appearance:
Nikoto is 6’3” with a lean, muscular build. He is very strong without being bulky, thanks in part to his Tengu nature. No matter which form he is in, he carries a small pouch on his belt that holds his transverse flute. In the book, he has another small pouch that holds the Shinzaho of Genbu - A silver cuff-style bracelet with beautiful dark green, black and white gemstones cut into the shape of tortoises.
Human form: In his huab form, Mikoto has long, dark purple hair that is down to his thighs when sorn loose, though he almost always has it tied up in a high ponytail or a braid to keep it out of his way. He has bright, clear medium blue eyes that seem to showcase his emotions well, though he can hide his emotions easily when the mood strikes him. He has lightly tanned skin that compliments both hair and eyes, and a natural expression that is a smirk. Smiles and laughter suit his facial features, though he is also able to look quite intensely serious. Book: He typically dresses in all black, practical and warm clothing. When he is traveling, he has a hooded, fur lined cloak that he wears, but he also has a full face mask that hides his identity, except for his piercing eyes. He wears gloves most of the time. HE carries a small pack with his supplies, and keeps a variety of weapons stashed upon his person. <modern: When not performing professionally, he tends to wear simple jeans and shirts. He also has a black leather trench coat that he loves to wear. When performing, he tends to wear more seductive outfits, such as leather pants, and skin tight shirts, or long sleeve, loose flowing shirts open over his bare chest. It's part of his seductive celebrity persona.
Tengu form: In this form, his long hair turns silver-white, and his eyes lighten slightly to an icier shade of blue. He has long silver wings - about 2 meters each. He dresses in black, and may still wear his hood, but he does not wear gloves as it would interfere with his claw attack.
In both forms, his eyes can glow golden when he uses his powers, especially his fire or water manipulation.

Transformation and Shapeshifting: <ikoto has the ability to not only transform from his human form to his tengu form, but he can also shapeshift into any other living creature. Everything from small birds or even insects to people is within his realm of possibility. He is able to change his voice if mimicking a person to match theirs, but it is harder to maintain the appearance of another person, so he tries to only use that when he has to.
Possession and Secutive Influence: Mikoto has the ability to possess humans, but he also has the ability to emit a seductive influence. In the book universe, he uses both when working as a ninja. In the modern world, he often uses the seductive influence during his performances to encourage the crowd to have the right mood. This can be used to seduce others into acts of intimacy, but more often, it is used to influence others to feel happy, comfortable or excited. Although he can influence others to feel darker emotions, he would rather not
Fire Manipulation: Mikoto has the ability to create and manipulate fire at will in any number of uses and effects. It uses less energy to manipulate existing fire than it does to create and then manipulate fire, and the more fire he manipulates, the more energy it uses In the book, he will sometimes use this power to melt snow so that he has water readily available to manipulate for various reasons.
Water Manipulation: Similar to his fire manipulation - though the two elements directly contrast one another - Mikoto is able to create and manipulate water. Creating water from nothing takes more energy, as do larger feats of manipulation.
Magical Martial Arts: As a Tengu, Mikoto is naturally gifted with martial arts, and he often uses one or more of his powers while performing martial arts. In the book, this makes him a better Ninja, while in the modern world, it gives him a more athletic dance style during his performances and videos.
Accelerated Healing: As a non-human creature, he has an accelerated healing factor that allows him to recover more quickly from injuries and illness or poison. The more serious the injury, the longer it will take for him to recover from it.
Superhuman Strength, Speed and Agility: Mikoto is able to move faster and more nimbly than normal humans, and he is a bit stronger as well. In the book, this helps him as a ninja, while in the modern world, it allows him to do more daring stunts during his performances and videos,
Claw Attack: One of the trais Mikoto inherited from his father’s clan was the ability to grow his fingernails into talons that can have any number of features, depending on his needs. He can hardon his talons into weapons that can cut through most any object or material. He can also cause them to have a sleeping or poisonous effect when piercing skin. In addition, he can actually shed his talons and shoot them as projectile weapons.

