Her eyes are a sparkling emerald green, and are quite wide and expressive. Despite her age, her face sill has a rounder, more youthful appearance which further conveys her gentle, innocent and trusting ways. She has lightly tanned skin from spending a good bit of her free time outside. Standing at about 5'4", she has a small build, but is slightly toned. She dresses like most girls her age, typically wearing jeans and T-shirts, but she will wear a skirt or dress if the need arises. Personality: Hotori is a very sweet individual. She is extremely trusting, and friendly, and sometimes isn’t the best judge of character. She is the sort to look at strangers as friends she has yet to meet, and believes everyone has some good in them, if one is only willing to look for it. She strives to make others happy, and in doing so, is able to find happiness herself. She is pretty sensitive ad emotional, but she tries not to let these emotions rule her. She is quite intelligent, having scored high marks in many of her classes throughout school, but due in large part to her generally trusting nature and sheltered childhood; she doesn’t always display the best common sense. This causes many people to think of her as being ditzy, or unable to take things seriously, but she often surprises people in that regard. She is able to tell when it is time to stop having fun and start being serious. She is also quite curious by nature, and part of the reason she is so open and friendly is because she loved to learn about others, their stories and their beliefs. She can sometimes be stubborn, but will usually ask for and accept help when she knows she needs it. Once she considers someone a real, close friend, she become quite protective and fretful over them, a trait which stems from losing her parents at such a young age.
History: Hotori was born the only child to a businessman and his high school sweetheart. Life was quite normal, and she grew up like any other child until fate took a tragic turn when she was five years old. Her parents dropped her off with a neighborhood friend to play while they ran a few errands in town. Unfortunately, on their way back from the errands; they were involved in a horrible car accident, and did not survive. Hotori was sent to live with her closest living relative, her maternal great-aunt, Midori Takenagi.
Midori never had any children of her own, and wasn’t quite sure how to go about raising one. Still, she was a kindhearted person and did her best. She was careful to see that Hotori was constantly surrounded by only the best sort of people, people whom Midori trusted, and knew Hotori could as well. Although it was a good idea, it kept Hotori from learning how to tell ‘good’ people from ‘bad’. Midori also made sure to buy the best for her young niece, wishing to spoil her like the daughter she’d never had. She would often take Hotori on expensive trips to exotic places on school breaks, and Hotori quickly developed a love for new cultures. She also made sure that her niece had everything she could possibly want, usually even before she asked for it. Despite this, Hotori never became spoiled, preferring to give her nice things to others if she saw it made them happy.
Very early into her high school career, she met Shouri Okamoto, and quickly befriended her. She could tell Shouri was not like most people who wanted to be her friends simply because she gave them things, and soon grew to consider the other her best friend. She realized on some level that she wasn't the best judge of character, and often looked to Shouri for help when making decisions. She always admired her friend's intelligence, but worried she would push herself too hard. Having never had a sister of her own, she grew to consider Shouri the closest thing she had to one.
As she grew older, Hotori tired of traveling, and would instead request that she be allowed to stay home from time to time. It was on one such occasion, while her aunt was away visiting a dear friend in England, that Hotori decided to go through some of the things in their attic. Her logic was that if they didn’t need it and hadn’t used it in years, it could be cleaned up and given to charity. During her cleaning and sorting spree, she discovered a box of old books that her aunt had apparently set up there ages ago. Hotori was going to set the box aside and look through it later, but she felt oddly drawn to one book in particular, The Universe of the Four Gods. She decided to take a 'reading break' and took the book down to the living room. She had barely read the first page when a red light emerged from the book, engulfing her and drawing her into the world of The Four Gods. Her aunt returned home from her trip just in time to see her pulled in, and read the next line of the book, which declared her niece the Suzaku no Miko.

Hotori crossed the attic carefully. It was quite treacherous if one wasn’t paying attention to what they were doing, and she had already broken two vases in her pursuit to clear out the clutter. She was pretty sure she’d gotten all the glass up, but begrudgingly gone downstairs to her room in order to retrieve her shoes, just in case. She returned to the corner she’d been working on clearing out, a large stack of boxes across from a mannequin in a ballet tutu, and sat down to look at the next box.
“Old clothes…” She mumbled as she picked through the box. It was nothing she could ever recall seeing her aunt wear, and even if she could, her aunt had said she wasn’t particularly attached to many things up there, so if Hotori wanted to get rid of them, she could. She stood and carried the box over near the staircase leading down from the attic, adding it to the growing stack of things to give away. She then returned to her work, wanting to get as much done as possible before stopping for lunch.
She tried to move the next box where she could look through it, and was surprised to see if was far heavier than most of the others. Setting it on the floor, she dropped down to sit beside it before tearing back the tape. She gave a small cough at the cloud of dust that drifted up when she pried the box flaps open. “Oh, it’s books…” She murmured, lifting the topmost book to turn it over in her hands. “Really old books…” She knew her aunt, as a writer, was also an avid reader, so she decided to set the box aside and as her about it when she called later that evening.
She was just about to reach for the next box when she felt compelled to look at the books a little closer. Her green eyes narrowed in thought as she lifted each book, looked at it a moment, and then discarded it until at last her fingers landed on one book that seemed older than the rest. It was brown in color, and as Hotori examined the outside, she noticed it had The Universe of the Four Gods written along the spine in what seemed to be Chinese. It sounded like some sort of fantasy novel, and so with a small smile, the teen sat back, pushing a tuft of her blue-green hair out of her face and opened the mysterious book.
She had barely read a paragraph when quite suddenly a bright red light seemed to fill the room. Hotori dropped the book and covered her eyes as a strange, indescribable sensation overcame her. It felt as though she was being pulled in some direction, but there was also a tingling that bordered on feeling as if she were floating. ‘What’s happening? What is that light? It was almost as if it was coming from the book, but that’s impossible…isn’t it?’ Her mind raced as she tried her best not to panic.
The sensation faded, and she felt herself sitting on the ground once more, although it didn’t fell like the hardwood floor of her aunt Midori’s attic. Slowly she uncovered her eyes, and was forced to blink repeatedly at the sudden onslaught of sunlight. It was only after her eyes adjusted that the young teen realized she was outside, at what appeared to be some sort of market. Pulling herself to her feet, she looked around before chewing her lip in though and mild panic. ‘Oh no…what’s happened to me?’
