The Four Gods that rule the Universe of the Four Gods, the place in which our story is set, are Suzaku, Seiryuu, Genbu, and Byakko. Each rules their own domain of this universe, these domains being the cardinal directions: North, South, East, and West. Each God has their own element and season affiliated with them as well.
Suzaku: The Red Bird, the South, Summer - In the very first animated Fushigi Yuugi series, this God was affiliated with the "good guys". Miaka Yuki being the Miko, all seven of her Seishi were always at her side and did their best to protect her. In Chinese mythology, this God was represented by a large red bird that resembles a Phoenix. The people of Konan, the nation to the south, worship Suzaku as a deity. Suzaku's affiliated element is fire and his main color is red.
Seiryuu: The Blue Dragon, the West, Autumn - Like Suzaku, Seiryuu had a major part in the first animated series for Fushigi Yuugi as well. This God, however, seemed to possess Seishi that represented everything that the Suzaku Seishi were not. Seiryuu's Miko being Yui Hongo, it seemed that each warrior had something 'wrong' with them mentally, physically, or both. This God is represented as a blue dragon in Chinese mythology, its affiliated element being water. The name of the country in Seryuu's domain is Kutou. It's color is blue, and it's lement is water
Genbu: The Black Tortoise, the North, Winter -
Although only mentioned in passing, in the original Fushigi Yuugi series, there has recently been an entire manga series devoted to the exploits of Takiko Oukuda, the first Genbu no Miko, and her Seishi. Having not read it, I can not offer much insight on what they were like, but they seemed to genuinely care for their Miko. This God is represented by a black tortoise, and is associated with the element earth. it's domain covers the country to the north, Hokkan. Despite being a black Tortoise, the color associated with Genbu in Fushigi Yuugi is silver, the element is earth, and when a Miko is summoned to the 'Universe of the Four Gods' there is not only silver light, but swirling snow.
Byakko: The White Tiger, the East, Spring - So far, Byakko is the only Miko/Seishi set that we have yet to meet in any great detail in the Fushoigi Yuugi series. Their Miko, Suzuno Osugi, seemed very close to her Seishi, telling stories of her adventures for the rest of her life. In Mythology, this God is represented by a white tiger, and is associated with the element air. It's domain, the east, covers the nation of Sailo. It is associated with the color white.