Singing and Music: Mikoto has a natural affinity for music, and it has always been something that brings him peace and joy. In the book, he often sings or performs with Yori, when in the Imperial Palace.He has a transve flute that he carries at all times, though he is skilled in many other instruments. In modern day, as a Pop Rock Idol, he is chiefly known for his singing, but he also plays piano, guitar, drums and violin. He also always has a transverse flute he likes to play.
Martial Arts: Perhaps it goes without saying, but he has taken quite naturally to several styles of martial arts. Although he can use them to defend himself and others, he tends to use them sparingly in the world of the Book, though they come in handy in missions as a ninja. In the modern world, he incorporates them into his dance moves.
Gardening: Quite surprising to most is his love for plants and gardening. He has a gift with plants, and finds tending them quite relaxing. In the book, he has been granted a portion of the imperial gardens where he can grow whatever he likes - usually ornamental flowers for Tori and Sumiko and herbs to use for healing remedies for the soldiers and guards. In the modern world, he has a lovely rooftop garden that has everything from shade trees and lush grass to plants and flowers of all kinds. He even has a nice little koi pond with a gazebo for picnics.
Cooking: One of the things that surprises people the most about Mikoto is that he is a very skilled chef. He loves to cook, and is quite good at most everything he tries to make. He is less skilled at baking, but even then he can usually make something tasty. In the book, he is even able to take basic ingredients and turn it into something people did not expect was cooked over a campfire.
weapons: Book: Mikoto carries many weapons - though he doesn’t need to - including a katana, several throwing knives and darts, and a few shorter knives. In the modern world, Mikoto is unarmed, trusting his powers to keep himself and those he cares for safe.
strengths:
Mikoto has a keen intellect, in addition to his numerous supernatural abilities, that makes him more aware of his surroundings and current situation than people tend to assume. He reads a lot and has a mind that soaks up knowledge like a sponge. He is always eager to learn new things, and quick to analyze the situation and think of at least one potential solution.His intellect is rivaled only by his kind, compassionate heart. He has a soft spot for those who need his help, and he will go above and beyond to see that they get what they need.Some would consider this selflessness a weakness, but he views it as a strength because it has given him opportunities he wouldn’t have otherwise had. In the book, this means he has an extensive network of contacts and informants - all friends he made by showing simple kindness - that he can use when he has a tak to complete. In the modern world, this has not only allowed him to do a great number of acts for charities, and earned him the respect of many, but it also allowed him a second chance with Izanami. In addition, he has a strong financial backing - the imperial family’s favor, in the book, and his own hard work and success in the modern world - which allows him many opportunities others would not have. Finally, he is a skilled actor. In the book, this means he can seamlessly blend in or play parts to get the information he requires. In the modern world, this is used more literally when making his videos and differentiating between his “Public” and “private” personas.
weaknesses: There are the usual weaknesses of forest spirits - namely, wards - as well as a few limitations and disadvantages to many of his powers. Although he can shapeshift into any form - including humans - he has an easier time holding shapes that are closer in size to himself. A bear would be easier for him - and he could hold it longer - than a hummingbird would be. Likewise, though he can possess others, the person is able to fight him off if their will is strong enough, and with his power to influence others, it is limited by the person’s will, personality and how many people he is trying to affect. He could not influence a happy person into being so depressed that they become suicidal, and he could not make a large group of people feel a very strong emotion. For this reason, when he uses that ability at his concerts in the modern world, he simply aims to send a boost of positive, happy energy through the crowd - he would be unable to do much more to that many people. Both his fire and water manipulation depend on the amount of energy he can use at the time. The larger the fear, the more energy it requires, and if he tries to do too much at once, he could quite literally pass out and fall from the sky. His Claw attack has one major disadvantage - he can only use it ten times before he literally runs out of ammo. It will take him up to a week to regrow all ten talons, though in theory he could use them one or two at a time as they came back, if he needed to. His compassion, in a way, can also count as a weakness. Although he is a smart man, it is possible that someone is a better actor than he thinks, and that person could prove able to manipulate his generosity for a time, but beware - once the manipulation is discovered, his wrath will be earned.
personality:
At his core, Mikoto is a gentle, friendly and easygoing person. He loves meeting new people and helping those who need it. He has a passion for music, gardening, food and knowledge, and he will pursue those interests whenever time allows. He has a fierce protective streak that means he will always step in if someone is being mistreated in some way, whether or not he knows them personally. Although he does have a playful, flirty side, he has never considered his normal baseline personality very alluring or seductive. In fact, in the book, he is just a little uncomfortable with romantic notions, primarily because his lifestyle never really allowed for him to indulge in them very often. Thoughthe modern version of Mikoto also doesn’t consider himself seductive at hear, he does tend to play up the sex symbol idea as his stage persona. This means he knows how to dress, talk, and move to get the attention of the audience, and many of his songs tend to go for romantic, intimate or flirty feelings. Ironically, he writes songs on a wide number of topics, but the ones that don’t fit his “look” are usually sold for royalties to other big musical acts, under the pseudonym Kyo Watanabe. He doesn't care if he gets proper credit for the songs, as long as the music can be shared with the world, He uses most of the money he warns from song royalties to invest in up and coming businesses, bands and charities. There is one aspect of his personality that he is less proud of, overall. He has inherited a nasty, violent temper from his father who was a Kotengu. He is slow to make anger - a trait not shared with his father - but once it happens, it is explosive. He has never harmed an innocent person during a fit of rage, but he has killed before (see history) during one of these angry outbursts. He feels deeply ashamed of this temper and does everything he can to keep it at bat - music, cooking and gardening help, as does a quiet walk and some time to think or - barring lal else - some good, destructive training.In modern day, he also practices toga and goes swimming to release some steam.

