(OOC: posting order for this thread is to be established as people post. The first several posts will be just myself and Isamu, and other characters will be established in their proper places as their players post. PM me if you have questions.)
Sunlight filtered through a small, dusty window as Hootori Minamino slowly sorted through various boxes in her great aunt’s attic. Her aunt was in her seventies, and had lived an exciting, active lifestyle, which inevitably led to the accumulation of a lot of dusty boxes full of forgotten keepsakes. Midori had given her niece permission to clear out the attic of their home in order to create a more private space for the young woman to study and spend time with her friends.
It was very slow going. There was a lot more to sort through than Hotoir had expected, but she was slowly making progress. She had developed a system over the last few days of sorting the boxes into "things to keep", "things to donate", "things to throw away", and "things her aunt would have to look through for herself*. The result was that their large living room now looked like they were moving, but it wouldn’t take her long to deal with the stacks once the boxes were all out of the attic.
The young woman sat back with a sigh, wiping sweat from her forehead. She was glad her long, dark green hair was twisted up into a bun, or the attic would be too hot to stand for long. Her aunt had never seen the need to connect it to their central heat and air, before now, but now they had to clear the space before the repair men could come out. Still, she wasn’t the type to complain about the heat. She firmly believed that anything worth having was worth working hard for, and while she had not asked for the larger bedroom, she was starting to get very excited for it.
She used the small pair of scissors in her pocket to cut the tape on another box. More books, from the look of it. Books automatically went into the stack for her aunt to look through, although Hotori had been glancing through and taking out any that caught her eye to keep, if only long enough that she could read them before donating them. These looked to be photo albums, for the most part, and Hotori smiled. Her aunt had been hoping she would find this box, as it had several pictures of Hotori’s parents, and of Hotori when she was little. She paused, frowning, when she saw a book that didn’t look like an album. It was strange that her aunt would put a novel in with photos, as she was usually very particular about the way things were organized. She pulled the book out of the box and examined it. It was a red and white book titled "The Universe of the Four Gods", and had a golden accented engraving of a phoenix on the front of the leather bound book. It looked really old, but it instantly captured her attention as she recalled the stories her aunt had given her when she was very small that told of the distant lands ruled by four beast gods, and the adventures of the special girls that were chosen to summon them. Maybe this was the book of mythology that inspired those stories?
Biting her lip, Hotori decided that it was about lunch time anyway, so a little break wouldn’t hurt… and if she spent that break reading over this book, what was the harm? She’d already been very productive that morning, after all. That decided, she put the book back in the top of the box, and lifted the entire thing to take downstairs. Stopping in her aunt’s room just long enough to drop off the box of photos, she soon made her way into the kitchen with her new book, and set about making some ramen for lunch. In the process of getting herself some soda, she accidentally knocked over a glass, which shattered on the kitchen tile. Grumbling, she retrieved her shoes and began to clean up her mess, That done, she settled at the kitchen counter and flipped open the book to begin reading. Ever the multitasker, she was able to shovel ramen into her mouth as her eyes flew across the page, all without ever spilling a drop of broth on the old book.
She frowned. This book was…strange. There was no table of contents, or information on the author, or any of the usual things in the front of a book. There was just text, seemingly the start of the story. This book was apparently about the Suzaku no Miko, and her journey through the land of Konan to find her seven Seishi. Hotori froze when she saw the next sentence forming on the page before her eyes, and she felt a cold chill when her own name appeared on the page. She jumped to her feet, not caring that the barstool she had been sitting on toppled over backward. She dimly heard a key turn in the lock on their front door as a red light seemed to surround her, blocking all of her senses for a long, terrifying moment,
“Aunt Midori?!" She called out, frightened, but received no answer. She had this horrible floating-falling sensation for several seconds. When the light faded, she found herself seated in a forest clearing. It was a warm day, but not uncomfortable, and the sun was shining cheerfully. Looking around, she was glad she’d forgotten to take her shoes off after cleaning up the glass, as it wouldn’t be fun to walk around here barefoot.
Wherever “here” was, that is. She moved a hand to run her fingers through her hair before she remembered that it was still pulled up and protected from dust by an old bandana tied around her head. She looked down at her faded Dir en Grey shirt and jeans with a hole in one knee. Her cleaning clothes, as she called them, were dusty, but otherwise still mostly clean. She took quick stock of her pockets, and found her cell phone, a pair of earbuds, and the small scissors she'd been using to open boxes. She checked her phone, but wasn't really surprised to see it had no signal. Putting her things away, she took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She had to find help, which meant she had to find people.
Working on the theory that if she picked a direction and kept going straight, she would eventually come across a town or road, or something that could get her to civilization, she started walking. She couldn’t explain it, but something told her that she’d been pulled into the book. Either that, or she’d fallen asleep at the counter, though that wasn’t likely, No, as impossible as it sounded, it was most likely that a childhood dream had come true, and she was now one of those girls chosen to go on magical adventures in a far off land.
She also had a feeling, deep in her heart, that unlike her childhood fantasies, this had the potential to become a very real, very dangerous nightmare. This wasn’t just a story anymore, this was her reality now, and she felt more scared and alone than she ever had before.
And so she went for several hours, stopping only to look for some fruit or nuts she could eat. She only ate the ones she recognized, not wanting to risk accidentally poisoning herself this early into her new adventure. Still, despite the logic of her plan, she was beginning to have doubts as the sun started to set and she still seemed no closer to civilization. She was tired from cleaning this morning, and all of the walking this afternoon, and she desperately wanted a hot bath, a warm meal, and her nice soft bed. She wasn't likely to find any of that here, so with a heavy sigh, she sat down beneath one of the trees, soon curling up on her side amongst the thick roots. Her very last thought before slipping off to sleep was that she missed her stuffed bear, and she desperately hoped that this was all a dream and she would wake up safe at home in bed. Exhaustion ensured that she was a much heavier sleeper this time than normal, and none of the sounds around her in the forest seemed to disturb her.
~~
Midori Minamino entered her house with a suitcase in hand, and a big smile on her face. "Tori-chan! I’m home my dear, and-" She heard a thump in the kitchen, and her niece called out to her. Dropping her suitcase, she ran to the other room to see what was the matter. What she saw was her niece fading into a bright red light, and an unfamiliar book laying open on the counter. Shielding her eyes, she moved forward, trying to grab Hotori, but her hand only found empty air. Frowning, she looked around, then down at the book. Skimming the first few lines, she felt sudden dread. Surely this couldn’t be…?

Meian was a wandering soul, but as that saying goes, he will always find his way back home. Now that was an interesting term for someone like him, the home he lied was back at Hokkan, inside the walls of the great palace were his beloved mother Sumiko, the Empress, his elder brother Hayate, the Crown Prince and his sweet little sister Yori. And yet, he was a Seishi and so he always used his network to gain information in the event that his Miko ever appeared. He had been doing this for years though, and yet it had turned more into a habit than hope. Meian was a complex being, while he took his duties and his family as seriously as a military general would… his will was bound to the Fiend and that ensured he could not act freely and most persons despised him. For who could ever love a killer? And yet, there was one person he had cursed, his father.
It was because of him that he was now living such questionable life. He was sitting atop a tree watching as people trailed to and from a city in Konan when he suddenly felt as if something had happened. Something definitely felt different and he could sense his Seishi symbol, the ‘Well', on the right side of his neck begin to shine with a piercing red light, and yet he knew that it only ever activated when he needed to use his powers and his Miko had not yet appeared.
His Miko…
He heard a gentle screech and knew it was his hawk Aka. He turned to look at her and the way she motioned for him to follow, he knew he had to. He ensured his face was hidden behind his cloak and then he jumped back on sae ground and rolled on his side before he took off at a fast run. His symbol was still feeling hot on his neck and he could still feel the light emanate from him. Could this be? After all these years she had finally come? He wondered what she would be like, would she be like his sweet sister Yori?
