Name: Ayumu (Seishi name) Hayate Katsurou (real name)
Age: 25
Gender: Male
Position: Seishi, crown prince of the Hokkan Empire
Symbol and location: Hayate has the symbol 'Encampment' located on the center of his forehead.
Power:
Waking Dreams: Hayate's main ability is to entrap others in waking dream-like states. These dreams can either be pleasant, or they can be nightmares. It is very difficult to break out of this state, but it is possible. The easiest way is for him to release you, but it is also possible if his concentration is broken or if someone else manages to snap you out of it. If the person in the trance can figure out it's a trance, then they can possibly break free, but everything in these dreams is so realistic that it is hard to tell it from reality. He tends to draw on a person's inner fears and desires for this ability.
Dream Manipulation: Unlike his waking dream ability, this calls for the intended target to be asleep. He can view the dreams they are having, either seen or unseen to the dreamer, and manipulate them at will into either good or bad dreams. When good, these dreams are quite restful and pleasant, but when bad, they tend to lead to fitful sleep. No harm that comes to the dreamer during the dream is reflected in the waking world, but if it's a bad dream, they may wake with a headache. The person cannot wake themselves from this dream, but can be woken by others...though it is next to impossible for them to communicate that they need to be woken, if it's a bad dream. The only other way out is to wake naturally. This ability uses less energy than his Waking Dream ability
Weapon:
Katana: Hayate trained with the Imperial Guard from a young age. At first it was out of a desire to be able to protect his mother (and later his sister), but once he learned he was a Seishi, he realized it would be a handy skill to have to protect the Genbu no Miko as well. He's a skilled swordsman. He can handle just about any time of sword, given a moment to adjust to it, but he has a fondness for the katana.
Martial Arts: Not a weapon, per say, but as part of his training with the Imperial Guard, he learned hand-to-hand combat, and excelled with it as well.
Yume Hana Powder: There is a flower that grows in abundance on a small island near Nyosei Island called Yume Hana (Dream Flower) because when it's petals are dried and ground into powder, it serves as a powerful, fast acting sedative. Given Hayate's Seishi abilities, and the fact that it is easier for him to use them on those who are sleeping, he has become skilled in its use, and always carries an abundance of the powder with him. He has built up an immunity to it, and so it does not affect him the way it does others. His favorite means of administering the powder is either by simply blowing it into someone's face or by means of a little packet he throws that busts upon impact and is breathed in.
Birthplace: Hokkan Palace
Affiliation: Genbu, Hokkan Empire
Appearance: Image.
Hayate is tall, standing at 6'6”, and is strong from all of his training. His skin is lightly tan, more so than his mother or sister, but not as much as someone from a warmer nation. His black hair is long and straight, hanging to about his waist when loose, but usually pulled up into a high ponytail to keep it out of his way as he trains, though a few shorter strands tend to escape and frame his face. He has rather dark purple eyes that can show his emotion when he lets his guard down but that is rare, except around certain people.
When not training, Hayate dresses for the cold climate, wearing black fur lined boots that come to just below his knees, thick, tall, warm, socks, heavy black trousers, and warm, well made shirts and coats, usually some dark, rich color like sapphire blue or deep purple. When traveling, a warm black hooded cloak joins this outfit. When inside the palace, which is kept warm by many fires, he usually sheds his coat, and when in his own room, or only within the company of his few friends and family, he may even shed the boots.
When training, he usually wears loose comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, though his boots are still his preferred footwear. Despite the fact that his training attire is vastly different from his usual manner of dress, he has practiced fighting in both, and is equally skilled in fighting no matter how he is dressed.
Personality:
Hayate has a very complex personality, which makes it difficult for him to make friends. At first, most would call him arrogant, smug, stubborn and determined...and they would be right. He knows he is skilled with weapon and martial arts, and he knows he's what many would consider handsome. Perhaps his mother praised his attributes a little too often when he was growing up, but he does have a bit of an ego, and has a hard time with the concept of 'humble'. He knows he will some take take over the rule of the Empire from his mother, and as such, he has learned the finesse and charm a good ruler needs. He can compliment and charm with the best of them, and knows when these skills are called for.
He is not shallow, however, and has a fondness for intellectual aspects, such as poetry and storytelling. He is quite knowledgeable in the history of Hokkan, especially the tales of past Miko and Seishi. He quite enjoys music and dancing, though he rarely dances himself. He is also not completely self-centered, as many would initially think. In fact, he basically lives for his mother and little sister Yori, and wants nothing more in life than to see them both happy. This is a feeling he also extends to anyone he considers a friend.
