka, which of course you are welcome to use. Your arrival has been long awaited. Welcome to Kutou.”
"Please call me Akahana. It is a pleasure to finally meet you Chisaka, I have heard a lot about you, particularly how you partake in knowledge that can be acquired through arduous study. Particularly you are well erased in the astronomy of the Four Kingdoms and even have the resources of an observatory, I confess, that has always been a weakness to me, if you would ever be so kind to make a bit of time and you are not otherwise engaged, I would very much like learning to see these stars through your eyes.”
Shun smiled brightly hearing this - he had been too and grossed on his own conversation earlier to hear what his best friend and Mika were talking about - but he was glad to hear that she was already taking an interest in their world. "If that is your desire, Aka, I can show you to the Imperial Library in the morning. I've made it's point to collect information on all of the Four Kingdoms, and many of the smaller nations. Kenji-san will be able to find you all that we have on any subject that comes to your mind. And I think-" he looked to the others, as if selling their opinions, before recalling the fact for himself. "Yes, Fumiko is back from that weekend to Ongaku. She has the most exquisitely detailed maps, if that is something that would interest you." Now he offered his arm back to his companion, and resumed walking, though he fell into step on chisaka's other side partially in case she needed his support, and partially to continue this discussion with the others. Ryou fell into step easily on Shian's other side and the group nearly took up the entire width of the road, walking side by side as they were.
As they did, Shun continued to comment on the conversation topic. "I'm sure that we would all be happy to spend the day discussing any topics of your curiosities with you. I'm quite fascinated by mythology, astronomy, culture, and history, but…" He chuckled warmly. "The great irony of being the ruler of my people is that I so seldom have the time to spend among them, and get to know their culture, and feel like I am really one of them." Thus was one of his greatest regrets - he loves his people with every ounce of his being, and every portion of his soul was dedicated to them and doing what was best for them, but no matter how much she insisted that he simply wanted to do what was best for them, and to be treated as any other person would be treated, he was still treated with the deference and ridiculously archaic formality that his position as Emperor evidently demanded.
"Yes…" Ryou I spoke up, laughter evident in his voice. "That was what tonight was supposed to be all about, Akahanna-san. Shun, Shian, and myself had actually left the palace just after dinner, heading for that tavern near where we found you. You see, our Emperor is fond of playing pretend, and trying to pass for commoner in order to spend the evening socializing among his people…" He winked at the redhead. "That goes about as well as you can imagine, and fewer people than you would expect are convinced of his affected identity."
Shun nodded to guards as they entered the palace grounds proper, and continued walking. "My disguise works well enough, and it is the only way that I can spend time with my people." He pauses once they enter the large front hall. "Now, Aka, are you in need of food and rest, or would you like to continue our discussion?" He chuckled to himself again. "Then again, if you do not wish to choose, I can have some food sent up to my study, and we can all continue our discussions there. I did promise you answers about your current situation."

The little chuckle continued, bringing warmth to an otherwise stern face that few other than Shun, Chisaka, and Ryou ever saw. “If a strange man like myself must be a figment of the imagination of a Miko, at least my temperament is agreeable to your personality. I should hate to be both imaginary and distasteful… yes, I do enjoy it.” Despite his enjoyment though, he was just about to excuse himself to Akahana - in order to cross and give Chisaka his arm - when Shun stepped forward and relieved him of that duty, to sighs from the young woman. “Don’t fuss... I’m perfectly warm enough for the weather at hand, and I should think that the knowledge I have taken my medicine this evening would cause less distress, rather than more.” He draped his cloak around her, and she sighed patiently. “If I cannot walk far enough with assistance to even greet the Miko within mere walking distance of the palace, then we are truly in worse shape as an empire than is to be believed… after all, the journey we must undertake will be far more arduous than a stroll through Kutou. Now-” She turned to fall into step with them, Shun on her one side and Akahana on the other, and leaning upon her staff, began to meander back toward the palace.
Shian, well accustomed to both her temperament, and Shun’s capacity for fretting over her, made sure to keep a slower pace than what they had been, in order to accommodate her, but he was subtle enough in doing so that, if Chisaka noticed, she chose not to comment. Instead, her eyes were lighting with interest. “A fellow stargazer? Well… yes, one of the many privileges afforded me by my position is the room in the palace that is best situated for viewing stars, with a private balcony that affords an unobscured view. You must honor me with a visit, once you are settled. There is no one more knowledgeable of our stars in the whole empire, than myself.” She elbowed the Emperor then, in the manner of an annoyed younger sibling. “This one thinks I’m ill fit for any more energetic pursuits than those of the mind, so he encourages stargazing because it can be done sitting down. What he doesn’t know is-” Staff and shoe both caught on an uneven place in the road then, and she gave a tiny gasp of surprise - and a little fear - instantly grasping for Shun’s arm beside her, as an instinct against falling.