how.do.they.feel.about.the.minor.deities: As with the main gods, he knows they are powerful but otherwise he doens’ think about them much. He knows a minor deity or two, but his opinions of them are based on their personalities, not their power or influence.
how.do.they.feel.about.the.seishi.miko: Supportive, especially for the seven Genbu Seishi and their Miko. In the book, he is a close friend of Hatate’s and so he wants to help them succeed. In the modern world, he is Izanami’s boyfriend and he is very invested in her continued safety.
how.do.they.feel.about.normal.humans: Generally, friendly and approachable unless he is given a reason to feel otherwise.

important.NPCs:
Hikari: Book: a somewhat shy and quiet made at the Hokkan Imperial palace. She has a crush on Mikoto, but rarely does more than little kind gestures and words, and blushing at him if he happens to speak to her. Modern: the president of Mikoto's official fan club. Although she is largely harmless thus far, her behavior is a bit stalkerish, and Mikoto has had to politely refuse inappropriate gifts and requests for dates on more than one occasion. He would likely be less wary of her if not for the fact that he tries to keep his Tengu nature a secret from the general public, and her obsessive devotion could put that secret in jeopardy. Still, he mostly treats her with mild annoyance and usually tolerance.
Mizuki: Book: <izuki is a noblewoman in Hokkan. Her family is distantly related to Sumiko. She has had her eye on Mikoto for some time, wanting him as a conquest. Despite having a generally sweet and innocent appearance, she is actually a very manipulative woman who likes to have whatever man she sets her eyes on, but does not like to share him even after she has moved on. She has had an eye on Mikoto for some time - as she thought he was a more likely conquest than Hayate - but he has politely refused her advances thus far. Modern: A pop star that has built her entire career on being sweet, wholesome and innocent. She is really the exact opposite. She’s a very jealous woman who isn’t used to hearing the word no. She and Mikoto had a tour together a few years ago, and began dating during the tour. Eventually she began to behave very manipulative and abusive in private, having flares of rage that would make her throw things at Mikoto or do other things to try and hurt him. Later she would claim to be sorry and blame it on stress or some other topic. Mikoto eventually grew tired of the abusive situation and broke up with her, but she has not taken the breakup well. She refuses to accept that he is no longer hers, and will stop by his place or send gifts to try and win him back. He never told anyone about the darker side of the relationship, giving the public the excuse that he wasn’t really ready for a relationship aththe time. He didn’t think it was his place to ruin her reputation and image, not when his own was something far less wholesome, and it was unlikely people would believe him anyway.
Toshiyo: Book: Mikoto’s childhood best friend. The pair grew up together, but had a falling out over Nanako that led to her death. They have been enemies ever since.
Nanako: A tengu like Mikoto and Toshiyo. She was training to become a ninja like the other two were, and was a very close friend of theirs. The two young men fell in love with her, and eventually had an argument, deciding to fight to the death to see who earned the right to be her lover. During the fight, Nanako was upset, and tried to stop them from continuing the pointless battle. She was injured in the process and died, but before she did, she secretly passed the Shinzaho of Genbu on to him. She did not tell him what the treasured bracelet was, but simply asked him to protect it with his life and keep it safe until the time was right.
Shinako: The former Genbu no Miko. She was a sweet natured young woman of fifteen who loved her Seishi for the kindness they showed her. She had a special closeness to the Imperial family of Hokkan, and Sumiko’s great great aunt was one of her Seishi. She appears to Mikoto in dreams sometimes to talk to him, since he now holds the Shinzaho.

history: Book:
Mikoto was born to a village of Tengu in the mountains of Hokkan, His family, as well as two others in the village, were ninjas and they served as security for the village and also often did odd jobs and missions to bring income to the secluded village. His father was a Kotengu ninja, and his mother was one of the more powerful Daitengu - though she was part of the ruling family of the village. His parent’s marriage was a bit taboo, but everyone wanted the young couple to be happy. As he grew up, however, he realized that his parents were not as happy as they seemed. His father was very jealous and had a nasty temper, and his mother - although powerful - was far too timid to pose much of a match for her husband. The official story is that her husband caught her being unfaithful when their son was ten, and she committed suicide out of shame, but Mikoto had never really believed that story.