The last thing he wanted as a drama queen. He smirked, he would cross that bridge once he got there he supposed. Butt hat brought another question to mind. Why now? Life had improved her since new rulers looked after their respective kingdoms and peace ensued. So what darkness awaited them now? Perhaps it was because of the Fiend? He winced, anything connected to them made him feel guilty for his current situation. It's not like he chose to be an assassin but nothing would earn him redemption now. So all he could do really is make it right for his Miko and Seishi and even if he worked from the shadows he would keep them all safe. Even if it cost him his life. He had been prepared since he was a child to die up his life… for the Miko.
As he kept running he ensured not to leave any footprints or not to have anyone else follow him. Usually a Miko would arrive at their most vulnerable, the last thing he wanted was to lure scum in her direction. Aka age another screech and seemed to have stopped just above a tree on the outskirts. He ran to her as soon as he spotted her.
He looked at her in shock for a moment, he could tell she had been walking for a very long time, on top of that she did not look dehydrated a she studied her. He could see the remains of something she must have touched with her fingertips. Had she tried to forage not to starve? Aka landed on his shoulder and he smirked, “Aka, this Miko is something else.” He looked at her sleeping face, for someone who had given a try to her survival skills and tried to survive by her own means, she sure was a bit unconcerned when it came to sleeping in the middle of nowhere with no protection. He gently moved a lock of hair behind her ear, “For a moment there I thought it was Yori.” He looked around to make sure no one else was near and he slowly picked her up. He had plenty of practice for he had done with his beloved sister Yori. His Miko was as light as a feather, he smirked, “There is certainly something… fascinating about you, young Miko.” He then closed his eyes for a moment just to make sure there were no injuries in her body as one of his skills was to heal if needed. But she was fine. Her loges were probably tired from all that walking but he would take her to an Inn. He knew one of her Seishi were there. Haru, his family owned the inn and he would certainly never reveal that he had frequented that inn and never paid for water food he could steal. It was good food though, and sometimes he would lead money or flowers in thanks for the food he would steal without them knowing.
He smirked, “I wonder what your world is like, what family and friends you had. What way of life you led before being brought here to fulfil a mission that should not be imposed on so young a person.” He gasped for a moment, he usually was not very talkative unless he was with his family. He stopped for a moment, well technically the Miko was also his family. And this girl, he had a feeling she would steal the hearts of everyone in Konan if she were anything like Yori.
As soon as they got close enough to the city though, he sensed something and he looked ahead of him. He saw a man, older than him, with long dark hair. He closed his eyes for a moment, did he sense his power? Was he another Seishi? Maybe he would have to do a little experiment. He felt the lady slowly stir away and he whispered, “My Miko, please do not be afraid, I brought you to the city to keep you safe. You need to go to that man over there. He will help you gather the rest of the people who will be at your disposal.” He then set her down gently and knelt on one knee, “However, fear not. I will ALWAYS be watching over you. For I am Meian Katruoro, Kurai or the ‘Well’. One of your Seishi and our main priority is your safety and happiness.” He then handed her a wrapped up candy, as he always did with Yori while he blushed. These kids always melted his heart. He allowed her to look at his face hidden by his cloak, for she had to know he was sincere in his words and actions. He then bowed his head and no sooner had his Miko looked back at the man she had to go to, he had disappeared without a trace.
He knew what would happen next and he did not wish to make his Miko feel guilty or anything by watching him as he was now. Struggling with breathing and with a hand on his chest and next to his heart he tried to focus on his Miko just in case he needs to help her. It was his curse, whenever he helped the enemy of the Fiend, he would be punished with great pain. But he was not a bad man, and helping others was something he could not stop himself from doing.

NPC: Ahriman click here to see his appearance
It was mid-day and the euphoria of the festivities filled the air, there were children running around with dragon kites, their parents smiling and walking beside them, people dancing and singing with a cheery mood, others would indulge their seances with delightful warm food or exotic deserts and some more charmed by the arts would assist the show of the traveling troupes who made the best of such occasion and the streets were full of those who lived in the area and many more of those who travelled for the sole purpose of enjoying this feast. It could be said that only joy and excitement could be felt all around them. It was a beautiful day, the birds sang whenever they suspected no one was looking at them and the sky was clear and blue. The sunlight shone bright and warm and everyone seemed to enjoy such shelter, like a blanket that stops any coldness from touching your skin. However, there was one person who could no longer feel such warmth, but only the cold. A young knight, although already a veteran of war and many other unhappy situations in life stood by an oasis, the only silent place away form the crowds, the singing and the laughter. It’s not like he did not appreciate others being happy, actually he ensured to feed such feeling to whoever he protected, he was, after all, a well-known bodyguard. However, his being could no longer acknowledge those feelings and instead all that pleased him was protecting others and ensuring they reached their destinations safely and had a pleasant journey.
That at times made him push himself to the limit for the sake of his protégées. However, he learned that the safety of the customer was far more important than his own, so long as he ensured the person survived then he could concentrate on surviving as well. For someone who had suffered much at the hands of others he was very compassionate and selfless. This made him an effective bodyguard and a nightmare to whoever posed a threat to his charge. But it also left his own persona unattended, which meant, he no longer took a moment to search within himself and learn what he was feeling at said moments. It was as if his past ensured he could no longer feel his senses…just the cold. But he still had his willpower and a goal in mind and so long as he held true to it he would be able to keep on living with his aims at hand’s grasp. He looked at his own reflection, he had arrived to this town to finish a job accompanying a young man and his daughter and protecting them on the way, he knew they were a humble family and so did not request any payment, however, they still insisted that he kept a strange and small bracelet, it was black and looked like the rosary used by the monks in the mountains, it was said to protect him and bring him good fortune. He smirked coldly as he ran a finger on it and then turned. It was time to move on and find more jobs or simply travel about for a while, he had enough money to go about and rest from the burdens of being a bodyguard for a time.
Besides, he did not want anyone in the castle to learn of his whereabouts, which was why he constantly moved, he did not wish to be swayed into retaking his position as a General. He had his reasons to walk away that day. And he seldom regretted anything he did, with the exception of his impotence that fateful day when everything he held dear was taken away form him and he could not save anyone. He could scarcely believe he himself had survived, could it be something or someone protected him? Or maybe the men could not be bothered to deal with him…
Who knew.
He shrugged and then taking a deep breath his amber-brown eyes looked ahead as he turned his attention to the direction of the festivity. He needed to buy some food supplies so he had to ensure to be quick, he disliked big crowds, it was the best place for anyone to be completely vulnerable to an attack. Just as he began to walk in the direction of the lights, noise and fireworks, he felt a dark presence and he quickly turned toward a shade hidden behind a tree and automatically placed his hand on the hilt of his sword. “You have been hiding long enough, show yourself!” A dark smirk followed, yet the shadow did not move. Nonetheless, Isamu knew already who this person was. He recognised the dark and foul voice, the stench of a twisted being and the maleficent aura. He scowled, he knew the man enjoyed making him think back on the worst moments of his life being tortured in such decadent and inhuman ways by this man’s greedy need to show superiority and at the same time force information from one of his counterparts, a general of Konan. Ahriman did not believe in peace where all the four kingdoms were simply being neutral, for now. No, he believed solely that the only way to go was for Kutou to conquer the four lands, and then bring up his own power. Control it all. The treacherous man finally spoke, “You seemed so… thoughtful I did not wish to interrupt…”
He finally emerged from his hideout slowly, and walked with the same cynicism and dignity as the day Isamu was captured. He loathed the man for he was fully aware of his own charms to lure women to do as he wished and then thought that such charms worked on…everyone else. Well Isamu had news for him, they did not work on everyone and if he was not a man who would not simply draw a sword and kill whoever would upset him, he would have killed him on the spot. his hand did not move from the hilt though, cold yet gentle fingers caressed the pommel as the man stood a few meters from him and spoke again with more darkness and passion, if that was even possible. Long dark hair shook violently as he looked at Isamu in a mocking way, “You have no idea how glad I am to verify the rumours of you still being alive and well, I am aware of your current job…were you too scared of reclaiming your role as a General? Did you fear you might have to face me again?”