“If a strange man like myself must be a figment of the imagination of a Miko, at least my temperament is agreeable to your personality. I should hate to be both imaginary and distasteful… yes, I do enjoy it.”
Akahana blushed lightly at the teasing words coming from the mouth of the soldier escorting her and she found herself laughing softly in turn. It pleased her greatly to hear he was enjoying her conversation and company as much as she was. After all, it wasn’t every day that she could partake on witty conversation and mind games. Her only friends had been books for many years but she read most topics acquiring a level of knowledge that would have been impossible had she lived a different life, unless she were a librarian or a person who did research as a job. “And yet sir knight, you have a strange man agreable enough for a Miko who is twice as strange.” She laughed and shook her head, “I doubt you would be classed as distasteful in my books.”
It is quite simple, my friend.
Akahana heard Ryou and could not stop herself from bursting out laughing imagining both scenarios-needless to say Chisaka’s was the funniest-. She had been laughing quite a lot with Shian already and she felt breathless as she laughed at the words and the things she was imagining, she liked Chisaka more by the minute. She liked all of them the more she learned about them and their antiques, she turned toward Chisaka and said with mirth, “Would you truly do that?” It was not a tease nor something she couldn't believe for she had a strong personality and that helped her fight on the weaknesses that tried to keep her from doing her duties and that was admirable. She fought the weaknesses every day and so many people she had known in her world would complain of a little cold and then do everything at hand in order to procrastinate and not get anything done. “You are an admirable and strong lady.” She finally stopped laughing feeling the pain in her abs but not regretting the fantastic time she has had with these persons already, particularly the man escorting her.
“Chisaka, I know you are eager to meet Akahanna, but honestly! We’d have been at the palace within the half hour, and I would’ve come to get you to meet her then… Be that as it may, you’ve already had our medicine tonight. You should be resting - and I saw how tired you looked in the eyes during that last meeting earlier. Besides, the night air is far too chill for you. You shouldn’t be running about like this…”
“Don’t fuss... I’m perfectly warm enough for the weather at hand, and I should think that the knowledge I have taken my medicine this evening would cause less distress, rather than more.”
“If I cannot walk far enough with assistance to even greet the Miko within mere walking distance of the palace, then we are truly in worse shape as an empire than is to be believed… after all, the journey we must undertake will be far more arduous than a stroll through Kutou. Now-”
Just then Akahana learned more about Shun and Chisaka and she was intrigued. They spoke as if they had known each other since childhood and her health seemed to be of great concern to him. She would have to take that into account, the last thing she wanted was to have a negative effect on the health of one of her Seishi and worry the Emperor unnecessarily. It was then that she gave Chisaka a meaningful look. If there came a point where she could no longer walk she did not mind carrying her, she assumed it would be less embarrassing if a woman carried her right? But she did not oice her thought to also indicate that she respected her to know how far she could go and she would not patronise her for she admired the strength she possessed. She was sure it would not be needed though, for they were also in a party and if she required any help she would ask for it, no doubt. Still, the polite thing was to offer her help if needed. Especially when she went through the trouble of walking all this way to greet her and make her feel at home, she wanted Chisaka to know she could lean on her if she ever needed. It was the last thing she could do for the Celestial Warriors that wished to fulfil their duties and grant her their friendship and protection. It was such an alien feeling but one she welcomed, knowing that perhaps in this place she could have the life she had always wanted.
"Not that I disagree with the sentiment. I was prepared to travel my lands from end to end and back again to find my Miko, and it was fortuitous that Seriyuu saw fit to place her so nearby."
Now that was something Akahana was not used to, being the centre of attention and it made her blush slightly and look away, “I’m grateful you would go to such lengths.” She was shocked too. No one had ever said or done anything of the like for her. In fact, if anything she had only had bad experiences with the few persons she knew from her world, apart from her friend Gina. She looked into his eyes for a moment trying to convey she really appreciated being here but she could not find the words. Instead she gae Shun a brief smile and then felt Kazune’s eyes on hers. She nodded at her, these were her Seishi and she wanted to look after them just as much as they wished to use their powers and skills to ensure her safety.
"If that is your desire, Aka, I can show you to the Imperial Library in the morning. I've made it's point to collect information on all of the Four Kingdoms, and many of the smaller nations. Kenji-san will be able to find you all that we have on any subject that comes to your mind. And I think-Yes, Fumiko is back from that weekend to Ongaku. She has the most exquisitely detailed maps, if that is something that would interest you."
Akahana’s eyes sparkled with interest, they had more people versed in things that she was greatly keen on? How was that possible? “I would be delighted to visit your library and to speak with Fumiko-sama if she is free.” Did the lady specialise in cartography? They were spoiling Akahana rotten and she knew it but she was enjoying every minute of it and she already had a curious smile on her lips, “Thank you Shun-kun.” Since he felt comfortable enough to shorten her name she decided she would try the same, she had never done it before but it felt like she could trust him not to feel offended. It could be said that ever since she arrived in Kutou she had been feeling more adventurous and, albeit a bit awkward at times, she knew that with practice and experience she would soon be able to express herself properly like any person who had enjoyed a normal social life.
"I'm sure that we would all be happy to spend the day discussing any topics of your curiosities with you. I'm quite fascinated by mythology, astronomy, culture, and history, but… The great irony of being the ruler of my people is that I so seldom have the time to spend among them, and get to know their culture, and feel like I am really one of them."
Akahana chuckled and then said, “Reading is a weakness of mine so I assure you, should you test me in any such subjects you would be surprised I could easily keep up with you.” She was lightly teasing the emperor but then she added, “Mind you, there are many in any world with such taste for books unable to engage in conversation on such topics either because they are considered socially outdated or because some persons believe the mind to be a triviality, of course I disapprove of both.”
"Yes… That was what tonight was supposed to be all about, Akahanna-san. Shun, Shian, and myself had actually left the palace just after dinner, heading for that tavern near where we found you. You see, our Emperor is fond of playing pretend, and trying to pass for commoner in order to spend the evening socializing among his people… That goes about as well as you can imagine, and fewer people than you would expect are convinced of his affected identity."
“My disguise works well enough, and it is the only way that I can spend time with my people."
Akahana laughed softly at the topic of conversation and then said, “If the Lord is so confident of his mingling skills then he would not oppose inviting a judge along the next outing? And since I can hold my liquor and do enjoy a good drink and merry company, I dare say I accept the challenge of making my mind whether Shun-kun is indeed capable of masking his identity for at the moment I am of two minds, the one that finds it impossible to picture our Emperor with his habits and intricacies acting like a farmer and the other that crates the amusement of such a spectacle, no offence meant.” She chuckled looking at Shun.
"Now, Aka, are you in need of food and rest, or would you like to continue our discussion? Then again, if you do not wish to choose, I can have some food sent up to my study, and we can all continue our discussions there. I did promise you answers about your current situation."
Akahana chuckled for a moment, “That was not the smoothest change of topic.” She laughed, noticing Shun did his best to avoid being teased and yet his friends enjoyed it. But this one time she was masking her embarrassment as she nearly felt her stomach growl at the mention of food. She then said, “If you are not otherwise engaged perhaps your study and a light meal would be the best option?” She walked on the other side of Chisaka as they made their way back to the palace.
“A fellow stargazer? Well… yes, one of the many privileges afforded me by my position is the room in the palace that is best situated for viewing stars, with a private balcony that affords an unobscured view. You must honor me with a visit, once you are settled. There is no one more knowledgeable of our stars in the whole empire, than myself.”
She could scarcely believe she was to spend her time with people who had ast knowledge on a series of topics she was greatly interested in. She could not thank Seriyuu enough! She smiled at Chisaka and said, “I would like that very much, I confess I have no knowledge of the astronomy of the Four Kingdoms but I can share what I do know of my world.”
“This one thinks I’m ill fit for any more energetic pursuits than those of the mind, so he encourages stargazing because it can be done sitting down. What he doesn’t know is-”
Akahana smiled brightly at Chisaka as she spoke of the Emperor but her reflexes noticed her stumble and she quickly grabbed Chisaka’s arm on her side and noticed that she had moved to hold onto Shun on the other side too. Hopefully that would help stabilise her, she did not want her falling down and injuring herself. This granted her a moment to look at everyone in the party, if they needed her to become their Miko, any uncertainty she had felt before they reached the castle had disappeared, she was determined to help them and their Kingdom.

"Don’t fuss... I’m perfectly warm enough for the weather at hand, and I should think that the knowledge I have taken my medicine this evening would cause less distress, rather than more.”
Shun sighed patiently. This was clearly a topic they bickered about at length on a regular basis. “You always complain that the medicine makes you sleepy. If you have already taken it, it would stand to reason that you should be resting.”
”If I cannot walk far enough with assistance to even greet the Miko within mere walking distance of the palace, then we are truly in worse shape as an empire than is to be believed… After all, the journey we must undertake will be far more arduous than a stroll through Kutou. Now-”
Again, Shun sounded patient. “There will be plans made to make the journey as efficient and comfortable as possible. We will not be going all over the land on foot.”
“I dare say…” Ryou spoke up with a smirk. “The Emperor would carry you on his back before he allowed that to happen.”
Shun shot Ryou a look, but otherwise ignored his comment. He was enjoying the conversation as they walked, and already mentally mapping out how to best introduce Akahanna to everything she seemed interested in. It was clear, as talk shifted away from his worry for Chisaka that he was just as fascinated by the topics of astronomy and culture as Akahanna and Chisaka.
“I would be delighted to visit your library and to speak with Fumiko-sama if she is free. Thank you Shun-kun.”
Shun chuckled. “I do believe Fumiko would blush herself to pieces, if you called her by such a title. You’ll find that most of the people you are likely to encounter are not big on formality, unless we must abide by it for matters of state. Still, she should be coming to meet with myself and Chisaka in the morning to discuss her trip. If you are not otherwise occupied, you can join us for tea and we can all have a nice chat.”
“Reading is a weakness of mine so I assure you, should you test me in any such subjects you would be surprised I could easily keep up with you. Mind you, there are many in any world with such taste for books unable to engage in conversation on such topics either because they are considered socially outdated or because some persons believe the mind to be a triviality, of course I disapprove of both.”
“A weakness?” Shun repeated with a chuckle. “I’d say it’s a strength. Knowledge is power, and the one who reads - and can understand and engage with the knowledge they gain - that one holds all the power in the world.” He laughed more heartily. “Such a test would be unfair on one side or the other. I can tell you all of the mythology and history of our world, but I know nothing of yours. I believe it will make for very interesting conversations for some time to come.”
“If the Lord is so confident of his mingling skills then he would not oppose inviting a judge along the next outing? And since I can hold my liquor and do enjoy a good drink and merry company, I dare say I accept the challenge of making my mind whether Shun-kun is indeed capable of masking his identity for at the moment I am of two minds, the one that finds it impossible to picture our Emperor with his habits and intricacies acting like a farmer and the other that crates the amusement of such a spectacle, no offence meant.”
“A farmer?” Ryou laughed . “That would never pass. Shun pretends to be the ill mannered son of a minor merchant.” He grinned more brightly. “You can hold your drink, you say? What a refreshing idea. I know some who cannot, and it’s quite the shame…” His eyes darted to Shian, but he said nothing more.
“If certain people could behave themselves and not bring up inappropriate conversation topics…” Shun gave Ryou another look. “Then it could be fun to take you with us some time. At minimum, you would get to see some local food and drink.”
“That was not the smoothest change of topic. If you are not otherwise engaged perhaps your study and a light meal would be the best option?”
Shun blushed faintly at the comment on his change of topic, but didn't otherwise acknowledge it. “Tes, that is quite easy to arrange Once we get up there, Ryou can run down and have dinner brought up.”
“Have I been demoted from General to errand boy? I thought Shian usually did those things for you…” Ryou took on a look of mock offense, though his smile made it clear this was all fairly normal for them,
“It’s simple.” Shun replied. “Shian has not gotten on my nerves this evening. It’s an Emperor’s prerogative to assign whomever they like to fetch and carry.”
The pair were having this little discussion while Chisaka and Akahanna discussed stargazing, but Shun heard the small gasp at the same instant that he heard her staff and foot slip. Turning toward her even as she reached to grip his arm for support, he managed to catch her, wrapping both arms around her middle and holding her up against his chest until her footing was secure once more. Fear and worry were clear in his green eyes as he looked down at her. “This is why I always ask you to wear the boots instead of your geta. These don’t have the traction needed for the uneven ground.” This wasn’t a scold, but simply an expression of his concern. “Even slippers like Mother wears would be better…” It would be clear to those that know him that her near slip had scared him a bit too. Once he was sure she had her footing, he turned to continue to the palace, keeping one arm wrapped around her waist for support.
The path they took did not take them to the front entrance of the palace, but rather to a back gate that led into the gardens. There were no steps this way, and a guard always posted at the gate, which made it ideal. Shun recognized the guard, and gave a small wave, “Taiyo-san, I thought this was your night off.”
The guard gave a bow. “It was, sire, but my brother was feeling unwell, so I decided to cover for him.”
“I hope it’s nothing serious.” Shun replied.
“Doubtful, sir. Between us, I think he had a few too many apple tarts with dinner.” Taiyo smirked. “Tsurou has not changed since we were children…” He opened the gate wide to let them in. “This is a few more than you set out with, unless I am mistaken…”
“You are not.” Shun smiled. “I promise all introductions can be made in the morning.” He led them through the garden and up to a sliding door which, when opened, revealed a sitting room most would recognize. It was Shun’s sitting room, near his bedroom and office. Once inside, he looked around, but shook his head. “Yes, the study would be better.” Moving through the room, he opened the door and stared down the hallway, pausing to speak to a maid they passed. “Hina-san, could you have a meal and a round of tea brought into my study, please?” There was a short discussion that followed, during which time Shun assured her they could light the fire and oil lamps themselves.
At last, Shun opened the door to his study - still supporting Chisaka with one arm - and led the group into a good sized room with a desk and two long work tables each with several chairs. It was clear that - despite being the Emperor’s private study - Shun spent very little time alone in this room. There was a large, detailed map of Kutou hanging on the wall between bookcases, with other maps, papers and books laying here and there on the desk and tables. Shun walked to one of the tables, and eased Chisaka into a chair before he turned his attention to lighting oil lamps.
“Here, let me…” Ryou said, smirking as he employed his seishi ability to get the task done in a fraction of the time. Soon the room was comfortably warm and glowing cheerfully. Shun pulled a chair out for Akahana before taking his own seat. “Now, please make yourself at home here. You are to view my study - and my palace - as your own, Akahanna, and I do hope you will settle in here soon enough.”

