Name: Shun Yutai (Seishi name: Teikan)
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Symbol and location: ‘Heart’ located on his chest, over his heart.
Power: Oracle: Shun is an Oracle, like his mother. This means he has the ability to foresee future events. He has constant, vague notions of future events, which help him in decision making, but also has occasional, very specific visions.
Medium: Unlike his mother, Shun is also able to communicate with spirits of the dearly departed. He can summon these spirits, but they usually show up to bother him without him summoning them.
Summoner: In addition to summoning ghosts, Shun can summon nature spirits. Unlike with the ghosts, anyone can see the nature spirits he summons, and because he always gives them the respect they deserve, they are always glad to run errands and perform favors for him.
Aura Reading: Shun’s only actual ‘Seishi’ power. He is able to see a person’s aura and interpret their personality from it. It, along with his visions and communication with spirits, gives him a good idea of how trustworthy someone is.
Weapon: A sword that used to belong to his father. The sword is strong and flexible. It has a dragon curled around the hilt, bearing a single sapphire eye. Shun was rained with it from a young age, but trusts those within his palace, and his personal guards, so much that he usually leaves it in his room, using it as part of his 'formal' attire when addressing the public, or when traveling outside the capital. Although hand-to-hand combat was always frowned upon for a prince, he can hold his own against a similarly built opponent.
Birthplace: The palace in the capital of Kutou.
Affiliation: His family,.Kutou and its people, then Seriyuu and his Miko and fellow Seishi, although all are very closely right in his priorities. In order to properly serve one, he feels he must devotedly serve all.
Appearance: Shun inherited a pale complexion and light brown hair from his mother, but his soft green eyes are the very same that have run in his father’s family for generations. His hair is shoulder length, and has a slight curl to it. Shun usually keeps it in a low ponytail. He is tall, standing at exactly 6’, and has an average, healthy build. He is by no means the strongest, most muscular man in the world, but neither is he scrawny.
Being an Emperor, he dresses the part. He is always seen in the finest materials. He usually wears light, earth tones such as browns and greens to accent his coloration. He wears a full, ornate silver crown when addressing matters of state or addressing the public in his ‘formal attire’, but when ‘dressed down’ on a daily basis, in his less formal attire, he has a silver circlet, designed to look like two dragons meeting with a simple dark blue stone in the center. Both the stone and dragon design are meant to pay homage to Kutou’s guardian deity, Seriyuu. Both the crown and circlet have been passed down through his family for generations.
Personality: Shun is, in many ways, vastly different from what people have come to expect the Emperor of Kutou to be. He genuinely tries to do what he feels is best for his people, and rarely uses his power and influence to push others around. That is not to say that he never takes advantage of his position, as he has learned that sometimes doing so is the only way to get anything accomplished. He is, however, quite peaceful, and will not attack another country or colony without just cause. He almost never acts without consulting with his advisors, and often with the spirits as well. He rules Kutou with a level head and a long heart. He always takes his task as Emperor seriously. He has done his best during his reign to make living conditions better for the poorer villages, while keeping the greedy upper classes in check.
When not concerned with matters of state, Shun is rather friendly, and sometimes oblivious. He likes to flirt, and is horrible at it, but since he is the Emperor, most women he flirts with pretend to be flattered and return his interest. It never goes past flirting, however, as he wishes to not have all of the fuss and scandal that comes with illegitimate heirs, having learned from his own childhood. Even when not being flirtatious, he is generally quite friendly. He is a kind and caring person, raised with a strong sense of justice. He will not stand for someone being mistreated, and will show concern and compassion to all, regardless of past or status. He does not feel some people are ‘better’ than others, simply because they were born into a more affluent family.
Thanks in no small part to his abilities, and the fact that spirits have a habit of showing up and voicing their opinions, with or without Shun’s requesting it, it is not uncommon for one to happen upon the young Emperor seemingly talking to himself. He makes no fuss about it, and will sincerely tell anyone who comes along exactly who he was speaking with, and usually about what. He does get irritable when spirits do not listen to what he has to say, and sometimes snaps, either at the offending spirit, or at anyone who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. He has developed a short fuse when dealing with his late father in particular.
History: Shun’s father, Shui Yutai, the former Emperor of Kutou was very young when he took the throne, barely fifteen. Due to his age and inexperience, an Oracle was brought all the way from Ifurei in Hokkan. The Oracle, Jia, was also quite young, only fourteen herself, and due in no small part to their close interaction and similar age, the two quickly fell in love. Due to several laws that were in place at the time, they were forbidden to marry, and so the two pursued their taboo relationship in secret for many years. Their relationship was ousted, however, when Jia gave birth to a son whom she named Shun. At his birth, Jia prophesied that her son would see the coming of the Four Priestesses within his lifetime, although no one gave it much consideration at the time.