Isamu’s eyes shone with anger, yet he ignored his words and decided not to give in, it was clear this man was looking for any reason to fight him. Did he want to kill him so bad? WAs torturing him the way he did not enough for him? He had broken Isamu physically and psychologically back then. True, now he was much stronger in every way, but deep inside he could be easily shattered like a porcelain doll. That was why he was weary of others, especially does of the like of Ahriman. The man smirked and walked around him for a moment, testing him, taunting him, trying to see just how much he could truly influence him. But the bodyguard hid his emotions, his anger and simply stood cold and on guard in case he had to defend himself. The man stopped right behind him, and turned his back on him, “I came here for… you probably can guess now… Either you come voluntarily with us to Kutou, or you will by force.”
It was Isamu’s turn to smirk, he crossed his arms across his chest and closed his eyes, “I will not come, you have wasted your time coming to find me, now heed my warning, leave now or else I can and WILL kill you.” His blood was boiling now, and he could feel the adrenaline rush ready to explode at any taunt or work that poisonous man could dare utter next. However, his laughter disturbed Isamu and he turned to meet his cold and ravenous eyes.
The dark man spoke coldly, “I will make you, I do not care whatever I have to do, you will come with me… In fact…” his eyes spotted a beautiful little girl playing around following a butterfly before her parents came looking for her and took her in their arms and the family left happily. Ahriman smiled, but it was not a honest and enjoyable smile, rather a dark and malevolent one. Isamu recognised that look and his heart was beginning to sink in defeat, was he truly going back there after all he suffered to escape? The man turned to look back at Isamu, “Either you come with me or… I will kill the first person that comes toward this oasis through that road… And if you save that person then I will kill the next, and I will continue again and again until you come… to Kutou.” Something in the way he spoke and what he concealed in his voice made Isamu’s skin shake but he did not show it, instead he gritted his teeth in anger, this man wouldn’t see reason, right? his fists closed in rage and a hand moved to the hilt of his sword making Ahriman’s eyes beam with anticipation and Isamu sneered, “You wouldn’t dare!”
The man smirked, “Want to bet?” He nodded to his men and they hid under the few bushes around and some great rocks and Isamu felt his pulse quicken and his eyes darkened regaining their coldness, he really wanted to die did he not? His hand gripped the hilt of his sword… It was then footsteps were heard and Ahriman signalled for three men to capture the person and kill him or her right here, right in front of Isamu to make their point…
But they did not know something about Isamu…
He would not let them…

Hotori slept heavily for a while. Eventually, she became aware that she was moving, and it felt as though… Was someone holding her? Her emerald green eyes opened slowly, and she stiffened slightly when she realized some strange man was carrying her.
“My Miko, please do not be afraid, I brought you to the city to keep you safe. You need to go to that man over there. He will help you gather the rest of the people who will be at your disposal. However, fear not. I will ALWAYS be watching over you. For I am Meian Katruoro, Kurai or the ‘Well’. One of your Seishi and our main priority is your safety and happiness.”
Hotori relaxed a bit when she heard his words. He sounded kind, and he'd helped her by bringing her to civilization. In addition to that, she could see a glowing symbol on his neck, and she could somehow sense that he genuinely wanted to protect her. She gave him a gentle trusting smile. "Meian-kun? My name is Minamino Hotori. It's so nice to see a friendly face." She realized quickly that he was planning to leave. "You're not staying? But…" she listened to his promise, and nodded with another small smile. "Be safe, Meian-kun, and I hope we meet again soon." She took the candy, and looked off in the distance at the man Meian indicated. "Are you sure he-?" Looking back, she saw he was already gone and she shook her head. "Be safe, Meian-kun. And thank you." Final words whispered like a prayer, she unwrapped the candy and popped it into her mouth, enjoying the sweet treat before she started heading for the oasis and the man she was told to find. She waited until she could see him more clearly before calling out to him, hoping he wouldn't mind her strange manner of dress. She noticed he was quite handsome, and she suddenly felt just a bit shy. "Um…excuse me… I…I need your help, sir…"

OOC: Brief Meian appearance included
IC:
"Meian-kun? My banner is Minamino Hotori. It's so nice to see a friendly face… You’re not staying? But… Be safe, Meian-kun, and I hope we meet again soon… Are you sure he-? Be safe, Meian-kun. And thank you.”
Unbeknownst to Hotori was right behind her, perched on the nearest tree. Albeit leaning her was part of a plan to reunite her with more of her Seishi, and mind you, Seishi that were not in the wanted books and there were several rewards for his head… He deemed she would be safer if she was not seem with the likes of him. That did not mean he would not do his duty and keep her safe. He smiled softly, she would be a good Miko. His hunch had been correct, she and Yori were so alike. He only hoped that warrior was the man he hoped he would be. Either way he always had his weapons at the ready. They would certainly meet again, it was a silent promise he made his Miko.
It was not easy being in Isamu’s shoes, having someone like Ahriman constantly on his tail could be overwhelming and rather… negative and obscure. It made his job a tenfold more difficult and dangerous and in many respects it could also come to taint his reputation if tragedies kept happening whenever he was involved. Which was why he would protect his customers with his very life if he had to…And right now he had no time to lose, he could not let anyone suffer because of him…
"Um…excuse me… I…I need your help, sir…"
Much to Isamu’s disappointment, coming across Ahriman implied he would either have to give up a freedom that took him sweat and blood to achieve or kill to protect those threatened by his malice. The man smirked and his long dark hair shook making those around him, even his own men, uncomfortable and he pulled the hod to cover his face as he pointed at a young woman who seemed oblivious to the fact that she was in trouble. Isamu clenched his fists and cursed under his breath and though instinctively he was going to try and save her, something deep inside him also called him to protect her, to protect this one person. What could this voice be? Was this the… she couldn’t be… He saw a flash of red light about her, momentarily and he knew or at leas the thought he understood the situation… Unfortunately, Ahriman also noticed Isamu’s stare and grinned, “So that is your Miko bodyguard? Even better…” He boringly nodded at his men to have fun with her before they killed her. One wished to beat her up before they did something that any person would dread to experience. And so they pinned her to the ground and one of them had a spear ready to hit her with.
They laughed darkly. One kicked her on the ribs to make her cry even more. Isamu’s anger was such that suddenly he growled and gritted his teeth. Now Ahriman had never actually believed Isamu could be a Seishi, but what he saw now filled him with bow awe and dread. The bodyguard’s body was filled with a red light that emanated from his forehead. Isamu was Kenzo, the ‘Willow’, and the symbol shone piercingly on his forehead as he ran as quickly as he could in the direction of his Miko and just before two men hit her with the pommel of their spears he quickly slid on top of her to protect her and took the beating on his back to ensure it would not hurt the Priestess. He winced as his back took the pain but he did not care. He was using the strength in his arms and knees to protect her from the pressure even. So long as he was protecting her, he did not care what happened to his persona, after all, it was his fault that someone innocent had bend dragged into all this.
Meian had been right... this man was one of Hotori's Seishi and by the looks of it, he was a strong warrior. His task here for now was over.
Ahriman groaned in annoyance, “Seriously? How pathetic you have become that you think of others over your own well-being?” He laughed darkly as Isamu took a second beating before he opened his eyes hiding as much pain as he could, for a brief moment his amber eyes met her emerald ones. But he quickly got up sensing the men got ready to stab him with their spears and in one swift movement his cloak shook an he disarmed all three of them with two quick moves with his blade. Ahriman clapped his hands in amusement, “Good, but this is not over yet…” Another of his men readied himself to stab the girl and Isamu took her hand and quickly helped her to her feet. He pulled her behind him and said, “Stay close to me…” He parried the blade with his own and then kicked him on the ribcage and while he gasped for air he hit him on the back of his head not to kill him but to disable him form attacking for a while.
He took several steps back with the Miko behind him to protect her before he leapt forth meeting the blades of three more men. He parried two blade and when the third aimed to stab behind him he quickly rolled on the ground and the man ended up injuring one of his own men. Angered by this the two remaining men charged and one aimed to cut his head off. He blocked the attack and bent to force his strength against the man making him fall on his knees, but the other man made use of this moment to hit his back with his sword hilt causing Isamu to momentarily collapse on his knees. He was annoyed, why did he lose concentration? Ir was probably because he had seen Ahriman approach the Priestess and he would not let him harm her. Instead though, the man picked a rock and smirked before tossing it almost right where the lady was standing and Isamu noticed, to his horror that she was standing on…no…this could not be…quicksand?