“With an Emperor who insists upon getting about the town in meager disguise and finding Mikos without me, how can one be expected to get any rest?” As Akahana had already noted, this kind of bickering was quite normal and expected between the childhood friends. “Or do you imagine that because I took my medicine and should be resting, I am unaware that you chose this evening to visit your favorite tavern?” She eyed him keenly, and then turned her attention back to Aka, a smile gracing the wan features that showed she was quite delicately pretty, in her own way, even if it was the strength of character that she more often showcased for others. “Of course. I have little enough to do in the evenings as it is. Especially while these raucous menfolk are out doing… whatever it is they do, when they get about the city, and frequent the taverns. I can hold my own with them - even Ryou, though he’d never admit it-” Her eyes went to the general then, grinning, “-but as with many other things, our beloved Emperor frets so. To hear him talk, I have a child’s capacity for liquor… but…” Like Ryou, her glance went briefly to Shian, but soon flitted away. “In any case, some evening, you would be most welcome. I have the best view of the sky in the palace, for my “genteel perusings”.” She giggled a bit.
For his part, Shian deliberately avoided the gaze of his friends, knowing too well the person of limited capacity to whom they were referring, and not desiring at this moment to discuss that at any length. Instead, he turned his focus to keeping hold of Akahana’s arm and allowing her to converse with the others as they moved toward the palace. Of course, the little gasp from Chisaka got his attention immediately as well. After all, in their little group of friends growing up, all of them had been inclined to look after the frailer child, and that was a habit that hadn’t faded as she’d grown into a frail bodied but strong minded young woman. Shun in particular had been quite prone to unnecessary worry about her condition, and had been one to visit her frequently, when she was confined to bed… and so it was no surprise that he caught her now, his attentiveness ensuring that she remained entirely uninjured.
For several long seconds, his arms around her waist and Aka’s hand beneath her arm were the only things keeping her upright, as she leaned her head back against Shun’s chest and breathed heavily, mostly from a bit of instinctive fear that the near fall had instilled in her. “I’m… fine, I-” Her voice was breathless, and she mumbled a curse beneath her breath as she straightened her staff, beginning to gather her legs beneath her once more. As she did so, she recovered some, and her words were steadier. “Those boots take too long to fasten, and I was in a hurry. And had I worn slippers, they’d have ruined in this mud. Now-” Another few deep breaths, and she seemed more herself, again, and offered a light joke to Aka. “Come along, we’d better get back, or he’ll insist on carrying me, again…” It didn’t take too long for them to get back into the palace and, as Shun settled her into a chair before one of the tables - which featured a scattering of papers and writing implements, with characters written in a flowing, feminine hand that showed the table was not typically used by Shun - she sighed quietly, and addressed Hina. “I suppose you’d better see that some of my tea is brought up, as well. To appease the worry gods.” Her sardonic gaze indicated the Emperor.

“You always complain that the medicine makes you sleepy. If you have already taken it, it would stand to reason that you should be resting.”
“With an Emperor who insists upon getting about the town in meager disguise and finding Mikos without me, how can one be expected to get any rest? Or do you imagine that because I took my medicine and should be resting, I am unaware that you chose this evening to visit your favorite tavern?”
Akahana heard the exchange between Shun and Chisaka and once she held her arm and Shun ensured to prevent her fall, once her feet were safely on the ground she gently released her arm, she had looked just as scared as Shun had and then something began to take form in Akahana’s mind. Now, she was no master craftswoman but she had been told Fumiko was a cartographer and what she had in mind would need a design, materials and testing before it could be put into fruition. After all, she did have some advantages of being a Miko from another world and that meant she could make use of whatever tools necessary to make the lives of her newly found friends much easier and enjoyable. They have gone out of their way to bring her to the Palace as an honourable guest, it was the least she could do for them, right? Furthermore, she had read all sorts of books, even manuals, so the knowledge to build what she had in mind was already in her mind, she just needed to ask Fumiko to draw the blueprints of the contraption, the materials and the shapes of all the bits and bobs needed and then she could start looking for similar sturdy and comfortable materials. She would probably speak to Shian and Ryou about it as she wanted it to be a surprise. She had never given anyone a fist before, or even a surprise, and she was already excited to get started on it.
“There will be plans made to make the journey as efficient and comfortable as possible. We will not be going all over the land on foot.”
“I dare say… The Emperor would carry you on his back before he allowed that to happen.”
Akahana could not stop herself from laughing silently at Ryou’s words, judging by how he would fret over Chisaka she could picture him carrying her just as Ryou teased, but she could also tell they had known each other for a very long time due to the way they conversed amongst themselves. This served as further encouragement for her to build the contraption she had already pictured in her mind. She would be unable to make anything as advanced as her world had to offer for they did not possess the technology in the Four Kingdoms, nevertheless she would definitely make something that will be most helpful for Chisaka.
Akahana was truly relieved to hear that most people in the Palace did not make use of formalities because that meant she would only need to learn the basics if she was ever included in anything official and that relieved her and her shoulders lost some of the tension. She smiled softly at his words and said, “I will be delighted to join you.”
“A weakness? I’d say it’s a strength. Knowledge is power, and the one who reads - and can understand and engage with the knowledge they gain - that one holds all the power in the world… Such a test would be unfair on one side or the other. I can tell you all of the mythology and history of our world, but I know nothing of yours. I believe it will make for very interesting conversations for some time to come.”
She smiled and then said, “I never allowed myself to see it as power, for power can blind those exposed to such an enriching experience. Even though, a person like you would see it as the greatest quality an Emperor can have for then he will hold the key to the prosperity of his nation, a person who has taken a different path, an Emperor with an agenda or one that has been led astray, with such knowledge, only destruction would ensue.” To his words about sharing all the knowledge both possessed on their own worlds she smirked, “That may be true, but so is this, albeit different worlds, there is knowledge that is universal to civilization itself. And that we both acquired, nonetheless, regarding the more specific knowledge resulting from the two worlds, I would be happy to exchange information and knowledge with you, I could even write some forms of Encyclopaedias-as are most common in my world-if that is your wish. Although it may take a while.”
“A farmer? That would never pass. Shun pretends to be the ill mannered son of a minor merchant… You can hold your drink, you say? What a refreshing idea. I know some who cannot, and it’s quite the shame…”
“If certain people could behave themselves and not bring up inappropriate conversation topics… Then it could be fun to take you with us some time. At minimum, you would get to see some local food and drink.”
Akahana laughed, “I find it harder to believe Shun-kun would attempt to impersonate a merchant as much as he would try a farmer, it must be quite a sight to behold.” She then heard their exchange and teased the Emperor further, “As much as you like to show some disapproval, you enjoy their company as much as you do the teasing, otherwise you would not spend time with your mischievous General and loyal entourage.” She then smirked, “You are quite fun to tease Shun-kun but you have to admit life is better with people you can be close enough to the point of mirth.” She had neer known such a life, but experiencing this gathering as she was, well she certainly found it enjoyable.
“Of course. I have little enough to do in the evenings as it is. Especially while these raucous menfolk are out doing… whatever it is they do, when they get about the city, and frequent the taverns. I can hold my own with them - even Ryou, though he’d never admit it-but as with many other things, our beloved Emperor frets so. To hear him talk, I have a child’s capacity for liquor… but… In any case, some evening, you would be most welcome. I have the best view of the sky in the palace, for my “genteel perusings”.
Akahana smiled back at Chisaka with just as much sweetness as she showed her and then said, “I’m already looking forward to it, I had neer had a chance to partake in such delight as the stars and astral bodies could be back in my world, but not this is something that can be easily corrected.” She noticed everyone turned to look at Shian when they spoke of people who could not hold their own regarding alcoholic beverages and then wondered how amusing it would be if they all went drinking and she learned if Shian was actually the fun kind of drunk or if he had a naughty side or a hyperactive one. She had seen many types of drunken people in her world.
“Tes, that is quite easy to arrange Once we get up there, Ryou can run down and have dinner brought up.”
“Have I been demoted from General to errand boy? I thought Shian usually did those things for you…”
“It’s simple… Shian has not gotten on my nerves this evening. It’s an Emperor’s prerogative to assign whomever they like to fetch and carry.”
Akahana’s eyes gleamed with mirth, it definitely looked like she was going to enjoy herself with these people. She already felt pain on her cheeks and abs from all that laughing, so she turned to look at Shian for a moment. Who would have thought she would connect so much with a person? She had neer tried before and yet, here she was now. She looked away feeling her cheeks warm.
“I’m… fine, I-”
That part Chisaka did not show often, it was endearing AKahana found and as she showed such fear of falling it strengthened Akahana’s resolve to work on something that will help her and hopefully it would also help other people like her with core mobility issues. She smiled warmly at Chisaka and gently patted her shoulder so she knew she and Shun would have her back if she ever slipped, she would not let her fall.
“Come along, we’d better get back, or he’ll insist on carrying me, again…”
Akahana smirked at Chisaka’s words and then said, “Certainly.” She walked alongside Chisaka and Shian, her hand still rested gently on his arm and she found his presence soothing. It was such a strange feeling, she had gone from depending solely on her own skills, to walking alongside a man she only just met and feeling safe. She almost felt herself lowering her guard. It surprised her, scared her and made her blush, was this how the helpless and the ladies felt in all those books she read whenever a reliable samurai came to their aid? She could tell she had walked her path alone for far too long, maybe it was time to allow herself to trust others. And maybe, confide in them if she could build such trust. She heard Shun’s exchange with a guard called Taiyo who mentioned his brother liked sweets. The idea of an apple tart sounded good about now. She nearly smirked at herself.
“Here, let me…”
Akahana laughed at Ryou and then said, “Your antiques would put the Flash back in my world to shame. He is supposed to be the fastest man on earth, albeit he does not exist, and you do…”
“Now, please make yourself at home here. You are to view my study - and my palace - as your own, Akahanna, and I do hope you will settle in here soon enough.”
“I suppose you’d better see that some of my tea is brought up, as well. To appease the worry gods.”
She smiled at Shun and said, “Thank you, I sure hope you won’t regret saying that when I start trashing your training grounds.” She was joking, well fifty percent of her was joking, the other half knew that she had received harsh training and as such she could be slightly… ruthless with training dummies. She smiled at Shian and said, “Thank you for the escort.” She felt her cheeks about to betray her and she moved to sit down in order to hide the embarrassment.

