Name: Mariko Yukihara (Mari for short)
Age: 19
Gender: Female
Position: Byakko no Miko
Symbol and location: N/A
Power: Mariko hears a short, distinct melody of a few notes whenever she first meets one of her Seishi. The melody is different with each Seishi, but similar enough that she knows what it means. She can also sense if one of her Seishi is hurt, as it causes a minor ache/pain on her body in the exact location as the injury on her Seishi. That Seishi's melody also plays in her mind, telling her which Seishi is injured. Though is is more of a talent than it is a power, she has an amazing ear for music, and can easily memorize a tune she hears, especially if it is short.
Weapon: No physical weapons, just the power of music! Also, she studied karate from a young age, and is a black-belt. She claimed to want to learn it for self defense, but in truth she just wanted to learn to break boards and stuff.
Birthplace: Hokkaido, Japan
Affiliation: Her family (specifically her brother), her band/friends, then her Seishi and Byakko, though she considers her Seishi to be her friends as well.
Appearance:
Mariko is about 5'5", with a thin, strong build, and a generally girly figure. She has somewhat pale skin, and a few tiny scars collected during a typical childhood. She has medium blue hair, which goes just past her shoulders and is naturally curly, but the style can vary from day to day. She has bright, wide purple eyes. Although both hair and eyes are the same shade as her twin brother, somehow both seem to look lighter on her than they do on him.
Her manner of dress can also vary greatly from day to day, ranging anywhere from an almost normal looking jeans and t-shirt combo to a distinctly J-rock inspired combo of some sort. There are a few constant elements to her ensemble, however. She almost always carries her acoustic guitar strapped to her back, and she almost always has a messenger bag containing the usual purse essentials such as cell phone, brush, wallet and mp3 player, as well as a notebook and pen, in case she gets a song idea, though that is rare. The other contents of the bag can vary from day to day.
She does not like makeup, and so will not go any further than the occasional lip gloss, unless her band has a gig. She does, however, enjoy jewelry, and has four piercings in each ear She's also known to wear many bracelets and rings, but only one necklace. It is a 'best friends' type necklace, which she shares with her brother.
Personality:
Mariko is an upbeat, energetic person who loves to make new friends. She isn't overly trusting, though, and makes sure to get a feel for someone before fully trusting them. She doesn't come off as hostile, though, simply rational in her dealings with strangers. She's good at reading a situation, and at least trying to respond accordingly. When she feels she is in over her head in a given situation, she does her best to keep up until she can find help somewhere. She has a good heart, and likes to help others, especially those who are either close to her, or whom she feels she owes something to, though she helps anyone she feels in in genuine need, even if all she can do is offer moral support. She is also quite protective of her friends and family, wanting them to be happy, healthy, and safe.
Mariko has a very active imagination, and is fond of daydreaming, the content of which usually centers around her band hitting it big, or meeting some of her musical idols. Despite this fanciful side of her personality, she is something of a worrier, as she is also primarily acting as manager for her band, which includes booking their small gigs, as well as making sure the apartment they share taken care of, bills paid(though they all contribute to pay them), groceries bought (again, a shared expense), etc. When she is feeling a little too stressed out, she tries to unwind by playing simple tunes on her acoustic guitar. She loves music and movies, and other sensory-intensive forms of entertainment, such as video games, which contrasts with her twin brother, Tamakyo, who shares her love of music, but prefers to read a nice book over watching some loud movie.
History:
Mariko was born the second oldest of five children, and the youngest of a set of twins, to a high school Literature teacher, and the owner of a small CD store in Hokkaido. Mari took to her father from a young age, learning a love of music from the hours spent at his store, listening to everything she could get her hands on, while her twin brother, Tama, took to reading, and in time, writing. It was around middle school that both learned they had a talent for music, both able to sing wonderfully. Mari took to guitar, learning on an acoustic her father bought second-hand for her. It wasn't until the pair entered high school that Mari began seriously considering that they start a band, pointing out that some of the popular J-Rock bands had only two or three members. Tama agreed, suggesting he could write songs for them.