But then Ahriman decided it was his turn to have fun and drew a great hammer. Isamu sighed in exasperation and then jumped back when the man swung his hammer. He did not have time to fight him and he was probably trying to get enough time for his men to regroup, well, he could have smirked at that, they probably would be out for a couple of hours to say the least. Ahriman tried to corner him several times, tried to find a vulnerability he could exploit in order to take him back to Kutou as he so desired. But Isamu knew he had to protect the girl. With that thought in mind he ducked another straight attack to his head and once their metal clashed and their eyes met each other, Ahriman grinned and moved hand to caress Isamu’s hair, “surely… you could just come in peace and I will forget about your Miko…” Isamu gasped in shock and once recovered he moved away from that man’s hand in disgust and kicked at him so they were no longer that close, “You scum, go back to your wretched kingdom and leave me be once and for all…” his words were more of a silent sneer for only Ahriman to hear, the man then increased the pace of his attacks and both men were beginning to feel tired but Isamu knew he was wasting time. He had to save her as soon as possible!
He hit Ahriman with the sword pommel in the sternum and then kicked him on the groin before he finally kicked him into the oasis. He used his Seishi ice skills to freeze his lower body so that he would be unable to get up and he did the same to any other of his henchmen who tried to get up and attack his Miko. This would be too humiliating for him to handle, he presumed. However, as he quickly turned to run toward the quicksand and save the girl he felt a great pain on his back and he fell on one knee…
He could not fail now…
He quickly got up, looked around to ensure no one else was nearby, sensing around in case more men would try and attack when they were trying to survive the quicksand and as fast as possible he ran forth knowing it would not take long for the quicksand to begin moving at a faster pace. He had already been delayed long enough!

Hotori smiled. She wasn't sure why, but she believed Meian when he said he would watch out for her. It gave her a sense of peace to know she already had a friend in this strange land.
It seemed that would be the last moment of peace she would get for a while.
Several things all seemed to happen at once. Maybe she still wasn't awake enough to realize the full situation, or maybe she really was as oblivious as the meaner girls at her school had always accused her of being. Stupid was the word they used most often, or naive. Shouri, and her Aunt Midori, and even Hajime-kun always told her not to listen to them…but situations like this made her wonder if they were right. She realized too late that the brown haired man was not alone, and though she saw a brief red flash - just like she had seen with Meian -she also sensed a lot of tension that was not her own. She didn’t have time to react as three men appeared and seized her, knocking her to the ground. She felt a surge of fear, and also…anger? Anger that was not her own. How could that be? Before she could think much on the strange sensations, she gave a sharp cry as one man’s foot connected with her ribs. The man thought this was funny, and he pulled back to kick again, but she bit her lip, refusing to grant them another sound, though she grunted with each impact.
She could see darker intent in their eyes, and braced herself to withstand another beating when, quite suddenly, there was a man between them and her. It was the one Meian had sent her to find. There was a symbol on his forehead. Willow? It was like Meian’s, only in a different spot, and a different symbol. She recognized it from her childhood storybook. She stared up into the man’s amber eyes, her own deep green eyes scared but still trusting him instantly to protect her. She could tell he was in pain, but that he was not going to let it stop him from keeping her safe. It hurt her heart to know that people like this man and Meian would suffer because of her. Before she could speak, he moved away and resumed fighting the men. Moving an arm up around her tender ribs, she started trying to get up, but she was grateful when the man offered her his hand, pulling her behind him. He gave her a quick order to stay behind him, and she nodded, indicating she would obey.
She was light enough on her feet that she easily adapted as he moved back, and she instinctively stayed back to give him the room he needed to fight, while still making sure s0he stayed between her and their attackers.she even took the small pair of scissors from her pocket to attempt to defend herself if these men had more backup on the way, They were small, true, but very sharp, and although they were no match for swords or spears, she could cause someone enough pain that she might be able to slip away from them. It was a shame she didn’t have her archery things with her, as she was sure she could prove much more useful with her bow, although her practice arrows pobably weren’t sharp enough to do much damage to these men…
It was while she watched the fight and entertained thoughts of how she could try to prove helpful that she realized the warm sand was oozing over the tops of her sandals. Looking down, she realized with a start that this must be quicksand.She tried to pull her foot free, but that only made it sink a bit faster, so instead she slipped the scissors back into her pocket and did her best to remain perfectly still. She thought about calling out to the man who had been helping her, but she did not know his name yet, and she thought about calling out to Meian, but she wasn't sure he was still nearby. Besides, she didn’t want to draw attention to the fact that she was more helpless than ever now, and she didn’t want to distract the man as he fought.
Standing as still as she possibly could, to keep the quicksand from moving any faster,she watched as the man fought all four men, and then used some sort of ice power to make sure they stayed down. Her eyes lit up with relief and happiness as he started toward her, that instantly changed to concern when he dropped to one knee to catch his breath. He was hurt badly by the look of it, and it was all her fault. “I’m sorry. You’re hurt, because of me…If we can get to safety, I promise I’ll look after your wounds. It is the least I can do to make up for having to save me…”

Isamu had to stop himself halfway there to catch his breath and recover form the pain on his back. He examined the lady as she kept on singing down the quicksand. He knew he had to keep a clear mind and think on situations such as these. Panic would only make things worse. He kept on moving close to her and as he was about to loo around he realised he was beginning to sink as well. It seemed that the quicksand was rather extensive here. That darn man, he knew! This was his way to fool the both of them right? Well he was not a bodyguard for nothing, he had many tricks under his sleeves. He was determined to save that lady and ensure to keep her as far away form that man as possible. After all, it was kind of his fault that she ended up in this terrible situation right? He sighed in annoyance, he should have known he would come across his Nemesis sooner rather than later, that man seemed to never rest and always be looking for ways to get to him. He felt the force begin to eat at him and his legs were unable to move anymore. It was then he realised that he was actually within hand’s reach of the lady and he took her hand, he was unsure of the feeling he experienced when their hands met, it was almost as if something within him stirred and the light that had surrounded him faded. He eyed her, “do not move, worry not, I will get you out of here…”
It was then he took a deep breath and decided to ignore his injuries and be a proper bodyguard, he could not be falling on his knees every five minutes, what kind of a protector would she think he was then? He looked around and noticed there were some palm trees and some conifers nearby. That was good, he could use that to pull her out. The quicksand moved much quicker now, it was reaching their waist-length. He looked in his weapons and noticed there was that one dagger he would die a rope to the curved and enclosed pommel whenever he needed to climb trees or walls. It was worth a try, he only hoped it would not budge. But then, for some uncanny reason, he realised he still had not let go of her hand and he gently let go, noticing only then that all this while her eyes had been staring deeply at him.
“I’m sorry. You’re hurt, because of me…If we can get to safety, I promise I’ll look after your wounds. It is the least I can do to make up for having to save me…”
He was a bit shocked that she was the one asking for forgiveness when it had been his own fault. It did not seem fair that she should be blaming herself for this. He looked into her emerald eyes, “You were only involved because I would not comply with that man’s wishes, if there is someone who should be apologising… that would be me. I hope this experience has not been terrible for someone so innocent as yourself lady.” When he felt the quicksand move even more he decided to stop fooling around and to something before they were both dead for sure. “there is no need, I can and will get us both out and once safe I will look at your wounds.”
Without another word he quickly drew his dagger and then opened a bracelet that was part of his wrist protector and then puled a small rope, he kept taking out a much as he needed and finally tied the edge to the curved pommel of the dagger and with his remaining strength he threw the dagger at the nearest tree and it stuck hard. He pulled on the rope and was glad to see it would still hold the both of them. However, due to him moving they began to sink faster and by then only their arms and hears remained. He cursed under his breath and said, “Hold on tight to me, whatever happens do not let go…” He placed her arms around his neck as he turned his back on her and he took a deep breath and then began to pull them out of the quicksand with the rope. Using his arms to pull them out, one arm after the other, as if he were moving through a pole holding only by your arms.