Despite being illegitimate, Shun was doted upon by his father, and given all the attention and love a proper heir would receive. Shui’s advisors would not allow him to name his young son his heir, and insisted he take a wife and produce a son. Shui did marry a young noblewoman from a small Kingdom far off. Although he still loved Jia with all of his heart, he took his marital valves seriously, and devoted himself to his new wife and producing an heir. He helped with time that he would grow to love her, and though he did become fond of her, it was never as strong as his love for Jia.
When Shun was 2 years old, his stepmother gave birth to a son named Rumaty. Although he was now intended to be the heir, Rumaty never showed the interest and natural affinity that his older brother did for learning how to rule their country. Despite this, the brothers were very close.
When Shun was seven years old and Rumaty was five, Rumaty's mother delivered again. This time, the boys received twin younger sisters, Liru and Lisu. Their mother died in childbirth, and Shui refused to remarry, insisting that he loved Jia and would not marry again unless it was to her. When this option was still denied, he remained officially a widower, though Jia returned from a self-imposed exile at Mt. Taikyoku to raise all four children with all of the love and affection she showed her own son. Shuts advisors were displeased with her return, although they acknowledged that someone needed to care for the small children.
While all of this political turmoil was underway, a much more private uproar settled in when, at the age of eight, Shun made his first prophecy. It was simply that Liru and Lisu would shortly begin crying, but seeing as the small boy was on the other side of the palace from his baby sisters, he had no way of knowing that they would. Realizing her son had inherited her prophetic gift, Jia began to help train the boy in his ability. She quickly discovered that, in addition to foreseeing the future, the child could communicate with spirits after he mentioned having a discussion with his father’s late wife. Being unable to personally train him with this particular ability, Jia took her son to Mt. Taikyoku where he trained for four years with Taiitsukun to learn to properly summon and communicate with various spirits. It was difficult, given his age, but he persisted and was able to return home just before his thirteenth birthday.
Time passed, and the young family grew up. Jia treated Rumaty, Liru and Lisu as she would have her own children, acting as their mother, and all four children forged a close, loving bond. When Shun was fifteen, his father was poisoned by an assassin. Although it didn’t kill him, it left him ill for a long time, and it was widely known he would not survive. There was great scandal in the empire, as Rumaty was clearly the legitimate male heir, but the young man had no desire to rule. Shun, meanwhile, showed a natural talent at making wise decisions even at such a young age, and would make a wonderful emperor if not for his illegitimate status. His father's advisors formed a temporary board of trustees to rule the country until the matter could be sorted out. There were two factions, one supporting each son, that proved willing to cause violence to get their way.
Finally, in an attempt to end the debate, Rumaty abdicated the throne, refusing to become the Emperor and leaving the capital shortly before his father died.
With no other options, and no time to attempt to produce a new legitimate male heir, Shun was finally accepted as the heir to the throne. It was considered preferred over either of his sisters having to marry to take the throne, given that they were still quite young. Only a few months later, Shui died, and Shun was made Emperor, just a few weeks shy of his sixteenth birthday.
Despite the initial scandal that came with his taking the throne, he has ruled for the past eight years, surprising all with his level head and just decisions. He decided early on to change the laws so that, when the time came, and he and his sisters were ready to marry, they would be able to marry whomever they liked. He also promised he would never try to force either sister into a relationship for political gain. Along with the rest of his advisers, Shun has also had his mother and two sisters added to his council of advisers, insisting their opinion was more important to him than anyone else’s. He also tried to convince his brother to return as an advisor, but has had no luck in that matter.
He has yet to discover his Seishi ability, which has remained dormant all these years. Likewise, neither he nor anyone around him has any idea he is a Seishi, thinking only that he is an unusually gifted Oracle.
Important NPCs: Jia: Shun’s mother. She loved Shui very much, despite being unable to marry him, and raised Rumaty, Liru and Lisu as her own children after their mother died. She uses her visions to help guide her son in his rule, but also allows him to follow his own intuition and interpret his own visions. Like her son, she has pale skin, and light brown, curly hair. Her eyes are also brown.
Liru and Lisu: Shun’s younger sisters, both sixteen years old. They love and respect their older brothers, and proudly serve Shun and the nation of Kutou as advisers, holding no ill-will towards him for being names the heir despite his illegitimate status. They tease him from time to time about his flirtatious ways, being the only ones who feel they can speak to him honestly. Both girls have lightly tanned skin, soft green eyes, and long straight black hair. Both also wear simple silver tiaras with blue stones.
Shui: Shun’s late father. He often shows up to offer his input on how things should be run, often getting on his son’s nerves in the process. He also tends to pass messages on to Jia through Shun, as Jia is unable to communicate with spirits.
