It is not a bad thing in itself, it pretty much depends on how she uses such ability. Though she would never make use of it in order to harm others, she will mainly do so to survive. Depending on the motives for her to use said skill it can drain her energy or use up little of it. Her skill not only enhances emotions but can also make a person go in a trance, like a daydream of some sort, and she can even put a person to sleep. In said cases, the more powerful the target the more energy she will need to use and that can be dangerous in itself, since she is a magical being, being rendered defenceless is something she cannot afford so she is careful with how she uses her skills.
Water: Being a child of the sea she can manipulate water in various ways, from forming small shapes to using it to charm the onlooker alongside her voice. If enraged she can control water recklessly but that would use so much energy she could be either an easy target or at the verge of dying from exhaustion. Umiko is pretty aware of the fact that even a god bleeds so she is extra careful and ensures her survival above anything else.
Umiko also possesses a great skill at healing and this is her main occupation on land, she is well known for her effective methods and she enjoys being able to help people at least on that accord if at all.

Underwater she mainly uses her magic skills that help to keep her safe, however, when on land she wields a double-edged spear which she carries on her back and both blades have small pieces of cloth to cover them to make her journeying easier and safer. It is light yet hardy and she learned to use it a very long time ago, she made a human friend who taught her several martial arts, however, she has not seen that person ever since and at times she travels the land in search for him hoping to help him if he is still alive or to find any information regarding his whereabouts. She deems she owed him that, at least out of respect.

Umiko is a rather silent person, due to living in a clan where her father was mainly engaged at work or a lot was expected from her. It became her main means of self-defence against others. She also prefers the sounds of nature to the sound of a voice, and also uses this in order to keep herself distanced from others. She does not want to grow close to others because she knows that only brings pain and misunderstanding, besides, she considers her existence temporary, compared to most of her own race, she was forced upon a harsh task only she can carry out and so she does not want to make people suffer once her time comes. It could be said that deep down she hides her truly wonderful heart and personality, in her cold and silent demeanour but, as they say, the eyes never lie, and hers sparkle with great intensity and almost a deep desire to live on.
Another reason she is silent is because she knows she can be truly loyal and if anything tied her to this world she would rebel against her sad fate. In a way she uses the cold façade to disguise this virtue of hers, if no one sees the person she truly is there is no harm in anyone appreciating her. The only moment when she at times shows her emotions is when she is on her own. Hard as it might be, she would never forget the gentle smile of her beloved mother or her loving embrace. Which is why she is greatly fond of music, storytelling and singing. Even though she might hide it, there is still that tenderness in her awakened by the few memories she shared with her mother before she was gone. In her human form Umiko has long dark hair that reaches way past her waist and thick she usually either sets lose or combs it in a long ponytail tied with beautiful hairbands. She is rather thin and bit due to her martial arts and constant travelling and though she is not extremely tall, standing at 5’8’’ she has great speed and agility. Her eyes are deep and probably the one thing she could not control as much as she would like. Her eyes are of a deep amethyst colour and they sparkle like the precious gems themselves. Although, her whole persona can seem cold, distant and doll-like, her eyes are warm and show the true person she could be, the person she used to be before her fate was revealed to her. She usually wears a white kimono with transparent sleeves where her under shirt can be seen be the long red sleeves. She has black trousers and light brought traveling boots. Her kimono reaches to her shins but they open up to make her travelling and fighting easy. She has a golden belt that ties it all together and a lovely emerald necklace that is the symbol of her clan and the constant reminder of her fate. Red, gold, white and purple are the colours of her claim and she wears them with pride.

Her mermaid form is slightly different from her human form. Whenever underwater she has a lovely light blue tail with hints of darker tones of blue. It has a lovely pearl bracelet on the bottom near the fins that decorate her tail and her upper body is covered by her long light blue hair and deep aquamarine eyes. Her chest is lightly covered by an elegant top and her hair is mainly lose and her forehead is decorated by a small tribal tiara that indicates she is the daughter of the Chieftain. Her tail usually shines at night with the moonlight as if it was made of sparkling precious gems.

From her birth she was taught everything she was bound to do as a daughter of the Chieftain and in order to keep the unity and survival of the clan but she only took it rather seriously after her mother passed away. Umiko changed completely and from the happy and cheerful child she used to be, so carefree and loving, she turned into a cold and isolated being. She distanced herself from her own family due to the hostility within her father and how she never managed to get close to him. When her mother Yuki sacrificed her existence for the clan, Umiko felt that part of her own self died along with her. The pain had been too great that she did not want that sacrifice to go to waste, she wanted to keep her people safe and to show her mother she valued the effort. But she also got frightened, and though she thought it best not to grow attache to anyone due to her destiny, she felt lonely and afraid of what awaited her and though she learned to resign to this now, that doe snot men she is not afraid still.

And so whenever it had to be used or the clan was in danger, it would use the power within the soul of an important member of the clan to save the people. This artefact was granted by the Four Gods in an agreement to ensure that the power of the mermaids could not be used to harm the people of the outside world, but also so that they could not be found nor used in order to gain power. Due to the constant wars between he Four kingdoms the ancient mermaids agreed to this deal and to the price that was to be paid due to this powerful protection, but now, after many years have passed and many persons had been sacrificed, Umiko is hesitant to believe that is the only way to keep her people safe. But even now, after seeking much information, she still cannot find another way.

And so she sought the outer world and travelled in search for another solution, and the sight of the rising sun always felt refreshing to her, for it represented her last ray of hope. She trained hard her powers and martial arts and became quite dextrous with her double blade spear, all this to help her concentrate and at the same time ignore this dark fate she had been thrown at.