He took deep breaths to not swallow sand since it was beginning to spill as they fought to move out. He kept on pulling despite feeling his arms complain at the effort for every time he pulled the quicksand would drag them back inside. But he concentrated on the task at hand and began to move slightly faster so that he could get a rhythm going that was quicker than the motion of the quicksand. Always trying to be faster than it. His back complained at the effort of pulling them out and the extra height it carried but he closed his eyes and kept pulling with his arms. He could feel their waists were already out, but their legs still had to be released. For a brief moment he felt as if the dagger would snap form the tree trunk and he slipped slightly but he concentrated once again and pulled on and on, sweat dripped form his forehead and he painted.
Once he realised that they were almost completely out of this situation with a light groan to make the last effort with his body, he pulled with both arms and they landed away from the quicksand. He closed his eyes for a brief moment and laid on his stomach without moving. They were safe now, no one would threaten them for the time being. He turned to look at the lady and was relieved to see she was safe as well. He sighed and closed his eyes feeling exhausted for a little while. He allowed himself the luxury of resting for a couple of minutes before he sat back. He pulled at the dagger and it came back at him, he caught it easily with two fingers and removed the rope. He put everything back in the respective places and then turned his attentions toward the lady. He shook all the sand he could and then said, “Are you hurt? Is there anything you would like me to look at my Miko?” He knelt beside her and offered her a hand to get up. Something stirred within him as he uttered his last words but he decided to ignore it for the time being.
He could sense someone was nearby but, he did not sense any threat so he decided to ignore him unless he represented any danger to the Miko.

Hotori watched the man slowly make his way toward her. He was risking the quicksand to save her, even though he was clearly in so much pain. She could sense… determination, from him, and a sense of responsibility. She wanted to cry, she felt so guilty that he suffered like this because of her, but she felt she needed to remain strong until they were safe once more. Unable to go much else, she carefully tucked her beloved locket into her shirt to protect it from the sand. It was the one trying she didn't think she could stand to lose He took her hand when he got close enough, and she instinctively squeezed it, a silent gesture to say she was still okay.
“Do not move, worry not, I will get you out of here…”
Just as she had believed Meian before, she believed this man now. She nodded once, speaking softly. “I trust you.”
“You were only involved because I would not comply with that man’s wishes, if there is someone who should be apologizing… that would be me. I hope this experience has not been terrible for someone so innocent as yourself lady. There is no need, I can and will get us both out and once safe I will look at your wounds.”
She was stunned. Not only did he blame himself for the actions of those evil me, but even now he was more concerned with her minor injuries than his own? He wouldn’t have gotten hurt if he hadn’t shielded her from their attacks. “I’m fine, really, just some bruises, but you…you’re really in pain, aren’t you? Somehow… I can tell…” She had a thought. It was really strange to be called a lady when she was just a normal girl. “Hotori. My name is Hotori.”
She watched in fascination as he fashioned something to pull them out of the sand, and held onto him with all of her might when instructed to do so. She regretted that she could not do more to help him, but she could sense his determination, and decided that if all she could do was hold on tight, then she would.
Once they were out, she sat next to him, trying to catch her breath. She could tell he was exhausted and in pain, and hse quickly pulled off the bandana she had tied over her hair that morning to keep the dust off of it. She refolded the simple black and red fabric so that the outside was clean, and then carefully used it to wipe the sweat from his brow, speaking softly as she did. “Thank you. I don’t even know your name, but you saved my life… How can I ever repay you?”
“Are you hurt? Is there anything you would like me to look at?”
Emerald green eyes widened. He was injured, but he was still more worried about her. She got to her feet, but shook her head. “No, my ribs are a little sore, but it’s not bad. I’ll be fine. But you…you’re very hurt, and tired. Here, let me help you. Maybe we can find somewhere safe for you to rest, and I can find you some help…”
~~
Haruyoshi was enjoying the festival with his little nieces and nephews. True, the children couldn't stray far from him, but they seemed to be having fun all the same. He was surprised his parents hadn’t wanted him to work the inn today, but he wouldn’t turn down the chance to relax.
That all changed when he suddenly felt a warm tingle on his left hand. Looking down, he saw his Sishi symbol was glowing, accompanied with the sensation that he needed to go help someone.Looking at the little children, he turned to a nearby adult. He recognized her as being his Sister’s husband’s sister. He asked her to take them back to the inn, and to tell his parents he had to take care of something. That done, he took off down the main road that led out of town and past an oasis. He had often thought about getting the supplies needed to build a wall around the oasis, because although it was beautiful, the quicksand there was very dangerous. It was often hard to keep the local children from playing there. He saw two people near the quicksand, and judging by their appearch, they had only just escaped itThere was a girl dressed very strangely, and a man who looked like he was a traveler of some sort. The girl was cradling her ribs with one arm, even as she seemed to fret over the man a bit, and although the man seemed to be trying to hide his pain, Haru could tell - even without his Seishi ability - that he was hurt. Sighing, he approached the pair of them.
“Hey! What happened here? Are you two hurt?”
Hotori looked up at the newcomer. She saw a brief flash of red, and could sense both concern and…annoyance? Was he angry that they’d gotten hurt? Although she sensed that she could trust this newcomer, she stepped closer to the man who had rescued her. “I’m sorry if we disturbed you somehow…We were attacked, and… and my friend is really hurt. I’m a little bruised, but that’s not important…”
Haru came to a stop before the pair, and looked at the girl. So this was his Miko? She was younger than his sisters, and looked as innocent as any of the children he’d just left behind. It made him want to comfort her and give her a safe place to rest. “Shhh, no need to look so worried. I’m a healer. They call me Haruyoshi…Haru for short. And unless I’m much mistaken, Suzaku sent me to help my Miko and a fellow Seishi. I’ve got a healing ability, so if you will both just sit still for a moment, I’ll get you patched up.”
Hotoris smiled. “It’s nice to meet you, Haru-kun. My name is Hotori.” He moved to heal Hotori first, but she protested. ”Can’t you look after him first? I’m okay, really…”
Haru smiled. She really was a sweet girl. “I will take care of him, Hotori-chan, but first I think he’d want me to make sure I look after you first.” So saying, he placed his left hand on her shoulder. He could sense bruises and small cuts, exhaustion and general soreness. It took almost no time, and almost no energy to heal her up fully, and he turned his attention to the man. “Now, for you, my friend. We can’t let Hototi-chan fuss over her hero any longer…” His tone was teasing and he saw Hotoir blush faintly.
Once both were healed, he pulled off his cloak and offered it to Hotori. “Here, put this on. We’ll get you some clothes that blend in a bit better once we get back. For now, if you’ll both come with me, I’ll take you to my family’s inn. A safe place, a good meal, and some rest will do you both a world of good.”
Hotori pulled the cloak on, making sure it covered her strange clothing, then smiled at the two men. “Thank you…both of you.” Unsure what else to do, she stayed close to the man who had saved her as they both followed Haru back toward town and the festival. Her eyes looked at the different stands, and it was clear she was curious, but she wasn’t willing to leave her two guardians to look at anything closer.

“I’m fine, really, just some bruises, but you…you’re really in pain, aren’t you? Somehow… I can tell…” She had a thought. It was really strange to be called a lady when she was just a normal girl. “Hotori. My name is Hotori.”
Rumours had it that, generally speaking, the ladies drawn to his world were gentle and helpless. Hotori was something else though. Not only was she strong-willed and difficult to bully despite the injuries she sustained, But she was also compassionate and selfless. Albeit smiling for a brief moment on that subject, he knew that he would have to keep a good eye out for his Miko. For that meant that she would be an easy target for men like his nemesis. He nearly sneered at the thought of that scum, and he always ran away, the audacity…
He watched her as she untied some sort of bandana that was decorating her hair and used that to remove for of the sweat in his brow. He blushed deeply, not only was she doing this out in the open in the middle of a festivity but also, it was something very intimate that anyone could mistaken for them being in a relationship. He knew that she came form a different world but, he was not sure how to tell her know that people could mistaken her act of kindness for something much more meaningful. He blushed even more and looked away for a moment rubbing the back of his head, “I… thank you. It would be a shame to ruin your beautiful bandana.”