He doesn't make friends easily, as he's aware that many who claim to want his friendship in truth only want to gain favor with the future Emperor. He is fiercely protective of those he does consider a friend though, and wold do absolutely anything for them. It is, perhaps, this knowledge that so few wish to actually get to know the real him that initially caused him, at a young age, to develop such a prickly personality.
History:
Hayate was born the heir to the Hokkan throne. His mother was the Empress, and though she refused to marry, as she did not want to loose her power as sole Ruler to a man, she did have a string of lovers. The ones who eventually fathered children were granted elevated status as nobles, but were not given titles or any real power. Hayate's father had been one of his mother's personal guards until she realized she was with child. Two years later she had a second son, Meian. Hayate was very close with his brother from very early on. When Meian was five, however his father snatched him and fled. Hayate's mother was so distraught, it was some time before she took a new lover, for fear that another child would be taken from her. When Hayate was ten years old, his father began to oversee his training, and even suggested he train with the Imperial Guard to hone his skills all around.
Around the same time he began his training, his mother gave birth to her third child, a small but lovely girl. From the moment he saw her, Hayate decided he would protect her, and would not lose her as he had his brother. Shortly after she was born, they realized the young princess was blind, and though healers were called in, nothing could be done for the child, and no explanation could be found. Hayate took to telling her stories almost from the time she was born, sometimes tales from history, and sometimes stories he would make up. He also told her of their brother often, so that, even though the princess has not met him, she loved him as much as she did Hayate.
When his sister, Yori, was four, and Hayate was fourteen, he realized that it would be difficult to explain some elements in the stories to her, as she had no frame of reference for colors or anything else. One night, after telling her a story, as he watched her sleeping, somehow, though he didn't know how at the time, he became aware that she was replaying the story he had told her in her mind, as her dreams, though there were no images to accompany them. He began to imagine the story himself, and somehow knew that she could see what he willed her to. Their mother entered, and found the symbol 'Encampment' glowing on her son's head.
Together he and his mother worked to understand his abilities, testing them on others, with permission, of course. Eventually they realized he could manipulate the dreams of others, and so he began to do this to help his sister learn as much as possible about the world around her, and also to help her more fully enjoy the stories he told.
It was a couple years after that when he learned he could induce a trance-like dream state for those still awake. Again, it was while telling his sister a story. He felt the familiar tingle of his powers, and decided to try to immerse her in that same dream state as when she was sleeping. With that, he was able to show her the stories as he told them, and she enjoyed it so much, he started doing this almost every time he told her a story, as there was little else that seemed to bring her such happiness.
Once he had come to fully master his Seishi abilities, his mother issued an edict to be spread throughout the empire that anyone with news leading to another Seishi or to the Genbu no Miko was to report to the palace. If the information proved fruitful, the Empress was willing to pay up to 5,000 gold pieces. She did this because she didn't wish for her son to leave the palace where he would not be well protected. Hayate never felt the need to inform his mother that he would indeed leave the palace when he got word of the Miko because whatever trouble summoned her, he didn't want it to come to the palace where it may harm those he cared for.
Important NPCs:
Yori Katsurou: Hayate's little sister. She's 15, and was born blind. She's rather lovely, even for her young age, and loves her brother dearly. He's very protective of her, and often uses his abilities to ensure she has good dreams, as those dreams are the only time she gets to 'see' anything. She's the child of a traveling musician that her mother became smitten with, and who now serves as court musician, having taught her to sing and dance. She is, thus far, the only person Hayate will dance with. She has her mother's pale green hair, and her father's chocolate brown eyes.
Sumiko Katsurou: Hayate's mother, the Empress of Hokkan. She is in her late forties, but still quite beautiful. She has long pale green hair and deep purple eyes, and is quite cheerful and quick to smile. She is a just and fair ruler, and loves her children more than anything else. She refuses to arrange marriages for either of them, as she doesn’t want to force them into anything she herself had never been willing to do, despite the fact that there have been offers for both. She is gentle and caring, and quite proud of her children and their many accomplishments. The loss of her younger son has affected her, and she often wonders if he's safe and happy, wherever he is. This is the main reason she is so protective of Hayate and Yori.
Cho Sairin: Hayate's father, and occasional sparring partner, despite the fact that he is in his early fifties, he's still strong. He loves Hayate's mother still, but accepted long ago that no one could hold her heart for long, and is glad that she allowed him to watch his son grow up. He's proud of Hayate as both a man and a Seishi, and hopes to see him happy in whatever he does.
Hiden: One of the Imperial Guard, and the closest thing to a real friend Hayate has. The two went through their training together, and are most often found training together. He is perhaps one of the few outside the prince's family who knows the 'real' Hayate. He has short brown hair and sapphire blue eyes, and is about six inches shorter than Hayate.