It was with this thought in mind that the twins, upon graduating from high school, told their parents they wished to move to Tokyo and attempt to start their own band. Their mother was disappointed that neither wanted to attend college, and was worried their dreams would fall through, but their father was certain that they had the talent and spirit to succeed. After much discussion, their parents agreed to support them, giving them the money they had saved for the pair to attend college to help them move and get settled in.
When Mari and Tama arrived in Tokyo, they rented an apartment, and both got jobs; Mari at a Visual-Kei themed clothing store called Rocking Station, and Tama at a CD store run by a friend of their father's. Shortly after starting the job, Mari befriended a coworker named Sai who was also interested in starting a band. After much discussion, as well as a jam session or two, the trio decided to form a band, with Mari and Tama sharing vocals, Mari serving as guitarist, Tama as bassist, and Sai as drummer. Shortly after, Sai moved in with the two, and they began splitting their time between their day jobs and getting gigs for their band. Tama, who loved reading mythology, suggested the name Shiro Tora for the band, and the others agreed. Even though the band usually only gets small gigs with little pay, and even though they still mostly preform covers of popular J-Rock and anime songs, they have faith that they'll hit it big one day. The trio have even bought new instruments for performances, an electric guitar for Mari, an electric bass for Tama, and a new drum set for Sai, though they still practice on their older instruments(Mari and Tama having bought second hand a electric guitar and bass, respectively, upon arriving in Tokyo). Despite the amazing new instruments, Mari still holds a special fondness for the acoustic guitar given to her by her father all those years ago, and rarely goes anywhere without it.
One day, while shopping with Sai, Mari came across a small second-hand bookstore, and decided to look around, in case she saw something Tama might like. She found a book with white binding and an image of a tiger on the cover. She and Sai agreed it was fitting for Tama, given their band name. When Mari went to check out with the book, the old woman behind the counter insisted she'd never seen the book before and told the girls they could have it free of charge. The pair finished their shopping, and headed for home. As they were walking, Mari stuffed her shopping, mostly jewelry, into her ever-present messenger bag before pulling out the book to look it over. She flipped it open and began to read, intent to see what the book she'd gotten for her brother was about. After reading a few lines, she was engulfed by a white light and pulled into the book, Sai calling for her and attempting to figure out what was going on. Seeing that her friend had vanished without a trace, Sai snatched up the book and ran home, intent to tell Tama what happened, and see what he thought they should do.
Important NPCs:
Tamakyo Yukihara: Mari's older twin brother. Though he is the same height as his sister, and has the same hair and eye color, both his hair and eyes look slightly darker on him then they do on her. His hair is short, the natural curls appearing more like small spikes. He wears the other half of the 'best friends' necklace belonging to his sister. He is somewhat protective of her, and worries for her once she is pulled into the book. He and Sai take turns reading her adventures in 'The Universe of the Four Gods'.
Chiisaiko Murakami: Sai, Mari's best friend and bandmate, is a couple years older than the twins, and a couple inches shorter. She has bright red hair that, though straight, is often styled in some odd hairdo or another. She also has bright, clear green eyes. She's a bit of a prankster sometimes, and has been known to barely miss getting in trouble with the law for her more outlandish pranks, though she has been banned from a few places as punishment. This causes Tama to initially doubt her story when she returns home with the book and tells him what happened to Mari.
Diru: Diru is a small black cat that the trio adopted shortly after Sai moved in with them. They were unable to agree on a name until the cat curled up and purred while they practiced a cover of a Dir en Grey song. After that, they agreed her name would be Diru and joke she is their band mascot, even joking that they'll make her a white tiger costume to wear on the cover of their first album when they get 'discovered'.
Family: Mari's mother, Ayame, and father, Hiroshi, are both very supportive of their oldest children, despite some initial reservations. They have two younger brothers, Kaoru (16) and Tatsuya (11), and one younger sister, Kinuko (14). All three look up to their older siblings. The family plans to pay a visit to the twins in Tokyo at some point soon to attend one of their gigs and root them on in person.