“With an Emperor who insists upon getting about the town in meager disguise and finding Mikos without me, how can one be expected to get any rest? Or do you imagine that because I took my medicine and should be resting, I am unaware that you chose this evening to visit your favorite tavern?”
Shun sighed. “Of course not, Chi-chan. I am well aware that you knew what my plans were as soon as dinner was over. After all, I did not come in to ensure you took your medicine.” This was clearly another topic that inspired light bickering. “I cannot very well relax in the palace when I have maids keeping count of the sake bottles and advisorts that frown and waggle their fingers at me. I am Emperor, but I am also a young man, and I enjo many of the same pursuits…I just do not get to enjoy them as often as others…” And this was the reason he never went out unless both Shian and Ryou could come. That way he would be well guarded, and his mother and the others would worry less.
“I will be delighted to join you.”
He smiled. “I’m glad to hear it. Chisaka and Fumiko often joke that I am rather dull conversation, since they already know all of my affairs, but you should liven things up tomorrow.” He smirked, looking across the two women to his best friend. “Maybe you can even get Shian to join in on the conversation, for once…”
“I never allowed myself to see it as power, for power can blind those exposed to such an enriching experience. Even though, a person like you would see it as the greatest quality an Emperor can have for then he will hold the key to the prosperity of his nation, a person who has taken a different path, an Emperor with an agenda or one that has been led astray, with such knowledge, only destruction would ensue. That may be true, but so is this, albeit different worlds, there is knowledge that is universal to civilization itself. And that we both acquired, nonetheless, regarding the more specific knowledge resulting from the two worlds, I would be happy to exchange information and knowledge with you, I could even write some forms of Encyclopaedias-as are most common in my world-if that is your wish. Although it may take a while.”
Shun shook his head. “Those who would use it to further an agenda are not capable of unlocking the true potential of knowledge. They seek a means to an end, and as such, consider themselves far too busy to seek the information for themselves. Instead, they assign someone else to do so, and are forced to rely on that person’s interpretation of what has been learned..“
“You have him talking about the power of knowledge…” Ryou observed. “I wonder how long before he mentions-”
“And that,” Shun continued/. “Is the main reason I would like to reform education in Kutou. It is something that is limited to the nobility, and usually to males, but I have been rallying support to open free public schools to educate the masses. My advisors think it is dangerous, but I think it’s a basic right that all of my people deserve.”
“Mind you, all among this party are in agreement on the matter.” Ryou spoke up. “Shun has insisted that all staff, no matter how low their birth, be given the opportunity to learn to read and write and has invited them to use the Imperial Library as they see fit. He also did a very controversial thing by continuing the education of his sisters, and allowing my little Kaouru to be educated by royal tutors. As they are girls, it was thought that it would be necessary to fulfill their roles within theKingdom.
“Hogwash.” Shun scoffed.
“As much as you like to show some disapproval, you enjoy their company as much as you do the teasing, otherwise you would not spend time with your mischievous General and loyal entourage. You are quite fun to tease Shun-kun but you have to admit life is better with people you can be close enough to the point of mirth.”
He smiled. “So you do not think an Emperor is supposed to be dour and solemn at all times?” A laugh. “What a relief. No, I agree with you. I am thrice blessed that Seriyuu and one foolish ambassador each saw fit to place three people in my path who have been my lifelong best friends. You can imagine the trouble we got into as children…” He glanced down at Chisaka. “Some of us were more trouble than others, but we all had our share, and we have always been there for one another.”
“I’m… fine, I-”
Shun closed his eyes and let out a breath when her head leaned back against him,and he made sure she had her footing. He was tempted to belabor the point about footwear, but it seemed the slip had scared her enough, and there was no point in being a complete fuss. She hadn’t actually fallen, after all. “Come on, Chisaka, I’ve got you… We’re almost there, at any rate.” Likewise he did not see the need to point out that he had only carried her once or twice, not nearly as often as her words implied.
“Your antiques would put the Flash back in my world to shame. He is supposed to be the fastest man on earth, albeit he does not exist, and you do…”
Ryou laughed heartily as he got the lamps and the fireplace going, and even had time to pause and pull a chair out for Akahanna. “Ah, he may be fast, but I doubt he is half as handsome as I.”
“Though there is a slight chance he could be just a bit more modest than our General…” Shun added as he cleared some room on the tables for tea and supper.
“Modesty would be wasted on me. O have never had it, and Hisoka would probably think I was ill if I came down with it now…”
“I suppose you’d better see that some of my tea is brought up, as well. To appease the worry gods.”
“Thank you, I sure hope you won’t regret saying that when I start trashing your training grounds.”
Shun smiled at Chisaka. “Thank you. I believe I still have some of your chocolate in my desk…” He moved to retrieve the sweet treat and then get Chisaka properly settled. As he did, he answered Aka. “My training grounds have had to serve many men, including Ryou who - in addition to his superhuman speed - also has the Seishi ability of superhuman strength. I’ve personally witnessed him reduce a tree trunk to splinters with a single well placed punch.” He chuckled. “And it served him right when all the tree branches fell down on his head…” He moved to get something from one of his shelves, and moved to unroll a parchment in front of Aka. “Here is a map of all of the known lands of this world. I thought you might enjoy looking over it while we wait for tea and dinner…” That done, he settled in a seat next to Chisaka, Taking her staff and leaning it within reach but out of her way in a nearby corner.
It was a relatively quick affair after that for food to be brought in - snacks for most, but a full meal for Aka - and tea to be served. Shun poured Chisaka’s tea, adding some sugar for her, then helped himself to some green tea before settling to continue their conversation.