“Thank you. I don’t even know your name, but you saved my life… How can I ever repay you?”
He shook his head for a moment, “There is nothing to thank, it is my date to protect the innocent from scum like them.” And then he realised that due to the incident he had forgotten to introduce himself just as she had. He ran a hand through the back of his head and then finally said with a tone that was softer than he would have liked, “Li Isamu, I am one of your Suzaku Seishi. In other words, your protection is my outmost priority.” He bowed deeply closing his eyes for moment despite the pain.
“No, my ribs are a little sore, but it’s not bad. I’ll be fine. But you…you’re very hurt, and tired. Here, let me help you. Maybe we can find somewhere safe for you to rest, and I can find you some help…”
Isamu was relieved to hear she was not too injured. He had intervened on time, unsure as to why he placed a hand on her cheek and caressed it gently with his thumb removing any remaining sand from her face. “I appreciate your concern, Hotori-sama, but it is my wish to ensure your safety first and foremost. After that, we can look at my injuries and I can explain the situation to you. You must have questions.” They all did, and to be fair, if he were in their situation so would he. His hand dropped to his side and he sensed someone else approaching.
He looked behind Hotori and moved in front of her to protect her, but he soon sensed something in him. Could he be one of the Seishi?
“Hey! What happened here? Are you two hurt?”
“I’m sorry if we disturbed you somehow…We were attacked, and… and my friend is really hurt. I’m a little bruised, but that’s not important…”
So he ‘was’ a Seishi. Isamu examined him for a moment before he stepped to the side accepting his words as proof. But if he was bluffing by the time he was meant to tend to their wounds, Isamu would show no mercy no matter who threatened his Miko. He nodded when he introduced himself and answered in kind, “Li Isamu.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Haru-kun. My name is Hotori. Can’t you look after him first? I’m okay, really…”
“I will take care of him, Hotori-chan, but first I think he’d want me to make sure I look after you first.”
Isamu blushed lightly when Horoti asked Haru to see to his injuries first and he was about to protect that the girl was much more important. But he was relieved to hear Haru was of the same mind and looked after her wounds. The moment he healed her he saw the Seishi symbol and light and knew as a confirmation that he was indeed his comrade at arms now. And both would protect her fiercely. He was so busy thinking about all of this that he did not realise how quickly Hotori was healed and he noticed Haru was moving toward him next.
“Now, for you, my friend. We can’t let Hototi-chan fuss over her hero any longer…”
His teasing words and how Hotori blushed made him blush in kind and he looked away for a moment as he allowed Haru to heal his injuries. He was a bit surprised though, he had called him ‘friend’. It was such a strange thing to him as he had never been called anyone’s friend. He had been a lone wolf for a very long time as well, after leaving the military and becoming a bodyguard he had not had proper interactions or links with other persons further than the necessary ones between a protector and his protégé. This was new to him and he was not sure how to react to any of this. “Thank you, Haru-san.”
He was not sure why Hotori had blushed though, and was he truly her hero? What a strange thing to think about as he heard their exchange as she put Haru’s cloak on. The last time he had been called a hero was when he had named a small child and yet this felt different. He was not sure what it could be though so he let it go for now.
“Here, put this on. We’ll get you some clothes that blend in a bit better once we get back. For now, if you’ll both come with me, I’ll take you to my family’s inn. A safe place, a good meal, and some rest will do you both a world of good.”
“Thank you…both of you.”
He looked at Hotori as she walked beside him and nodded to her words. He focused his attention on their surroundings as they followed Haru and hoped that this place would be close by as he dd not wish for anyone to attack his Miko again straight after the ordeal she had just experienced.

“I… Thank you. It would be a shame to ruin your beautiful bandana.”
Hotori couldn't help it - she giggled. "This? It's just an old rag I used to keep my hair from getting dusty while I was cleaning. It's really nothing special." She continued to smile. "At any rate, we're both so covered in sand, I doubt anything we were wearing can be saved."
“There is nothing to thank, it is my duty to protect the innocent from scum like them. Li Isamu, I am one of your Suzaku Seishi. In other words, your protection is my utmost priority.”
Hotori smiled warmly at him, feeling herself blush a bit as he smoothed sand off of her cheek. "Even if it is your duty, Isamu-kun, I'm thankful for your help. I'm just sorry I got in the way enough that you got hurt. I didn't see anyone else with you, or I would have tried to be more careful."
“I appreciate your concern, Hotori-sama, but it is my wish to ensure your safety first and foremost. After that, we can look at my injuries and I can explain the situation to you. You must have questions.”
Hotori blushes a bit more. "I'm okay, Isamu-kun, really…" she looked away, a bit embarrassed. "No one ever calls me something that formal. I'm just Hotori…Tori-chan, to my friends and my Aunt Midori." She considered what he said about her having questions. Did she? Probably not as many as most, thanks to the stories she’d read as a child, but she did wonder how close to the truth those stories were. “If it is okay, I’d like to think about my questions for a while, and ask them later. I need to think about what’s happened so far. I hope that’s not going to be annoying.”
Things seemed to progress more rapidly once Haru joined them. Soon, they were both healed and talking toward the inn. It took them through the more populated area of town, and Haru visibly relaxed. “Don’t worry… No one will try anything now. It's too populated here, and in a small town like this, everyone here would come to our aid, even if they don’t know what prompted the attack.”
Once they arrived at the inn, it was a quick matter to get Hotori settled in the room next to Haru’s own, and Isamu on her other side. Heru’s mother came up to Hotoir’s room to measure her for some clothes and bring her a meal before leading both of their new guests to the bathhouses to clean up. Meanwhile, Haru went out to pick up some things that the Miko may need, leaving them in her room for her to find.
By the time she next saw her Seishi, she was dressed in a long, black qipao made of fine silk, with designs of a red phoenix with gold accents around the hem of it. She was also given black shoes that complimented the dress, but were more comfortable and sturdy than they looked. The dress came down to her ankles, but had slits on either side to allow for movement, and although it had the traditional high neck, it was sleeveless to allow for the warm weather. She also now had a bag with some more practical traveling clothes, and after a brief, private conversation with Haru’s mother, a bow and quiver full of arrows for self defense.
Sitting at the small table in her room, she brushed out her long green hair and began to twist it up into twin buns, tying it off with red and black ribbon to match the dress. She absently wondered if Isamu would like her new dress, but then blushed. Why should he? They only just met, after all. Haru’s mother had also brought her some light perfume, and a little makeup set, but she debated putting that on as well. Would that be too much? She wasn’t dressing up for a date or anything, she just wanted to look nice since there was a festival in town…

Shouri filed out of her classroom with her classmates as the lecture concluded, a smile on her face. She was looking forward to going home and starting on finding a topic for the paper that her history professor had assigned. Chinese history was so interesting! She settled her bag on her shoulder again as she turned a corner. She had the rest of the day to herself, so she decided to visit the library to get some ideas before she went home. She had room in her bag for a few books, and she could probably hold a few more on the way home. Hajime would likely roll his eyes when she got home with so many books. She giggled as she crossed the courtyard to the library.
Her booted feet clacked on the tiled floor as she searched the aisles and aisles of books. She picked out a few books on the Han Dynasty, then put a few back before finding some on the Ming Dynasty. She noticed that the shelves went further back too. Her curiosity led her further and further into the books, and she found a large dark wooden door. It didn't have a lock on it, and there was a small window on it. It looked like there were more books in there. Looking around, she didn't see anyone around, and...for some reason, she really wanted to go in.
She perused these books too, and picked out a few before checking out at the counter with her collection, including one that was really old. The librarian blinked when he saw it, but he found the barcode on the back, and she was able to leave with her books to find her topic. She tucked some books in her bag, which left the older book for her to carry, which she was glad for, honestly. She didn't want anything to happen to it. "The Universe of the Four Gods..." she read as she sat on the train. Maybe it had some mythology in it she hadn't heard of. She couldn't wait to read it with the others.
Shouri held the strange book close to her as she moved among the crowds until she got to her apartment building. Hajime wasn't home yet, so she spread out and opened the most intriguing book. It was written in Chinese, like the title had been. "A golden haired warrior girl opened a book and entered the world in a blaze of red fire." She tilted her head and blinked. "Well, that's got my attention," she said with a laugh.
