He has a rather short temper, and is quite easily annoyed, especially by questions and anyone who back-talks him. He is quite proud, though not vain, as he sees no practical point in vanity. He has never been caught, or even seen, when he was on a job, and though he has a reputation as a skilled assassin, he is known only as Shinja ('Sacred Snake'). He will accept nearly any job, so long as the pay is good.
He is very serious and mature, making him seem and feel older than his twenty-five years. He has very little patience when it come to adults who don't know how to take things seriously, and who he feels act frivolously. He does have a few scruples, however. He will not harm children, either directly (as in killing them or kidnapping them) or indirectly (by killing a parent and leaving the body where the child might find it or killing in front of a child). This is because he had his own innocence taken at such a young age, and doesn't wish to be the reason some other child loses their own chance for a happy life. Sometimes, when he is traveling through a town with an orphanage, he will leave an anonymous donation to help care for the children there. He feels that, perhaps, these actions atone, at least a little, for all the lives he has taken in the past.

Yuuzen has dark purple, almost black hair that comes down to his mid back, though he usually keeps it pulled back with a white ribbon. Quite a bit of his hair frames his face, and it is not uncommon for hair to cover at least one of his eyes. His eyes are a very, very light blue about the same shade as aquamarine gemstones. They are cold, and never give away his inner thoughts or feelings, though he is good at projecting false emotions, when needed, using his eyes.
He is tall, standing at exactly 6', and is thin, but fit and strong, his muscle lean rather than bulky. He has pale skin, partly due to the fact that he spends very little time in the open sunlight, preferring to do most of his movement in the dark when it is easier to blend in.
His typical manner of dress includes black boots, trousers, shirt and cloak, a white belt, and a long white scarf. When on a job, he also wears black leather gloved, and a hood that hides his face and distinctive hair color.
The scarf does serve a purpose, however. Yuuzen has a long scar that runs the width of the front of his neck. It is a constant reminder of the only time he let someone get the upper hand against him, and he hates it for that reason. He wears the scarf constantly to hide the scar, even sleeping in it, and only removes it when bathing.

He attracted little attention, as he was too young to make a good slave or servant, but an older woman took an interest in him, and bought him for a low price.
The woman, who told Yuuzen to call her “Youbo” (which means adoptive mother), took him to a large home several towns away. She gave him a hearty meal and dressed him in nice clothing before putting him in a nice room. As he feel asleep that first night, Youbo told him he'd start to earn his keep in the morning. The next morning, the child awoke to discover he and Youbo were not the only ones in the large house. There were several others, both male and female, ranging in age from just a little older than him to adult. One of the grown men dragged him off to an empty room where Youbo was waiting to talk to him. She informed him that she was the head of an Assassin Guild, and that he was their newest member.
From that day forth, he was trained day and night in the various skills he would need as an assassin. He cried himself to sleep often those first few months, but his heart soon hardened to what he must do, and by the time he turned ten, he was just as cool and collected as any other training under Youbo. He was trained with many weapons, though he picked up blades the quickest. As his skills improved, he was subjected to random tests to help further hone his skills. He'd often be attacked at random while eating or even sleeping, and it was never simply an attempt to catch him off guard. Those who attacked would try to kill him, and the only way to survive would be to kill them instead.

She had initially complained about being saddled with a 'kid', but once they reached the target's house, she was impressed with the way he pretended to be a lost and frightened child to gain entry. From there, it was a simply matter for him to take the life and slip away unseen.
Musume developed a fascination with him from that point forth, but it was not until he was sixteen that she made her first move to seduce him. He rejected her, and she was furious, convincing one of the other assassins, who was her current lover, that Yuuzen needed to be eliminated. The much older man, pretending to befriend him, got Yuuzen quite drunk and then tried to slit his throat. Though his senses were dulled from drink, he managed to fight back, though he did suffer a horrible neck wound which left a nasty scar. He killed the older man, and returned to the house, telling Musume she should pick more skilled lovers if she intended to try and kill him.
He rose quickly through the ranks of the guild, so that by the time he was twenty, he was second only to Youbo and Musume.