A mumble was accompanied by an elbow to Shun’s ribs, though more subdued this time, both because she was wary of another fall, and because she was grateful that he’d been there to catch her. “You’re just worried that we ladies can drink you men under the table… right, Aka-chan?” She giggles a bit. “And that Fumiko and I will edit all of his stories with a few facts...” Even Shian had to chuckle there, well accustomed to Chisaka’s sense of humor, but he did add in a quiet two cents of his own. “There are some stories I know of - ones of which I am certain the womenfolk do not have all the details. However, that is largely because they involve Ryou, and are generally not fit for mixed company…”
As the topic shifted to reading - and therefore, to education - both soldier and advisor nodded, well aware of their friend’s passion on this subject. “As it is, it is only due to my health that I was educated at all,” Chisaka admitted. “It was essentially decided that I’d be little use for most functions of keeping house and the like that women are typically expected to do with their lives, and thus I must be educated in order to have some use in life, and some way to support myself.” Beneath his breath, Shian mumbled, “And all of us have had cause to regret the power of her intellect…” She flicked a non-serious glare at him, and he chuckled. “And her keen hearing. As for myself… it was simpler to educate me alongside Shun rather than find something else for me to do whilst he was at his lessons… and at any rate, his mother insisted that he ought to have company as intelligent and educated as he was. Sadly, I was all that could be found, so…” He gave Akahana a tiny edge of a grin, showing the joke.
This kind of conversation only made their long-standing friendship more obvious, and gave their visitor a very clear glimpse of how close they were. She had already noticed how much all of them tended to see about Chisaka, and ensure that all of her needs were attended to… and yet, they were without pity for her condition, merely viewing it as a part of their beloved friend that happened to come alongside the sharp wit for which she was so famous. Indeed, as she settled with her tea, she displayed it capably. “Yes, Ryou here has all the brawn, and I the brains… which left Shian here with the sword skills, and our beloved Emperor with the sparkly crown and poor disguise skills…” For his part, after seeing Akahana to a seat and requesting that the maid send up a second, fresh pot of tea shortly, due to the number of people who had just come in out of the chill evening, Shian fetched a small blanket from a cupboard, where it was always kept, and in the midst of carrying this to Shun in order to drape around Chisaka, he chuckled. “Nonsense. I have the distinguished title of royal bodyguard and blanket fetcher. The excess of honor to my name is really quite shameful to our ambassador… not that I think he’d recognize me, if I ran him down in the street.”

“You’re just worried that we ladies can drink you men under the table… right, Aka-chan? And that Fumiko and I will edit all of his stories with a few facts… There are some stories I know of - ones of which I am certain the womenfolk do not have all the details. However, that is largely because they involve Ryou, and are generally not fit for mixed company…”
Akahana did not cease to be impressed by the lady next to her, if she already liked her now she absolutely did. She laughed wholeheartedly at the way Chisaka elbowed Shun and spoke and with pride she nodded, “I would gladly put that to the test and show off my high tolerance to alcohol.” Once she had tried to drink to the point where her life would end and she realised that her tolerance was ridiculous, of course she would not share that with them. But yes, she had hated her life back then. She turned to look at Chisaka with full interest, “Then perhaps we could discuss such stories during our stargazing sessions?-As then these stories would be missing any facts you both know of-” She grinned looking at Ryou, for a General he was certainly not what she had expected. She could not stop herself from teasing him as he seemed avid at playing with everyone else’s feelings on their own affairs but she could tell that he was a rather interesting person, like everyone else in this room. “Chi-chan, I have to say I would gladly partake in any hobby you like in order to get to know you better, I feel we should be the best of friends quite soon.” She smiled warmly at the woman, “I could even get some cocoa beans and start making chocolate for you, if you do not have it already I’m sure I could find a similar plant as it is a delicacy in my world.”
“I’m glad to hear it. Chisaka and Fumiko often joke that I am rather dull conversation, since they already know all of my affairs, but you should liven things up tomorrow… Maybe you can even get Shian to join in on the conversation, for once…”
It really wasn’t every day that Akahana was invited to join in merry conversation, intellectual discussions or any friendly affairs. Not only that but she seldom spoke of her life, her pursuits and passions. Well, she seldom talked, period. That was what she had always been told, to never engage in conversation and never connect with others. And part of her agreed to follow such a command because of how much she had suffered as a child, one betrayal after another, starting with her father. But something about the people sitting next to her, something about the land and its weather, there was definitely something about all of this that inspired her to open up, at least with regard to the things she was passionate about, for which they seemed to share affinity to. She felt free from the shackles of her life and as if she could be more like the person she felt she should be, but was she being too hasty and accepting to become the Miko for a Kingdom she did not know and stand next to people who had welcomed her for now? What would happen once they found out about her past? Would do they smile at her and welcome her to dine at their table then? It was a great risk, but for now, she would learn the kind of people they were and perhaps she could find atonement in helping them and their kingdom, and then somehow find a life she could happily live. For now, she would get as much information as possible on the Kingdom and its people and a means for her to stay. She felt her cheeks warm slightly at the mention of her presence being an incentive to have Shian participate in the conversation and then she said as if to distract herself, “Perhaps you are not being creative enough Shun-kun in the way you address your affairs amongst friends, perhaps you need some inspiration.” She smirked.
“Those who would use it to further an agenda are not capable of unlocking the true potential of knowledge. They seek a means to an end, and as such, consider themselves far too busy to seek the information for themselves. Instead, they assign someone else to do so, and are forced to rely on that person’s interpretation of what has been learned…“
Akahana smiled at Shun and then said, “I share the same passion as you for knowledge, but I have seen first hand what it does to arrogant people who seek it to control rather than to use such knowledge for the well-being of everyone. And as such, I promised myself I would treat it with respect, not for the power it grants.” And she would never break that promise.
“You have him talking about the power of knowledge… I wonder how long before he mentions-”
“And that... Is the main reason I would like to reform education in Kutou. It is something that is limited to the nobility, and usually to males, but I have been rallying support to open free public schools to educate the masses. My advisors think it is dangerous, but I think it’s a basic right that all of my people deserve.”
“Mind you, all among this party are in agreement on the matter… Shun has insisted that all staff, no matter how low their birth, be given the opportunity to learn to read and write and has invited them to use the Imperial Library as they see fit. He also did a very controversial thing by continuing the education of his sisters, and allowing my little Kaouru to be educated by royal tutors. As they are girls, it was thought that it would be necessary to fulfill their roles within the Kingdom.
“Hogwash.”
“As it is, it is only due to my health that I was educated at all… It was essentially decided that I’d be little use for most functions of keeping house and the like that women are typically expected to do with their lives, and thus I must be educated in order to have some use in life, and some way to support myself.”
“And all of us have had cause to regret the power of her intellect… And her keen hearing. As for myself… it was simpler to educate me alongside Shun rather than find something else for me to do whilst he was at his lessons… and at any rate, his mother insisted that he ought to have company as intelligent and educated as he was. Sadly, I was all that could be found, so…”
She laughed at their antiques and the whole conversation not because she found the topic hilarious but rather the way they spoke of themselves. When Shian grinned at her, she grinned back. They were all truly remarkable people, weren’t they? But it all made her blush, she had never been given the chance of an education the way they all spoke, she blushed lightly as a maid arrived with the tea and food that was requested and as it was placed in front of her she began to dig in. Everyone had shared their own stories and she felt as if she had to follow suit. Once the maid left, finally she confessed, “Albeit, there are education systems for everyone in my world, I was unlucky enough to neer receive any.” She dared not look into their eyes as she admitted, “I taught myself -for the most part-to read, although I did receive some form of tuition to write. Once I achieved that, then I taught myself how to count, mathematics, and philosophy, among others. I tried to get as much knowledge as possible about all sorts of topics because I knew I would not receive the education of any other child my age.” She then finally lifted her eyes to meet Shian’s and then those of the rest in the group as she admitted, “Thus, perhaps my level of education is not ideal and that is why I keep reading. But it has made me a bit of a polymath and I greatly admired all the historic personalities who were of the sort from my world.” And it was true that although Zuku never allowed her to have a normal life like most children, he still enabled her to learn on her own but she studied long enough to become a proficient learner and avid reader.
“So you do not think an Emperor is supposed to be dour and solemn at all times? What a relief. No, I agree with you. I am thrice blessed that Seriyuu and one foolish ambassador each saw fit to place three people in my path who have been my lifelong best friends. You can imagine the trouble we got into as children… Some of us were more trouble than others, but we all had our share, and we have always been there for one another.”
Akahana smirked and rolled her eyes playfully, “Oh please, If I wanted to be in the company of dull and selfish politicians to bore me to death I would have stayed in my world. What use is being a master in all the intricacies of courtly politeness if you do not actually do your job as a sovereign and your people pay the price?” She continued to eat her food before she smiled, “And I am just as grateful for that happiness in your life.” She herself could not imagine what he described of them having fun as children, because she did not know what that was like, and so, she decided to ignore that part of herself and then inquire after it, just so she could imagine what others experienced with a happy childhood, “Do pray tell, what kind of mischief would you engage in?”
“Yes, Ryou here has all the brawn, and I the brains… which left Shian here with the sword skills, and our beloved Emperor with the sparkly crown and poor disguise skills… Nonsense. I have the distinguished title of royal bodyguard and blanket fetcher. The excess of honor to my name is really quite shameful to our ambassador… not that I think he’d recognize me, if I ran him down in the street.”
Akahana could not imagine any of it but it made sense due to what she had already seen for herself and she could not stop herself from laughing with all her heart being grateful that she had swallowed the tea before Chisaka and Shian had contributed to the little story of their childhoods. There was longing in her eyes to have been given the same chance to experience such a life but she would make sure that no child that she knew of would have an unhappy life if she could help it. Especially now that she was away from the clutches of Zuku.
“Ah, he may be fast, but I doubt he is half as handsome as I.”
“Though there is a slight chance he could be just a bit more modest than our General…”
“Modesty would be wasted on me. O have never had it, and Hisoka would probably think I was ill if I came down with it now…”
Akahana smirked at the General and said as if to tease him, “I would not know, he is a fictional character, you are not my type though.” It was more of an anti-tease to his pride but she was comfortable enough with the group in order to tease them at times. She continued with her meal for a moment, “It is different from the food I’m used to, but not in a bad way, I find I really like it.” She smiled warmly, was this what proper homemade food tasted like? It nearly brought a tear in her eyes for that was one of the few memories she had of her mother, helping her make super. She was truly touched. And she did not know where this feeling of crying came from, it was so strange.
“My training grounds have had to serve many men, including Ryou who - in addition to his superhuman speed - also has the Seishi ability of superhuman strength. I’ve personally witnessed him reduce a tree trunk to splinters with a single well placed punch… And it served him right when all the tree branches fell down on his head… Here is a map of all of the known lands of this world. I thought you might enjoy looking over it while we wait for tea and dinner…”
Akahana could not stop herself from laughing but she wiggled her finger before she continued eating, “Don’t say I did not warn you.” After all, she had received harsh training and her practice sessions required the sturdiest materials. Although, she doubted they had anything of a similar material in the Palace. She then took the map and examined it carefully, she had finished her food by then and the tea as well. As she looked at it she could not stop herself from standing up and leaning on the table, “When was this map crafted? You might be surprised but I'm astonished. Maps like these… I would not be allowed to handle a map like this one back in my world.” She was both in deep awe and shock, she was truly lucky to have been summoned by the book.