Her laugh faded as a red light began to engulf her. Looking around, she couldn't pinpoint where it was coming from. She looked down and saw it was the book!
The red light grew bighter until it was all there was.
What...the...hell?
Suddenly, within the light, a burning red character for "Star" appeared.
Was she dreaming? No, she was definitely awake. Her heart was pounding.
The burning symbol flew toward her face and disappeared. She grabbed her glasses instinctively.
~~~
The light dissapated, and she heard loud cracks and pops. And...just like the book had said, there was red fire everywhere...well, red sparkling fire...fireworks? A group of performers were dancing with red sparklers, and onlookers were holding matching small red stars. They all stopped mid-stepped when she appeared. Her heart was still pounding, but now harder as she realized they were all dressed as if they were in historical times, and from what had just happened, she thought this wasn't just for show. She let out a curse, and ran through a break in the stunned crowd. She thought she heard some of them talking about how strangely she was dressed.
Now that she was out of the crowd, she saw that there was a festival going on. Stalls and booths of food and activities. She needed a disguise or something? What was she supposed to do? Where was she? Why was she here?
Her instincts told her to keep running, but logically, she knew that was only a short-term solution.
"Halt!!"
The authoritative voice made her do just that, but she had no idea what to do next. She didn't turn toward the voice, but a man in what looked like a guard's uniform walked up to her. "What is your business here?"
"I..." she began to breathe heavily. "I don't know," she admitted.
That seemed to take the guard aback. "You don't know? Where did you come from? You're not from Konan or Kutou...I haven't seen clothing of that style from anywhere."
Konan...Kutou. Place names. Could she trust this guard? Okay, whatever brought me here...you can send me help any time now! she thought.
OOC: Brief inclusion of Meian
IC:
“This? It's just an old rag I used to keep my hair from getting dusty while I was cleaning. It's really nothing special… At any rate, we're both so covered in sand, I doubt anything we were wearing can be saved.”
Isamu still felt embarrassed by her words but if she was certain he had not damaged something that belonged to her then he would let it rest. Still he looked at her as they walked, she was a rather peculiar woman and he was not sure how to interpret that. It seemed like nothing would stop her from caring for her Seishi. She was gentle and appreciative, they had a good Miko but they had to keep her safe, they had to ensure she knew she could not just tell her name to any random person she met or mention her being the Miko, her life would be in danger constantly. He did not want her to go through such hardships.
"Even if it is your duty, Isamu-kun, I'm thankful for your help. I'm just sorry I got in the way enough that you got hurt. I didn't see anyone else with you, or I would have tried to be more careful.”
Hotori really is something else. Even though her life was in danger and she haws the most difficult position in the kingdom as she is the Miko, she still worried for the well-being of her Seishi. “Do not worry Hotori-sama, you had only just arrived and were worried and confused. Anyone would think of all these things and be a bit distracted to notice the danger. It was my fault you got attacked and for that I apologise.” If his enemy had not found him in the city and had not promised to attach the first person to walk past in order to force a confrontation, Hotori would have remained unharmed. He was glad he spared her much pain though.
"I'm okay, Isamu-kun, really… No one ever calls me something that formal. I'm just Hotori…Tori-chan, to my friends and my Aunt Midori… If it is okay, I’d like to think about my questions for a while, and ask them later. I need to think about what’s happened so far. I hope that’s not going to be annoying.”
Isamu rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment, he was used to being formal with everyone as he always kept people as far away as possible. Thus he was named the Ice Knight, although that was also because of his Seishi powers. Would he be able to address her as she requested? He swallowed for a moment before he said, “Very well, I shall do my best… Ho… Hotori…” To her words requesting time to think her questions through he nodded, “Of course, take as long as you need.” He was in no hurry and could wait for when she deemed it a good time to ask water was on her mind. Surely she was still overwhelmed by being here and what had happened earlier. It was perfectly understandable.
“Don’t worry… No one will try anything now. It's too populated here, and in a small town like this, everyone here would come to our aid, even if they don’t know what prompted the attack.”
Isamu turned to look at Haru for a moment before he nodded. Nevertheless, he was always on guard, especially after recently encountering his enemy. He could not help it, he was a bodyguard after all. But he did try to appear more… relaxed, if that could ever be possible.
Isamu was taken to his room and he was truly grateful for the hot path that was waiting for him. He cleaned himself as much as possible and relaxed in the hot bath before he got out and put on clean clothes under his armour. He ensured his weapons were in place and his long dark hair was tied back before he decided to ensure Hotori was comfortable and well looked after. Not that he did not trust Haru’s family but he was not used to hospitality of this kind, he was always looking behind his shoulder. The life of a bodyguard was not easy.
He cleared his throat and gently knocked on the door, “Hotori-s…” He nearly forgot about her request to address her more informally and caught himself just on time. It would take some getting used to. “I just wanted to ensure you are comfortable and well.” He waited for her to let him in and as she closed the door behind him he turned to look at her for a moment, “I hope you feel… more at… ease.” He blushed slightly as he looked at her but soon recovered. She was a lovely young woman and he wondered if she was aware of how charming she looked with that dress.
“That dress suits you.” Trying not to sound like a pervert he looked through the window and added, “Perhaps we could go to the festival food stalls later if you are hungry and try some of the food? It would be a shame fo you not to enjoy the festivities due to what happened earlier. I can come with you and keep you safe if you would like that.”
Meian knew that Haru would be busy tending to his guests and sorting things out and thought it was the best moment to drop a note requesting him to buy two dango and some coins for said purchase. He knew Hotori had been through a lot and he wanted to share a tiny bit of happiness with her later on, before she had to go to sleep. It was a festival after all and she had to try their local sweets. She looked like someone who enjoyed sweets. Hopefully she would not prove him wrong. He smirked as if he were being a naughty child by leaving the money and note and he went back into hiding.
Hotori had decided to skip the makeup for now, feeling silly for even considering it when she'd never been much for wearing it before. Instead, she settled to delicately cleaning the sand from her beloved locket, glad to see the pictures inside were safe. She was just fastening it around her neck and settling it on her chest when a knock came at her door.
“Hotori-s… I just wanted to ensure you are comfortable and well. I hope you feel… more at… ease.”
Hotori smiled.It was so sweet that Isamu had come to check on her, and it was cute that he’d nearly used the honorific again, but caught himself. She pulled the door open and smiled up at him, expression bright and cheerful. “Isamu-kun! Yes, I’m settled nicely. I feel much better now that I’ve had a good meal and I’m all clean.” She blushed just a tiny bit then. Was it inappropriate to mention that she’d had a bath, even indirectly like this? She really wasn’t sure what was and was not appropriate here. Instead, she stepped back and allowed him to enter, continuing as if she had not possibly said something embarrassing. “I’m so glad my locket is okay. It’s the one thing I couldn’t replace, if something happened to it…” She placed a hand gently over the locket for a moment, and suddenly wished she’d had a way to put a picture of Shouri and Hajime in there as well. She missed her best friend and her strange older brother as much as she missed her aunt. Realizing now wasn’t the time forsad thoughts, she smiled back up at Isamu.
“That dress suits you. Perhaps we could go to the festival food stalls later if you are hungry and try some of the food? It would be a shame for you not to enjoy the festivities due to what happened earlier. I can come with you and keep you safe if you would like that.”
Hotori blushed at the compliment. “It does? I… Well, I was worried it was a bit too fancy. It's not the sort of thing I wear back home, but I guess that’s the point, isn’t it?” At his offer, her eyes seemed to brighten even more. Oh, could we? Thank you, Isamu-kun!“ Unable to help herself, she moved forward and gave him a tight hug. Her expression was identical to a child who’d just been promised a special treat. “I love festivals. Aunt Midori says she’s too old for all the walking now, but I can usually get Shouri-chan to go with me. They’re always so much fun, and it's a great way to learn about a community, because you can try local foods and see the things they sell, and-” She blushed a bit darker, and covered her mouth. “I’m sorry, Isamu-kun. I just keep talking and talking. I just get so excited and I can’t seem to help it.” She cleared her throat and stepped back,folding her hands in front of her and trying her best to look more serious and grownup. “Yes, I would love to see the festival, if you are sure it would not be a burden for you.”
