Name: Torima (Real name: Jin)
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Position: Seishi
Symbol and location: "Rooftop", located on his lower back in his human form. When he shifts into an animal form, the symbol is on/near the back, but is not visible to 'normal' humans. His Miko, other Seishi, and any demi-god/goddesses/Fiends/etc. Can see it.
Power:
Shape Shifting: Jin can shape shift into just about any animal at will. The shift affects his clothing as well as anything he's carrying, which makes it a useful way to travel. Larger animals are less painful for him to shift into, but require more energy to hold, so those transformations do not last as long. Smaller animals hurt a bit more to initially shift into, but use less energy, so he is able to hold that form longer. He has no special abilities in his animal form, but is capable of whatever the actual animal is capable of.
Telepathic Communication with Animals: Due to his closer connection to animals, he is able to communicate telepathically with them, and can sometimes even talk them into preforming small favors for him.
Healing Knowledge: Not actually one of his Seishi abilities, but living on the street as he has, he's had to learn how to treat many basic injuries and illnesses. He most often uses this knowledge when he manages to receive a small injury, but has also been known to tend to sick and injured animals he finds during his travels.
Weapon: He does have a katana he stole when he was sixteen, but he prefers to use his abilities in battle, shifting into a bear or a wolf, or sometimes a poisonous serpent, if deadly force is necessary. He's also good at hand-to-hand combat.
Birthplace: A small village near the Kutou-Sailo boarder.
Affiliation: Genbu
Appearance: Image.
The spitting image of the father he never met, Jin is tall, about 6'2”, and has deep purple spiky hair that comes down to about his mid-upper back, which he usually ties back somehow. His eyes are also deep purple and are typically quite expressive, His skin is lightly tanned, and he has a lean but strong build. It's hard to become overweight living the lifestyle he has, but it is easy to gain muscle, and so he is a bit stronger than he looks. His usual manner of dress includes black boots that come up to his mid shin, black trousers, and a white long sleeved shirt with a dark colored vest. He does have a katana, which he wears at his side at all times, but it's not his favorite means of self defense. He also has a simple pack, usually carried over one shoulder, which contains, among other things, his flute, the small clay bowl he sets out for tips when playing for money, and a few other possessions. His ears are pierced, but otherwise the only adornment he wears is a silver band on a silver chain around his neck, both of which belonged to his mother. No matter how hungry he gets, he refuses to sell them.
Personality:
Jin is not a shy man by any stretch of the imagination. He is bold, outgoing, and usually very cheerful and friendly. While he doesn't try to be 'sophisticated', he also manages not to be rude, striking this perfect balance that grants him a sort of charming down-to-earthness. He considers himself a simple man with simple ideals. He is not above using his charms to get a few extra coins from a pretty girl on the street, but he does respect women, having seen the things his mother did to provide for him, and promising never to use women in such a manner himself.
He is a pickpocket, and a very good one at that, but he has high standards for himself and others. He abhors lying, and though he is slow to anger, feeling that someone has lied to him or betrayed him is the quickest way to see his wrath. He will not steal form those he feels need it worse than he does, and he will not harm others except in self defense or to protect someone he has become close to. Jin was raised that promises are sacred, and should never be broken. Though they should not be lightly made, they should be kept to the best of one's ability.
Although he thrives in areas with lots of people, enjoying the general hum of life around him, he is still quite fond of quiet nature, and feels a sort of bond with nature, mostly due to his Seishi abilities. He is just as comfortable in a woodland clearing on a moonlit night as he is in the nicest inn in town, not that he usually ever gets to stay in the nicest inn in town. Another skill honed after discovering his Seishi ability is the fact that Jin has become a very good judge of character, as animals tend to be. He can generally tell, after just a few moments with someone, if they are 'good' or 'bad', and if they can be trusted.
He is usually a fairly carefree sort, despite the many hardships his life has seen. He's quick to laugh, and quick to try and cheer others up if he realizes they feel down about something. He likes to help others, if he thinks they truly need his help, and is quite compassionate under it all, and willing to give others a second-and sometimes third-chance if he thinks it's warranted.. This is part of the reason that, when he is angry, it is such a startling difference. Should he become angry, the almost ever-present smile is gone, his eyes grow cold, and his warm, friendly tone becomes flat and rather polite. He is the quite sort of angry that sends chills down one's back.
History: Jin, like his mother, was born and raised on the streets. She originated in Konan, but traveled all around, singing and dancing for money when possible, selling herself when she had to, and stealing when she had no other choice. Jin was the product of a night spent in the company of a Sailo noble in exchange for a hot bath and a warm meal. She had already crossed the boarder into Kutou before she'd even realized she was with child. Despite the unplanned nature of the pregnancy, she was a loving mother, though she did her best to make sure he grew up street-wise, and able to survive in the lifestyle they had to lead. His mother claims not to remember her own last name, and to not know the last name of Jin's father, so Jin has grown up without a last name. In a pinch, he will use his Seishi name, Torima, as a sort of last name, though he prefers to just be called Jin.
Jin was a skilled pickpocket by the time he was seven, and people tended not to suspect the child roaming though the crowd while his mother sang and danced for their amusement. It was around this time that his mother realized he had the same love of music that she did, and so she saved up what little money she could and bought him a flute. He took to it quickly, and would occasionally play while his mother sang and danced, which seemed to draw in more money for the pair.
When he was ten years old, his life took a sad turn when his mother was caught stealing form a nobleman in Konan and executed for her crimes. Jin, as a child, was spared, but left basically orphaned. He returned to Kutou, his 'homeland', and continued the lifestyle his mother had taught him. He provided for himself by playing his flute for money, and running errands in towns that he was passing through. He would steal when needed, but like his mother, tried to only do so when he had no other option.
Just two short years after his mother's death, when he was twelve years old, Jin discovered he was the Seriyuu Seishi Torima. He was playing his flute for money in the town square when a few larger men decided to bully him out of his small amount of money. He snatched up his coins and ran, and the men gave chase. They cornered him in an alleyway, and were prepared to beat up or even kill the young boy. In a moment of desperation, he wished he could simply grow wings and fly away. The symbol 'Rooftop' began to glow on his lower back, and he shifted into a hawk and took off, flying to safety. He landed in a clearing a few moments later and returned to his human form, surprised to see he still had the coins he'd been holding.
After that, he practiced his abilities, and learned that he had the ability to shift into most any animal he could think of. He found that the transformation was painful, but with practice he began to become used to the pain. He also learned that he could now communicate with animals. They provided him with companionship when he wasn't around people, and could also help him track potential marks when pickpocketing. He would also use little, mostly ignored creatures, like rats and birds, to scout an area if he'd never been there before.
Unlike many Seishi, he did not actively seek out Seishi or the Miko. He figured that he would encounter them when the time was right, and there was no sense in rushing things. Besides, as a wanderer, actively seeking them wouldn't have changed his lifestyle any, and would have only drawn unwanted attention from him asking too many questions.
As a matter of principle, he refuses to return to Konan, because that was where his mother died. For this reason, he mostly roams Kutou, Hokkan, and the smaller countries and territories that fill in the map. He does make the occasional trip into Sailo, but tries not to do so often as he does not want to run into his father and potentially cause an altercation or some other difficulties. Once he got old enough and strong enough, he began to work as a hired hand whenever possible, but that work tends to be inconsistent at best.
