Name: Tenrai
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Position: Seishi
Symbol and location: Tenrai bears the star symbol ‘Woman’, located on right side of his chest.
Power: Tenrai has the ability to control and manipulate weather to a certain extent. He can summon clouds and make it rain, and can cause things such as gusts of wind and bolts of lightning. The bigger a weather phenomenon is, the more difficulty he has controlling it, but he has been working to improve his abilities. The only downside to his power is that, due to his Seishi Symbol being ‘Woman’, he transforms into a woman whenever he uses his ability.
Weapon: Tenrai’s weapon of choice is a pair of metal folding fans. The edges are sharpened to act as knives/blades. The fans are elaborately decorated to disguise their status as weapons, and blend in well when he is dressed as a woman. When he is dressed as a man, he does have a sword he carries. He is skilled with it, but is more used to his fans.
Birthplace: Hokkan
Affiliation: Genbu
Appearance: Tenrai, in either his masculine or feminine form, is quite feminine in appearance. His hair is black and straight, and hangs to his upper back when loose, although he usually pulls it back in some way. His eyes are a stormy gray in color, and are a bit wider than most males, though not as wide as most females. His face is rounder than most men his age, and his skin is quite pale. He stands at about 5’8” in his male form and shrinks to about5'4" in his female form, and has a small frame, although he is not nearly as weak as one would think upon first glance. He is well toned and muscular from training, although his usual manner of dress hides that fact well. His physical strength in either form is equal to that of most any male his age. His voice is softer than most, but still has a slightly masculine sound to it(though one has to be listening to hear it), unless he is in his female form.
After the first few times Tenrai transformed, he realized it was quite embarrassing for others to see him go from male to female, and then back again. With that in mind, he made the decision to use his feminine appearance in his favor and began to dress as a woman. Most people believe he is a woman, and it allows him to use his ability when he needs to without feeling so awkward about it.
His usual manner of ‘casual’ dress includes finely made dresses, usually darker in color. He also tends to wear cloaks or capes to help hide his lack of a bosom in his male form, and the sudden appearance of one when he transforms. He will, on occasion, dress as a man, if the need arises. His outfit when dressed as a man is literally nothing special, as he tries not to draw any attention to himself. He also tries not to use his powers when dressed like a man, not wanting to have others notice his transformation. He does make it a point to keep a cloak on, whenever possible, should he have to use his powers and transform. Like the one he wears when dressed as a woman, it is to minimize the chance of anyone noticing his changing anatomy. He dresses this way when traveling great distances at a time, as it is easier than traveling in dresses, and safer to travel as a man.
When dressed as a woman, Tenrai does wear jewelry. Not out of any particular fondness for it, but simply because it adds to the illusion of him being female. His ears are pierced, and he does wear bracelets and such. When dressed as a man, he doesn’t wear any sort of adornment.
Personality: Tenrai tries his best to be friendly, and succeeds in small groups, but his nervousness over others seeing him transform makes him become quite withdrawn and shy in larger settings. He doesn’t trust his secret to most people, only telling those he has to, or feels whole-heartedly that he can trust to understand and not make fun of him.
His shyness extends past social settings, and he is also quite modest when it comes to not only his own body, but others as well. He will not let anyone else see him, in either form, as anything other than fully dressed, and he will actually blush and avert/cover his eyes if anyone else around him is less than fully dressed…even if it is something as simple as another man taking off his shirt.
Once one gains his trust, his inner personality begins to shine through. He is a very smart individual, and is quite determined. Knowing his destiny as a Genbu Seishi, He has devoted much of his private time to training so that he may protect his future Miko to the fullest of his potential. He also has a pretty good sense of humor, and likes to make others laugh, once he is comfortable enough with them to start making jokes. He is also a rather sentimental person, and has a fondness for small keepsakes and such, although he rarely lets others know this. He can be a worrier, often fretting over the safety of those he cares for, especially if he is not in a position to insure their safety. He is not violent in nature, but does his best not to be a pushover either. This means he will not fight someone ‘just because’, but he will stand his ground if he feels it’s what is right. He has a very caring, gentle side to him, and has a special fondness for animals. However this, like many other things about him, is something he really doesn’t show until he trusts someone. It is difficult enough for him to feel ‘masculine’ without others thinking him weak or wimpy.
Due to his familiarity with the physical form of both genders, and his embarrassment over said familiarity, he has found it difficult to harbor any sort of romantic interest in either gender. Still, he is confident that when love is ready to find him, he’ll know, whatever gender that person may be.