“I could even get some cocoa beans and start making chocolate for you, if you do not have it already I’m sure I could find a similar plant as it is a delicacy in my world.”
Shun laughed heartily at this. “You will make yourself invaluable to us, Aka-chan. Chisaka rather loves chocolate, but as I do not yet have someone on staff who specializes in the creation of it, I have had to have it specially shipped in from a small kingdom called Zenchi.” He glanced at Chisaka with a small smile, silently indicating he did not mind the extra effort in the slightest. “But promising her a bit of chocolate is the only way I can get her to take her medicine, normally…”
“He’s already been asking the healer if there was any way to make a paste of the medicine so that it could be served with the chocolate to cover the bitter taste…” Ryou commented, and Shun blushed just a bit. That had been intended to be a surprise for his childhood friend…as soon as they had worked out how to do it. Not that it was easy to surprise Chisaka. If she thought he was keeping something important from her, she would just poke around in his head to find it out for herself. He shook his head, dismissing the thought and looked back to Akahana as she spoke again.
”Perhaps you are not being creative enough Shun-kun in the way you address your affairs amongst friends, perhaps you need some inspiration.”
The Emperor smiled. “It is hard to be creative when addressing my affairs when all of my friends, by the nature of their occupations, are practically as well acquainted with my affairs as I am. You will certainly be a welcome addition, Aka-chan, as I will finally be able to speak with someone who cannot quote my opinion nearly word for word.”
“Nearly?” Ryou repeated. “Give us some credit, my friend, we have spent enough time with you to know exactly what you will say during a meeting when certain subjects are brought up. For instance, anytime your older advisors bring up having heirs…” He cleared his throat and waited a moment before continuing. “I apologize, but that is not a matter that currently concerns me. I have no intention of dying imminently, so I would rather focus on tending to the needs of my people, and sort the rest out when Seriyuu sees fit.” Shun shot him another look, and he grinned.
“As it is, it is only due to my health that I was educated at all… It was essentially decided that I’d be of little use for most functions of keeping house and the like that women are typically expected to do with their lives, and thus I must be educated in order to have some use in life, and some way to support myself.”
“And all of us have had cause to regret the power of her intellect… And her keen hearing. “Albeit, there are education systems for everyone in my world, I was unlucky enough to neer receive any. I taught myself -for the most part-to read, although I did receive some form of tuition to write. Once I achieved that, then I taught myself how to count, mathematics, and philosophy, among others. I tried to get as much knowledge as possible about all sorts of topics because I knew I would not receive the education of any other child my age. Thus, perhaps my level of education is not ideal and that is why I keep reading. But it has made me a bit of a polymath and I greatly admired all the historic personalities who were of the sort from my world.”
Shun shook his head. “Your intellect would have been wasted as the wife of someone who expected the usual duties of home and family. I am very grateful that I was able to steal you away from such a fate, and I now have one of the wisest advisors in all of the lands.” There was a fond note in his eyes as he said this, but then he looked at Shian. “I am sure there were times my tutors resented the fact that I was able to bring my best friend to lessons with me, especially that time we snuck the frog into our history lessons…” At last, he turned to look at Akahana. She seemed just a bit embarrassed about admitting she had no formal education, and he wondered what circumstances - if education was readily available - had led to her being unable to take part in it.Still, he did not comment on that . Instead he simply said. “I believe that something that is worked hard for, and fought for along the way, is far more valuable than anything that can be freely gifted. Perhaps those of us who were freely granted an education could learn much from one like you, Aka-chan, who showed the determination and strength of character to fight for one when it was denied to you.” He gave her a sincere smile. “I feel very honored that you are our Miko - assuming, of course that you will accept the role - and I cannot wait to show you the appreciation we all feel for you.”
When she asked what sorts of things they had gotten into as children, he shook his head. “You’ll have to allow us to share that over tea tomorrow morning. Then I can bring some of the artifacts that figure into the most humorous of the stories…”
“When was this map crafted? You might be surprised but I'm astonished. Maps like these… I would not be allowed to handle a map like this one back in my world.”
Shun smiled at her. “Maps are but bits of paper. It is people that concern me more, and if it will help answer any questions, it is only fair to have it where you may view it more easily.” He looked to his best friend. “Shian? Fetch that lamp by my desk and bring it closer so she can see more easily…” He looked back at Akahana. “That map was crafted by the court cartographer… let’s see, it was during my grandfather’s reign, so I’d say about sixty years ago. Fumiko is working on making an updated map, as she has learned of a few small islands that are not pictured there…” He sipped his tea for a moment, picking up one of the sweet snacks that had been served with the tea and taking a bite. “It is mostly accurate, and it does enough to serve my purposes, but I wanted a new map done before I had to plan our trip to…” He laughed. “Well, to find our Miko and the other Seishi. I suppose I can scratch one of those tasks off my list.”
“Speaking of…” Ryou said as he leaned forward in his seat. “We did promise to educate Aka-chan on the task as a Miko, and what it would entail.” HE looked to Akahana. “Would you rather we all start throwing information at you, or would you prefer to simply start asking questions?"
Shun stood. “I do believe that I have a book that should answer many of her questions. If you would prefer, Aka-chan, I can locate it and let you read over it.” He smiled. “You can, of course, approach us with questions as you read, and they come to your mind.”