Haru had wanted to go see how Hotori was settling in, but he’d gotten busy when his father asked him to carry some packages to a guest’s room. He was just finishing this task when he felt something jingle in his pocket. He wasn’t in the habit of carrying money around the inn, so he checked his pocket. Finding a note and some coins, he rolled his eyes. Recognizing the handwriting on the note only confirmed his suspicions. “You know you could have just asked me to do it outright, Meian…” He grumbled. He’d met the other Seishi several years ago, and the younger man had been a bit of a nuisance ever since. Still, Haru was fond of him, and wasn't surprised that the gentle Miko had somehow already won over the most elusive of her Seishi.
Announcing to his family that he was heading out on another errand for Hotori, and to tell her and Isamu he would be back soon, if they should ask after him, he went out into the festival once more. Finding that Meian had included monet for more than two dango, he purchased the sweet treats and then stopped at a separate stall, picking up a cute little hand crafted charm of a Manekineko for the sweet young Miko. She could hang it on her bag for good luck. He knew they would all need luck, and besides, he was sure she would think it was adorable.
He had just carefully stored his purchases in his bag and was about to turn back when he heard a commotion nearby. Although he wasn’t usually the sort to get involved when it wasn’t his business, he felt drawn to this commotion in much the same way he had been drawn to Hotori and Isamu when they needed his help.
Making his way to the <middle of the growing crowd, he spotted a guard he didn’t recognize - which meant he wasn’t from their town, and had been brought in to help with the festival - talking to a woman he didn’t recognize, although she was dressed a lot like Hotori had been, when he first saw her. Could she be the Miko for some other group? He’s heard rumors that all four had been summoned this time. But… no, he felt some sort of connection to this girl that he couldn’t explain. Perhaps it was best to get her back to the inn as well, and then sort everything out. She looked scared and confused, but if she felt the same connection, maybe she would trust him enough to follow his lead.
Stepping forward, Haru placed a hand on the girl’s shoulder. “There you are, Imouto! I was starting to get worried about you.” He turned to the guard, tone turning apologetic. “My little sister. She loves the stories of the Suzaku no Miko, and sometimes plays pretend. She has a bit of a hard time telling pretend from reality, sometimes…” He gave the guard a significant look, as if to imply this sort of thing happened all the time for them. He then addressed the girl, his tone taking on a different significance, which he hoped the girl would pick up on. “Come along, honored Priestess, and I will be sure to answer all of your questions. My family’s inn is near and you will be among friends there…”
Shouri watched in silent horror as people began to gather around her and the guard and she struggled to make up a response. This crowd was bigger than the other one, and she would have the guard after her if she ran. Besides that...where would she run to? She had to think of something quick, or she would be arrested for...for what she didn't know, and she had a feeling she was in a time and place that didn't matter much. She grabbed the necklace that Hajime had given her and hoped something would come to her.
She almost screamed when a hand reached out and landed on her shoulder. Instead, she jumped and looked at the person. A tall man a few years older than Hajime was there. He had choppy dark blue hair and a kind face. He claimed she was his younger sister, and that she liked to pretend to be the miko sometimes. She was wearing a black t-shirt with a black leather jacket, a blue jean skirt, and jeans. Nothing about that said "miko." But he continued on and called her "honored priestess,'" and said he would be able to answer her questions and be among friends and his family's inn. His tone was also...oddly conspiratorial.
The guard was now waiting for her response. She didn't know if she could trust this man either, but...given that she was in a place where she knew literally no one, she would have to take a gamble, as much as she didn't want to. Clearing her throat, she said, "Sorry about all the confusion, everyone..."
The guard rolled his eyes, but smiled. He told them to stay out of trouble and to hae a safe night before he left and started to disperse the crowd.
Shouri then turned to the man who had stepped in for her. "Um...Onii-chan..." It felt really weird calling him Onii-chan, considering her own older brother must be worried sick about her now. "About those questions..."
“Isamu-kun! Yes, I’m settled nicely. I feel much better now that I’ve had a good meal and I’m all clean.”
Isamu noticed the slight touch of vermillion on her cheeks as she spoke and nearly found himself slugging as well but he managed to dismiss the thought as he nodded to her words, “I’m glad to hear you are much more comfortable now.” He had to admit he was surprised with how Hotori was handling everything, he did not expect his Miko to be so strong. He thought she would be scared, tired and anxious due to being in a world that wasn’t her own. Instead she was adapting, smiling and was incredibly positive. It was quite refreshing, he had to admit. Especially with the darkness that had taken hold of his life in recent years.
“I’m so glad my locket is okay. It’s the one thing I couldn’t replace, if something happened to it…”
Isamu looked down at Hotori, she was touching a piece of jewellery. Is that what she called a ‘locket’? He curiously eyed it a it was not something you would see in this world. He was glad she said that it had been unaffected by her journey to his world, otherwise getting it fixed might have been a difficult feat. It seemed to hold a powerful sentimental value. He was intrigued but he decide don’t to inquire after it, perhaps in the future they could talk about it.
Hotori had decided to skip the makeup for now, feeling silly for even considering it when she'd never been much for wearing it before. Instead, she settled to delicately cleaning the sand from her beloved locket, glad to see the pictures inside were safe. She was just fastening it around her neck and settling it on her chest when a knock came at her door.
“It does? I… Well, I was worried it was a bit too fancy. It's not the sort of thing I wear back home, but I guess that’s the point, isn’t it?”
He noticed the blush on her cheeks and something inside him found that appealing, especially since he was the reason her cheeks took a gentle pink done. He smiled softly if briefly and then he said, “If you like it and it is comfortable you should not worry about how fancy it looks.” He rubbed the back of his neck wondering how did their conversation go to dresses. But then again he had been the one to compliment her and it made him feel embarrassed due to the bold nature of his words. He added to measure her that she looked lovely, “I believe you look lovely and should not worry.”
“Oh, could we? Thank you, Isamu-kun!“
He noticed the excitement in her eyes at the opportunity to see the festival up close, taste the food and watch the people and he was glad he came up with the idea. He nodded and smiled briefly at how excited she looked, “Are you ready to go then? I’ll notify Haru's family so he knows we have not disappeared.”
“I love festivals. Aunt Midori says she’s too old for all the walking now, but I can usually get Shouri-chan to go with me. They’re always so much fun, and it's a great way to learn about a community, because you can try local foods and see the things they sell, and-I’m sorry, Isamu-kun. I just keep talking and talking. I just get so excited and I can’t seem to help it… Yes, I would love to see the festival, if you are sure it would not be a burden for you.”
Isamu looked confused for a moment, was she talking about her aunt back in her world? It all sounded interesting and it made him wish he could see all that. The moment she stopped talking and realised she had been talking for too long she felt embarrassed and apologised. As he noticed Haru’s family that they were going to the festival he turned to look at Hotori and gently took her hand saying, “Stay close to me.” Remembering he had not replied to her apology he added, “By the by, I’ll need be angry to hear you talk about the things you enjoy and are passionate about Hotori, so there is no need to apologise. I want to learn about the world you come from.” He then smirked and added, “I could never find you a burden, your rosy cheeks are rather endearing.” He did not even realise he was teasing her until it happened, and yet he did not regret saying so.
The first thing he did was take her to the food stalls, after all, he was certain she had not eaten anything since she arrived. He guided her to some octopus balls with brown cause and sour cream on top and ordered two. He carefully handed one to Hotori and smiled, “Try this, it is a delicacy, it is cooked octopus. And believe me, it is not slimy at all.” Many persons thought octopus did not taste nice but actually once cooked it was much more delicious. Albeit, some like raw seafood more than cooked. He was eating his food while ensuring they did not get separated and he guided her to watch a puppet show that was nearby, “These puppets are quite unique to this town, you won’t find any like this in this world or your own. The puppets have ceramic faces as it is easier to paint and decorate them.” He hoped she was enjoying the fertile so far.