History: When he was only a few days old, a baby boy was abandoned upon the steps of a Genbu shrine by his parents. No explanation was left, and no name for the small child. The Maidens who tended to the shrine felt bad for the child, and knew he would most likely not survive without their help. They took him in and raised him, allowing him a simple, yet happy childhood. Most of the time, he was just called ‘Boy’ or ‘Child’ by the maidens, and was never given a proper name. He never really saw much need for one, either, as he rarely interacted with anyone besides the maidens who raised him.
When he was seven years old, his powers manifested themselves for the first time. He had gone outside the shrine to play, and found a stray cat he had befriended some time ago, dead. Distraught, he began to cry, and soon a rainstorm formed over the shrine, while the rest of the area remained unaffected. It was then that he realized something had changed besides the weather. More frightened than anything else, he ran to the maidens for help. Most were baffled, but Maiko, the oldest maiden at the shrine, pulled the child aside and calmly began to check for the seishi symbol she knew had to be present. When she found the symbol ‘Woman’ glowing on the confused child’s chest, she began to calm the child, noting that once he was calm and the rain stopped, he returned to his ‘proper’ gender. She then proceeded to explain that he was a Genbu seishi with the the ability to control weather. She also did her best to explain that, because of his symbol, he would, unfortunately, turn female any time he used his power. She knew it was difficult for a child so young to understand what all of this meant, but she was proud that he seemed to be following along well. She then, at last, gave him the name ‘Tenrai’, explaining that it was his seishi name, and the name he would use henceforth. Being the oldest shrine maiden there, she was the only one who remembered years earlier when Genbu himself had spoken to one of the maidens, foretelling of the young seishi’s arrival, name, symbol and power.
Tenrai continued to live with the shrine maidens for some time after, training himself to better control his powers. He was still unbelievably embarrassed that he changed genders whenever he used his power, but the maidens were kind and accepting of him, as they had always been, and never treated him any differently then they had before his powers manifested.
When he was thirteen, he began to run errands for the maidens, going into the small villages nearby to pick up supplies and other such things for them. On one such occasion, he was on his way through town when he came across a bunch of older boys picking on a young girl. Without thinking, he used his power to knock the boys over with a gust of wind. Unfortunately, quite a few townsfolk saw him change, quite obviously, from a boy to a girl and back again. The little girl ran away, and the older boys turned their bullying on him. The townsfolk who had seen him change thought him some sort of freak, and cheered the boys on, causing Tenrai to flee quickly, knowing he couldn’t take them all on, and not wanting to display his powers in front of the jeering crowd again.
When he returned to the shrine, he told Maiko what had happened. She did her best to console the youth, and assured him he didn’t have to return to that village. There were others nearby they could get supplies from. It wasn’t until after a few more experiences similar to the first that Tenrai and Maiko came up with the plan to dress Tenrai as a female when he left the shrine. The notion was rather embarrassing for the young teen, but he saw no other way to be able to travel away from his home.
When he was sixteen, Maiko pulled him aside and told him he would have to leave the shrine soon. She said as a Seishi, it was his duty to seek out and protect the Genbu no Miko. She also gave him the bladed fans as a way to protect himself without relying so heavily on his abilities. He was sad to leave the only home and family he had ever known, but was assured he’d always have a place there.
All goodbyes said, he set out to look for the Genbu no Miko, traveling all over Hokkan in search of her. While traveling, he made sure to continue training himself, not only with his powers, but also with his bladed fans, and after a while, with a sword he acquired. He strived to be strong enough to protect the Miko, and one day when he was able to return to his childhood home, also protect the maidens who had raised him.
Recently, he was able to return to the shrine and visit his ‘family’. While there, he discovered one of the maidens had begun to care for a small kitten that had been abandoned by its mother. Feeling an odd sort of kinship with the cat, Tenrai took to it instantly, and vice versa, the kitten, which Tenrai named Aya, was thankfully well enough to go with him when he left once more in search of the Genbu no Miko.
Important NPCs: Maiko: The oldest maiden at the Genbu shrine where Tenrai was raised. She is the closest thing to a mother he has ever known, and he cares for her deeply.
Shrine Maidens: The various others, besides Maiko, that helped to raise him and serve as the only family he’s ever known.
Aya: Tenrai's small pet kitten and traveling companion. She is light gray in color with white patches over her left eye, right ear, and two of her paws. She often travels either on his shoulder, or in a pocket on his person, though he is always careful never to put her anywhere she would get squished or be unable to get enough air.