About that same time, he began training as a ninja, and quickly struck up a friendship with two other trainees his age - Toshiyo and Nanako. The three made fast, inseparable friends, and worked hard together to become the best defenders of their village they could possibly be. Tragedy struck when the group was fifteen. The two boys developed feelings for their female friend, and that soon turned into a rivalry. Although Mikoto was willing to simply approach Nanako with their feelings and let her choose, Toshiyo was too angered that Mikoto would not just step aside and let him have Nanako. He argued and fought with Mikoto until he finally angered the usually easygoing young man into an actual battle, deciding that the winner would get Nanako. Nanako showed up during the battle and tried to intervene, but she was struck down accidentally - though it is unclear which one of the boys dealt the killing blow. Toshiyo fled, fearing what the others in their village would say or do upon learning of the accident. That left Mikoto to try and comfort Nanako. She confessed in that moment that she had feelings for him and could only ever think of Toshiyo as a brother. She gave him her family heirloom - a cuff bracelet decorated in gems - asking him to keep it safe, and not to let anyone else know he had it. He promised to and held her as she died.

The scandal of this death - paired with the questionable circumstances surrounding his mother’s death - caused the village to decide to cast out Mikoto, his father, and Toshiyo. His former best friend vowed to get his revenge for - in his mind - causing the death of his girlfriend and the loss of the only home he’d ever known.

Mikoto and his father took up traveling, working as bodyguards and ninjas for hire. Their path eventually took them to the Imperial Palace where the Empress Sumiko was charmed by his father’s mysterious nature as both a Tengu and a ninja. The two became lovers for a time and Mikoto - then 17 - made fast friends with the Crown Prince, Hayate, who was the same age he was. He also became very fond of Yori, and soon began to practice music with her and help her whenever possible. It was not long before the two saw him as a sort of adoptive brother, and he found friendship, support and affection with the Imperial family the likes of which he had not known with his father. His father eventually became power-hungry, and set his sights on becoming the Emperor. He first tried to charm Sumiko into marrying him, but when she refused, stating that she did not wish to ever marry, and eventually turning angry and violent. He went to attack Sumiko, and Mikoto stepped in to defend her. A battle ensued, and for the second time in his life, Mikoto let his rage take over during the battle - he could not believe his father would hurt people who had been so loving and accepting of them - and he killed his father to save Sumiko. <ikoto was prepared to leave after the event, but Sumiko and her children begged him to stay. At that point, he pledged his services to the family, and has made a life at the palace, helping where he can and doing whatever tasks the family may require of him. Recently, he has been traveling Hokkan to try and find some of the Seishi to bring them back to the palace.

Modern:
<ikoto was born and raised in Hokkaido. His mother was timid and gentle - always very supportive of her son. His father was a less desirable parent, being somewhat violent and abusive. His father was often a jealous and angry person, and his mother was rumored to have run away from the family, but Mikoto believes that his loving and supportive mother would abandon him like that.

He began to volunteer in the community to get out of the house, and eventually took up cleaning and doing household chores for an elderly couple. He befriended them - due to the fact that they were also Tengu - and soon made friends with their granddaughter who was three years younger than him. He andIzanami were close for quite a long time, and he eventually developed feelings for her. He was always too scared to let her know how he felt between the worry that becoming closer to her could open her up to violence from his father, and also because he didn’t want it to seem that he was taking advantage of the younger girl. Around that time, she also began to distance herself from him, and the two grew apart.

When he was a teenager, he began to show great promise with music, and by the time he was twenty, he was given a record deal. He worked with his manager to craft a stage persona that was very unlike his real personality - he hoped it would be an added layer of protection for the secret that he was a Tengu. During the early days of his career, he ended up working with a pop idol named Mizuko, and eventually the two started dating. Mikukieventuallt proved that her angelic stage persona was as far from the truth of her personaliet as the sex symbol bad boy that he pretended to be. He allowed the violence and anger to occur for a while, fearing hurting her if he tried to defend himself - she was only a human, after all - but eventually he broke up with her. She has been somewhat stalking him since, wanting to either win him back or destroy his life and career - all while appearing outwardly innocent.

A little while ago, he was contacted by Izanami’s family who requested his help in getting her out of a toxic relationship, and still being fresh from his own bad encounter with love, he agreed. He approached her as an old friend who wanted to catch up, and also as someone who could help her with her career - he even wrote a few songs that they performed together - and eventually he helped her get away from her abusive boyfriend. Shortly after that, he finally decided to confess his feelings for her and asked her to be his girlfriend, though he promised that he would be patient and that having her friendship restored in his life was more important than anything else. He has completely cut off all contact with his father and believes that he had died, though he did not even look into the details to be sure.