From the safety of his distance across the study, Shian snorted a little at Akahana’s comment to their frail friend. “I’d be careful, if I were you… being the friend of our Chisaka can be quite dangerous to the health.” He turns to offer the Emperor a sly smile. “Especially to the skull, eh, Shun?” The small woman gave him a look from across the room. “You know that I could knock you out from here... I don’t have to be in staff range.” He answered patiently and with a hint of humor - though it might be noted that he drew no closer. “After your activities this evening, you’d knock both of us out, and not only would Shun fret, but we’d have to cancel the meeting tomorrow… which I know you don’t want.” He taps his knuckles against the side of his head indicatively. “I am quite fond of the shape my head is in, thank you.”
Chisaka scoffed quietly, but did sip her tea, mostly to please her fearful friend. Still, she chuckled at Ryou’s imitation. “I’m almost certain that is exactly what you said the last time Deng questioned you on the matter… nearly word for word…” Even Shian had to laugh, and he shook his head a little. “Who’s going to bring the artifacts?” He turns his gaze to Aka by way of explanation. “I’ve had most of them for years… most of the older advisors think it undignified for the Emperor to keep certain items in his personal quarters.” His glance went back to Shun. “Though I do believe you still have our Japanese tutor’s hairpiece…?" Chisaka cleared her throat then, subtly, as the topic shifted more toward the importance of the Miko. "I certainly have several books on the matter - reading is another of those activities that I am permitted to pursue, by Imperial order... and so I've done a fair bit of research on it. Actually... much of it parallels with our star systems, and their rotation." A little smile, as she figured that would fascinate Aka, since she seemed so hungry for knowledge.

“You will make yourself invaluable to us, Aka-chan. Chisaka rather loves chocolate, but as I do not yet have someone on staff who specializes in the creation of it, I have had to have it specially shipped in from a small kingdom called Zenchi. But promising her a bit of chocolate is the only way I can get her to take her medicine, normally…”
Akahana felt her cheeks blush lightly, she would never consider herself invaluable to anyone, least of all in her previous life back in Tokyo but she did have this love for baking and reading that helped her whenever she needed to clear her head or do something unrelated to using her weapons. It was true that, for the most part, training and going for jogs were indispensable activities for her, yet, she needed something she could do that had nothing to do with her usual activities. And once she realised she had a sweet tooth and enjoyed baking, there was her answer. And so she tried many recipes until she mastered them and she could remember most recipes, and in that loe for baking came the passion for growing some of the ingredients herself. She decided she would try and get a notebook of sorts in order to write down all the recipes she could remember and would see about making them here in Kutou, she might have to replace some of the ingredients and adapt the recipes but that would not be a problem and experimenting with ingredients she did not know would be entertaining. Realising she was probably looking silly thinking about baking and blushing she then said, “If you can prosure some seeds and cocoa beans I can look at the fields you use to harvest and recreate the ideal conditions for its growth. It would not be a problem. I enjoy doing things like that.” Especially now that she knew that Chisaka liked chocolate, it would be a fun challenge to try and grow it here in Kutou. Although, at the mention of Zenchi she grew curious, she had never travelled on holiday in her world and wondered if they would be granted the chance to do so here in the Four Kingdoms. “What is Zenchi like, if you don’t mind me asking?”
“He’s already been asking the healer if there was any way to make a paste of the medicine so that it could be served with the chocolate to cover the bitter taste…”
Akahana noticed the blush and could not help herself from smiling, she had noticed a certain tension within the young Emperor and she now seemed to guess why that was. She thought about what they had mentioned and then said, “What are the ingredients of the medicine? There is a chance a powder could be concocted for the tea and depending o the ingredients, honey and dark cocoa could be added, I could improvise a tea hilter and even make a sort of chocolate tea bag that could be added onto the medicine even.” She wanted to help them as much as they were helping her already and something about the way they behaved made her want to be a part of this, to feel as if she had a real family. After all, with her father abandoning her and her mother and, well, her mother dying when she was five she was denied the joy of having a family and Zuku was never an option. There simply was no human bone in his body; he was power-hungry and obsessed with the control it granted him and he only saw others as a means to an end.
“I’d be careful, if I were you… being the friend of our Chisaka can be quite dangerous to the health… Especially to the skull, eh, Shun?”
“You know that I could knock you out from here... I don’t have to be in staff range.”
“After your activities this evening, you’d knock bothof us out, and not only would Shun fret, but we’d have to cancel the meeting tomorrow… which I know you don’t want… I am quite fond of the shape my head is in, thank you.”
Akahana watched their exchange for a moment although she chuckled silently, this was what it was like to have long-lasting friends. It looked like someone absolutely enjoyable and then she gave Shian a teasing smile, “I shall take my chances, after all, what is friendship if I’m not willing to fight to preserve it? And I would be daft if I wasted this chance and did not show gratitude for the friendship you have all offered upon my arrival. Staff or not, we will cross that bridge if we get there.” She then smiled at Chisaka. Truth be told she was eager to experience this friendship with Chisaka, with everyone in the room.
“Nearly? Give us some credit, my friend, we have spent enough time with you to know exactly what you will say during a meeting when certain subjects are brought up. For instance, anytime your older advisors bring up having heirs… I apologize, but that is not a matter that currently concerns me. I have no intention of dying imminently, so I would rather focus on tending to the needs of my people, and sort the rest out when Seriyuu sees fit.”
“I’m almost certain that is exactly what you said the last time Deng questioned you on the matter… nearly word for word…”
Akahana laughed wholeheartedly although she did notice that everyone was now addressing her as informally as they did amongst themselves and they were all childhood friends. It made her chest feel warm and she smiled fondly, they had openly welcomed her into their lives, this strengthened her resolve to do everything at hand to make Kutou a better place and protect this her new home. She looked at Shun for a moment and said, “Would it be possible to have a word with you tomorrow morning before the meeting? I have something I would like to discuss with you first.” She wanted to know what his thoughts would be on her training spies for the kingdom, helping with tending to wounds and the like and, finally, she wanted him, Ryou and Shian to help her device a mechanism to make Chisaka’s life much easier and ease Shun’s concerns if a little. As soon as she reached her room she would draw the plans for the mechanism before she went to sleep. “Also, would it be possible to procure a notebook and some parchments and ink before you all turn for the night?” She hoped she did not sound too demanding for asking for such things so late at night.
“I believe that something that is worked hard for, and fought for along the way, is far more valuable than anything that can be freely gifted. Perhaps those of us who were freely granted an education could learn much from one like you, Aka-chan, who showed the determination and strength of character to fight for one when it was denied to you… I feel very honored that you are our Miko - assuming, of course that you will accept the role - and I cannot wait to show you the appreciation we all feel for you.”
Akahana blushed deeply at his compliment, she did not believe herself worthy of such words and, on hindsight, back when she was young she deemed it her only chance at crafting a future for herself, of course she did not know the kind of man Zuku was back then and, she soon learned there was no escaping him for many tried and paid such “insolence” with their lives. And even if they did manage to escape he would hunt them down and send assassins until they lost everything they loved or perished in the fight to survive. She looked down for a moment before she said, “Really, I’m nothing special.” But still she smiled at the Emperor and said, “Of course I accept the role, you probably have no idea what you and your country have done for me, I am greatly indebted to you and will do everything I can, no matter the price, to protect the Kutou Empire.” And she meant every word fully aware of the kind of promise she was making. If she had to lay down her life she would do so gladly protecting something precious to her rather than go back to that life she hated.
“You’ll have to allow us to share that over tea tomorrow morning. Then I can bring some of the artifacts that figure into the most humorous of the stories…”
“Who’s going to bring the artifacts? I’ve had most of them for years… most of the older advisors think it undignified for the Emperor to keep certain items in his personal quarters… Though I do believe you still have our Japanese tutor’s hairpiece…?"
Akahana smiled both at Shun and Shian and said, “That will be something to look forward to tomorrow morning.”
“Maps are but bits of paper. It is people that concern me more, and if it will help answer any questions, it is only fair to have it where you may view it more easily… That map was crafted by the court cartographer… let’s see, it was during my grandfather’s reign, so I’d say about sixty years ago. I suppose I can scratch one of those tasks off my list.”
Akahana smirked at his comments, “You cannot compare people and things, obviously people are far more important but you fail to see something that Fumiko would agree with me here. Maps, books, deeds-tangible or not-are the legacy of the makers, the persons who discover such things or whose thought has brought them into that branch of knowledge that has not been studied before. It is their gift to the people, without them we would not evolve with such fluidity. Take a map, for example, while it is a means to reach a location it also grants great knowledge on the location, the geography, natural resources and people for it marks where you are likely to find people, without maps battle strategies would have been harder, travelling would be full of unplanned incidents and people would most likely get lost. It has taken people to think of all this and spend a long time travelling in order for us to hold this “piece of parchment” tonight and examine the lands of the Four Kingdoms. And that could be another reason Fumiko is updating the map with her newest discoveries. And, if it is not too bold of me to ask, I would like to have a look at it once it is completed.” She blushed lightly at her passion for such topics and then looked down at the map, she hoped she had not spoken out of turn. To his words about finding the Miko and Seishi she smiled, “I’m glad I arrived right on time to join you on such a trip. I confess I have never travelled at leisure before.”
“Speaking of… We did promise to educate Aka-chan on the task as a Miko, and what it would entail… Would you rather we all start throwing information at you, or would you prefer to simply start asking questions?"
“I do believe that I have a book that should answer many of her questions. If you would prefer, Aka-chan, I can locate it and let you read over it… You can, of course, approach us with questions as you read, and they come to your mind.”

She smiled at Ryou, Shun and Chisaka and said, “I will gladly take the books you will lend me and write down my own notes and questions, if that is okay.” At the mention of the star system she gave Chisaka a smile, yes, she would enjoy learning all about this world as thoroughly as possible. However, she did not wish to prevent them from carrying out their own duties by taking too much of their time and so she thought that reading books would be much helpful on the matter. That way she would have some knowledge on the matter and would have some knowledge when they discuss her questions.

“If you can prosure some seeds and cocoa beans I can look at the fields you use to harvest and recreate the ideal conditions for its growth. It would not be a problem. I enjoy doing things like that. What is Zenchi like, if you don’t mind me asking?”
Shun smiled. Thir Miko really was unlike anyone he had ever met before. She was so strong, and yet so intelligent and helpful. He silently thanked Seriyuu once again for bringing Akahana into their lives. He nodded and smiled. “I’ll have them ordered in the morning. Thank you, Aka-chan.” He stood and crossed to one of the many bookcases, skimming for a specific book. As he did this, he continued speaking. “Zenshi is a mostly mountainous land with water on three sides, and a border with Konan - just south of here - on the fourth. You should be able to spot it there on the map. I believe it has a small gemstone symbol to mark the capital. The nation is rich in many natural minerals, and has made quite the name for itself, despite being so small.” Finding what he was looking for, he pulled two books from the shelf and turned to place them on the table in front of Akahana. One was a collection of lore concerning the Seriyuu no Miko and her Seishi - part historical record, and part oral tradition - and the other was a brief account of the Four Kingdoms, as well as most - if not all - of the smaller nations. Next, he moved to his desk and sat down, rummaging through drawers until he took out a blank leather bound journal, a new set of quills and a few ink pots. He added some scrolls of longer blank paper - incase she had need of it. Next came some more rummaging until he found a leather satchel under the desk. He put the journal, ink and quills into the bag, and carried them to sit next to Akahana as well. “There. You may write down any questions that come to you, or make any other notes you wish. If you need more ink, or more than one journal, please let me know. And if you would prefer a brush to a quill, I can have a set brought to you in the morning. Many of my older advisors still prefer to write with brushes, but I find these quills to be far more accurate and less messy.”
“What are the ingredients of the medicine? There is a chance a powder could be concocted for the tea and depending o the ingredients, honey and dark cocoa could be added, I could improvise a tea hilter and even make a sort of chocolate tea bag that could be added onto the medicine even.”
Shun shook his head. “I confess, I do not know all of the ingredients. I never had the attention span for learning to mix such things. I generally just trust Dr. Gensai, and the healing knowledge of a contact of Kenji-san - A Suzaku Seishi with an extensive knowledge of healing by the name of Haruyoshi. I have never yet met him, but I have invited him time and again to come take up a position as Gensai’s apprentice.”
“I’d be careful, if I were you… being the friend of our Chisaka can be quite dangerous to the health… Especially to the skull, eh, Shun?”
“You know that I could knock you out from here... I don’t have to be in staff range.”
“After your activities this evening, you’d knock both of us out, and not only would Shun fret, but we’d have to cancel the meeting tomorrow… which I know you don’t want… I am quite fond of the shape my head is in, thank you.”

Shun laughed as he listened to his friends. He settled back in his chair next to Chisaka, and then addressed the room at large. “I have come to believe that it is the privale of a friend to smack you when you are being stupid, and to help you up after you have fallen down… once that friend is finished laughting at you, of course.”
Ryou smirked. “Funny, you never laugh at Chi-chan, when she falls down…”
Shun cleared his throat, darting a glance at Chisaka. “That is different. I owe her my life - a debt that I will never be able to repay.” He recovered the more jovial mood with a tease. “All I owe the two of you are several headaches and a few interestingly shaped scars…”
“At least one of which…” Ryou chuckled. “Is not fit for mixed company. Which reminds me, it has been far too long since we all vacationed at those springs…”
“Would it be possible to have a word with you tomorrow morning before the meeting? I have something I would like to discuss with you first.”
Shun ignored his friends' teasing on the topic of his feelings about finding heirs, but smiled at Akahana’s question. “But of course. I believe the meeting is scheduled for just after breakfast, but if you would like, I can have Hina-san come get you with enough time to join me in my study for breakfast. We could talk then.” He was curious what she could want to discuss already, but he decided that matter could wait until the morning.
“Really, I’m nothing special. Of course I accept the role, you probably have no idea what you and your country have done for me, I am greatly indebted to you and will do everything I can, no matter the price, to protect the Kutou Empire.”
Ryou shook his head, but was smiling. “Nothing special? My dear Akahana, you are perhaps the single most important woman in all of Kutou, for accepting the role for Seriyuu no Miko. Legend says that when our nation is in great need, the Seriyuu no Miko will come from another world to help save us. While I suspect I know at least part of the great need we are under…” He exchanged a glance with the others - tensions had been slowly rising with Sailo for some time - he then looked back at Akahana. “I suspect that there is more going on. I’ve heard that ll for Miko have been summoned here, and that is as of yet unheard of.”
Shun sighed, and ran a hand back through his hair. “That is also something we can discuss in the morning, when we’ve all had plenty of rest.” He looked to Akahana. “Please look over the information, and let us answer any questions before you officially accept. I do not want to drag you into danger without letting you fully grasp all that we know.”
”You cannot compare people and things, obviously people are far more important but you fail to see something that Fumiko would agree with me here. Maps, books, deeds-tangible or not-are the legacy of the makers, the persons who discover such things or whose thought has brought them into that branch of knowledge that has not been studied before. I’m glad I arrived right on time to join you on such a trip. I confess I have never travelled at leisure before.”
Ryou chuckled again. “He speaks dismissively of the maps, but he’s quite protective of them, especially the ones Fumiko makes.”
“There is a difference…” Shun countered. “Between being protective, and not wanting a certain general to tear them up. Kaoru-chan can treat them more delicately than her father, and she is only three years of age.”
“Honestly, rip one map when you’re thirteen…” Ryou shook his head.
Shun waved him off and turned back to the larger conversation. “Those two books I gave you should be a start to answering our questions, but do not feel that I gave them to you so you would not bother us. I believe I speak for everyone here when I say you and your questions are top priority. You are doing my Empire a great service - as I have said already - so I would never dream of making you feel like you are a burden or annoyance.” He smiled. “Besides which, I am quite looking forward to talking with you for some time to come.” He glanced over at Chisaka and noticed her tea was nearly gone. “I wonder if we should retire for the evening, and we can get together in the morning to continue this discussion. I believe-” He hesitated talking, and his eyes became unfocused for a moment, gaining a slight shimmer that could be a trick of the candlelight. Green eyes came back into focus, and he looked more sure of what he was about to say. “Yes, my mother has had some things you might require in your new room, and I believe she has ordered a hot bath to be brought up. She has a knack for such things, as you will learn with time.” His very brief vision indicated that most of the things she should need to get settled for bed, and to make herself ready for the next day were already waiting in her room, and several other things were ordered to come in over the next couple of days. He looked to Shian. “It is the room that Hiden-san stays in, when he accompanies Yori-chan from Hokkan, when she visits my sisters. Perhaps you could show her to her room?”

“I shall take my chances, after all, what is friendship if I’m not willing to fight to preserve it?”
Keen blue-green eyes sharpened with intelligence, defying the fatigue and weakness that tried to creep in, after her insistence on journeying to the Miko, this evening. “Right, Shun… it’s official. I like her.” Aka was favored with a little grin, even as she finished the last of her tea and rested back. A hand passed subtly over her eyes, and in silent recognition of that, Shian met gazes with Shun meaningfully. “I’m afraid the gifting of scars and headaches may have to wait until tomorrow, my friends. I should see our Miko to her room and ensure she is settled before my evening rounds with the guards… and perhaps start a rumor or two about the “detainment” of a well-armed stranger in town that trounced several men of ill-repute. Probably an infiltrator, testing our defenses.” He smirked a bit. “... just until we are prepared for the general populace to be made aware that our Miko has been found.” His eyes found Aka for a moment or two, and then he addressed Shun without returning his gaze to him. “You do realize that the elders among your advisors are going to insist that some amount of fuss be made…” He next glanced to Chisaka, half expecting a comment, but she was more than half drowsing where she sat, so he shook his head mildly, and instead offered his arm to Aka. “If you’re ready…?”
